The American was voted the winner in a contest run by the National Army Museum to identify the country's most outstanding military opponent.
He was one of a shortlist of five leaders who topped a public poll and on Saturday was selected as the ultimate winner by an audience of around 70 guests at a special event at the museum, in Chelsea, west London.
In second place was Michael Collins, the Irish leader, ahead of Napoleon Bonaparte, Erwin Rommel and Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.
At the event, each contender had their case made by a historian giving a 40 minute presentation. The audience, who had paid to attend the day, then voted in a secret ballot after all five presentations had been made.
Dr Stephen Brumwell, who had championed Washington, said: "As British officers conceded, he was a worthy opponent."

Gotta point out that, unlike ol’ Boney, Washington was never prepared to invade the UK.
It is notable that Washington was the least willing foe they have ever faced. He was a loyal British subject who could no longer withstand the abuse of an arrogant government. It was with divine provenience and his faith in man to accept personal responsibility and rule his own destiny, that Washington led a rag-tag army against the most powerful military of the time and prevailed.

How about deception? Geurilla tactics? Infiltration? Subversive tactics?
Additionally, I would just like to point out that western civilization has not demonstrated anything close to military competence since about the 1940's. What we have shown is that this country is full to the brim of and populated by -idiots- except for Ronald Reagan.

Perhaps their goal is not to take it over. Perhaps their goal is to use the systems of the country to grow their own strength within the country while exploiting every design flaw and the stupidity of every citizen in such a way to cause the country to simply collapse upon itself?
When you have a prince of your nemesis country thinking of converting to your cult, then you do not even have a nemesis country any longer, they don't even exist.
The world will never forget the year that General Washington sent his air force to bomb the British into submission. The colonists started off with the air fields and radar stations but before longed they switched to terror bombing of London and other cities. But the plucky Brits held out and within a few years Washington was hiding in his bunker in Philadelphia, as his former victims closed in for the kill.

No blame, just the facts...
I DID do a search before posting, and I did another search today before notifying Kartographer. I found only 3 posts, and mine was the first. Did the one you find have a different title?
No blame, because it is an interesting article. But, I do wish that people will take the time to do a quick search before posting.
