Mitt Romney leads President Obama in the first Gallup national daily tracking poll.
Romney took 47 percent support from surveyed registered voters, while Obama took 45 in a poll conducted between April 11 and April 15. Romney's edge though is within the poll's three point margin of error.
Independents tipped the scale in favor of Romney, going for the former Massachusetts governor 45 percent to 39.

This is bad.
No Romney, no way.
Registered, not likely voters. Add 3-4 points to Romney’s total.
Err, so how would it be any better if Obama were leading? It's either going to be Romney or Obama that wins, so are you going to actively cheer for Obama to lead the polls instead?
This is bad.
No Romney, no way.

Seriously? No way Romney is worse than Obama. None. He isn’t my first choice, but I will easily vote for him in November. W. wasn’t the best we have had (prescription drug benefit, no child left behind, etc.) but he gave us Roberts and Alito...which just might save us from Obamacare.
Let’s get Romney in there, then hold his feet to the fire like we did with Bush when he nominated Harriet Myers...It’s our only chance at this point.
Romney’s edge though is within the poll’s three point margin of error.
++++++++
...and easily within the well known “ACORN Margin of Obama Victory Index”.
Bull$hit. This is just push-polling to try to seal the deal for Romney at the GOP convention.
As a Romney loather I do have to say this is fair news. I want Obama GONE baby, GONE. Hello freepers!
IMHO, anyway you cut it, Obama losing is good...very good. He’s intent on willfully taking the country down and four more years will do potentially irreprable harm.
We can and will survive Romney...can probably even hold his feet to his campaign pledges. Besides, Newt may still pull off a miracle and force a brokered convention.

And the alternative of another 4 years from p-resident Jarjar and First Lady Chewbacca doesn’t scare you?
This is bad.
No Romney, no way. . . . .

This is bad? Ok I could understand how Romney beating Michelle Bachman is bad, how beating Cain is bad, I can even understand how Romney beating Santorum or Gingrich is bad. Beating Obama is bad? Hillary beating Obama might not be wonderful but better than Obama.
I personally believe ANY repoublican, even RINOs beating Obama is not bad. There are always better possibilities, but get real, unless you want Obama to win, which I simply cannot understand how is anybody beating him bad?
Romney will lead the polls until he is safely nominated, and perhaps a bit beyond that. Then they will report the real poll numbers, or perhaps pad Obama’s lead a bit, in order to suppress turnout. Getting many of us to vote for Romney is hard enough. Show him losing, and even fewer will make the effort.
When further questioned, an additional 4% of the pubbies said they will definitely vote.
The real results of this poll are much worse for obama than the 2% that is indicated.
It is at least 6 and probably closer to 10%.
Gallup doesn't want to put down such a wide margin this early in the spring.
I don’t care who beats obumbler at this point. Any non muslim non commie non race baiter non redistributionist intent on reshaping america in his own warped image will do.
Like many here, I am not excited about Romney nor was he my choice. However I will back him fully to get rid of Obama. I think these numbers are very accurate for now. It is going to come down to about 10 states (unfortunately their is a built in bias in some states that we won’t be able to probably ever replace), however any swing voters are going to be looking at the pocket book, no way is there anything in Obama’s four years or upcoming years are good for him. Romney needs to attack Obama as hard as he went after Republican candidates. Gloves off, take no prisoners.
Gingrich's my guy, now that Santorum has dropped out, but any given GOP candidate will crush Obama, given that in 2008, he outspent McCain 3 to 1 and only beat him by 6% in the popular vote. The GOP nominee will probably beat Obama in campaign fund-raising this year, because of the defection of former Obama supporters who thought the guy was a moderate. Romney alone is out-raising Obama on Wall Street, and for a while, Mittens was sharing the stage with other GOP candidates who were also getting Wall Street money. An electoral vote landslide (>10% margin of victory in electoral votes) is a given - the only question is the magnitude. And that will depend on Romney choosing a solid conservative as veep.
You guys just don’t get it. We’re tired of RINOs, so we want to stay home, or write in someone.
When Obama wins, the GOP-e will get the message!
Right?
No Romney, no way. Just as SoConPubbie.
I am with you. Voting ABO this year.
Oh joy. Fauxbama leads Nobama. Hooray.
I am voting CO this year.
I’m with you, I wanted Palin, Cain, and Newt in that order. but at the end of the day I don’t care who it is as long as it isn’t obama.
There is the first issue. This will not work for Romney as well as it did for McCain. That is also assuming he would pick a Conservative.
Gallup?
I didn't see this coming.
For the last year I've been upsetting people at Free Republic with my prediction that Obama would be easily reelected.
The way I look at it, Mittens declined to comment on the Zimmerman imbroglio. That set him apart - in a good way - from both Obama and Santorum (my guy until he dropped out), whose common stance was, essentially, "get a rope".
Lets just get obama the hell out of office and then we can fight myth.
Obama needs to go, period. He is a plague on this nation, a tyrant, a destroyer of everything we hold dear, etc.
FFFUUUUBBBOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The USA will get the message. It will be game, set, and match for the US of A. This country will be transformed by Obama and put on a path to permanent decline and destruction. Obamacare will be the last nail in the coffin of this country as the Left and the welfare state bankrupt the country. In the interim, they will strip and plunder DOD (Guns vs Butter) and increase taxes to keep the welfare state treading water for a little longer.
America will look like CA demographically and economically in the next 40 years. The Dems will be the permanent majority party and the vision and values of our Founders will be a distant memory save for a vestigal Constitution that no longer serves any real purpose. Obama will appoint two to three more justices to SCOTUS in the mold of Kagan and Sotomayor.
I guess that will serve the GOP Establishment right. In fact, maybe you should work hard to get Obama reelected to ensure that the message is sent.
You know, this whole whinning and lamentations over Romney reminds me of a scene from a comedy. A guy is being stopped by police for some crime, and the guy essentially takes himself hostage pulls out his gun and shouts to the police, stop, or I’ll shoot myself!
Romney is bad, but hussein is worse. Like it or not, and I do not, there are only 2 choices. Hussein will transform this nation into a socialist dictatorship. It is much less likely that Romney would do the same thing. Those who believe that Romney would be more dangerous should make the case right here and vote for hussein.
“Obama needs to go, period. He is a plague on this nation, a tyrant, a destroyer of everything we hold dear, etc.”
I’m told here that Romney would be worse.
Vote for the more conservative candidate. Always. Even if the more conservative is not A conservative, vote for the more conservative.
Our grand kids will get the message.
“I guess that will serve the GOP Establishment right. In fact, maybe you should work hard to get Obama reelected to ensure that the message is sent.”
Exactly!
See, the FR message is getting out. We are the resistance.
See Post 26. Stay home, and there may not be an election in 2016.
Sarah was always my choice. all i know is we cannot afford 4 more years of this guy. After 4 more years there won’t be some glorious conservative march into power. we might win from the right at that point but after 4 more years what will be won? The right to slowly guide America into 3rd world status? The right to bargain with the rest of the world over our debt like Greece? The chance to finally restructure government benefits when the number getting aid and govt pensions combined will be over 60%? Hows that going to work? We may get in but it won’t be glorious.
Romney will be a stronger candidate then McCain was. If not for Sara Palin McCain would have lost by 20 percent.
“See Post 26. Stay home, and there may not be an election in 2016.”
Don’t over think this.
FR says: No Romney, no way.
Stay home, or write in.
Send the GOPe a message.
Our grand kids will get the message....
The plain and awful truth.
Fake poll to get Romney nominated.
We must hold their feet to the fire!
Already Dick Cheney is dead to me for his glowing endorsement.
IF Bachmann or Palin endorse Mitt, they must be removed from office or influence of the TP.
Lesser of two evils II?
“When Obama wins, the GOP-e will get the message!”
Just like they did in 08?
Conservatives fit the Einstein’s definition of insanity.
Pushing, prodding, cajoling the GOP into conservatism is FAIL.
We need to start a new party.
Romney might be worse than Obama - I agree 100%
BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT BUT
There is also a chance, whether its 15% or 50% that Mittens will be bettern than Obama.
There is 0% chance Obama will be any better in a second term than we have seen in the last four years, and all signs point to far worse under Obama in a second term.
I am voting for ABO in november based on that chance, albeight small, that mittens will be better than Obama, not that I am convinced he will or wont be.
Does that make sense?
I voted third party in 1992, 1996, 2004, and 2008 in an attempt to send a message to the GOP.
So far, it isn't working out quite like I planned.....
Romney loves himself. Obama hates America. Why can’t people see that the former is WAY better than the latter?
I’m not voting for Romney, but could I actually cheer an Obama victory?? Don’ think so....
Only the number of votes in the electoral college can elect a POTUS... National polls won’t matter.
“IMHO, anyway you cut it, Obama losing is good...very good. Hes intent on willfully taking the country down and four more years will do potentially irreprable harm.
We can and will survive Romney...can probably even hold his feet to his campaign pledges.”
The difference between a Romney administration from 2013-2017 vs. a second term for Obama is, that with the former, conservatives “live to fight again” in the political realm. With the latter, there may not be “a fight next time”, other than by force of arms.
Some could be chomping at the bit for just such a struggle, but one must be careful about what one wishes for. Although we as a fragmenting nation may indeed be headed in that direction, it’s not “Seven Days In May” time quite yet....
“Does that make sense?”
Not to the PTB here at FR. I’m going with the consensus here.
The election is 7+ months away. In politics that is a lifetime. This poll is, in and of itself, meaningless. Here’s why:
The MSM are pushing Romney. This poll is specifically meant to discourage Conservatives. The way you’re babbling on about Romney, a national socialist (fascist) being no way worse that Obama, the left-wing in this country is manipulating the fears of folks like you successfully.
“Im not voting for Romney, but could I actually cheer an Obama victory?? Don think so....”
It’s a distinction without difference.
” An electoral vote landslide (>10% margin of victory in electoral votes) is a given - the only question is the magnitude. And that will depend on Romney choosing a solid conservative as veep.”
I wish I had your optimism, but I don’t.
Here’s my prediction (from another thread):
Romney wins it 270 to 268 electoral votes.
Obama gets:
CA
CO
CT
DC
DE
HI
IA
IL
MA
MD
ME
MI
MN
NM
NV
NY
OR
PA
RI
VT
WA
WI
Romney gets the rest, including Florida, Virginia, and Ohio. Without ALL of these, he loses.
Even with the numbers above, Nebraska could throw a wrench into things because their electoral votes are split (not winner-take-all). Suppose Obama wins the district that includes Omaha? In that case, wouldnt it end up as a 269-269 tie? (Note, Maine also assigns electoral votes proportionally, but I expect Obama to win everything there).
Too bad the Republican legislature of Pennsylvania failed to pass legislation making PA a proportionally-assigned electoral vote state. If that were the case, Romney might pick up at least half of the evs there.
But this election isnt going to be easy.
Its going to be a squeaker or a blowout.
And for the R guy, the best he can hope for is being the squeaker....
Thats the way I see it...
