Newt Gingrich, a man divided
The Washington Post ^ | 04/16/2012 | Rachel Weiner

Here’s a series of recent quotes in which Gingrich appears to be a man divided.

* “If [Romney] can't get to 1,144 on the 26th of June, the last primary, then it is going to be a wide-open electronic convention for 60 days of talking among the American people.” — CNN interview, March 26

* “Either Romney will self destruct, or Romney will be the nominee.” — Lunch with supporters, April 2

* “I’m trying to get to an open convention to see what would happen ... I’m not going to beat Romney head to head, but ... if we have an open convention, the truth is, nobody knows what would happen.” — ABC News interview, April 4

Santorum was our one (imperfect) chance to stop Romney but Newt siphoned off just enough conservative votes to cost him

Get real...everybody knows the only thing that jetted Santorum after Iowa was the media push they gave him under the direction of the Romney team and that with Pauls help.

They all know Rick and it doesn't take much to fire up his ego...they lit it and off he went somehow believing he could win...and those in the know knew this was a set up. Santorum 's gaffs over and over and over again were the laughstock to many democrates but they loved him none the less...even voted for him crossing to the other side.... So you've got to be nuts to imagine Rick was ever seriously being considered by the heavy weights....Rick will always and forever be their go to man to play the role they give him...nothing more... It was that way In pa....and it's been that way in Congress.

Every sane political commentator agrees with this including the Romney Team.

Ha! ..so you're plugging for the Romney team now? and we know who the political pundits are in the bag for....looks like you too.

It was never Newt that took Santorum's win.....Santorum didn't need any help, with all his twisted tongue remarks and misteps time and again, he did it all by his little self....plus...he was running a two man race with Romney, when Newt and Paul both stood back and let him run with it,...he failed to pull it off of course...just enough distraction to keep Romney going without a worry of Newt.

It wasn’t the fact that he actually earned his win in Iowa?

How many republican candidates have won 10 states in a Republican primary?

Seems to me that he caught fire and the earned support of the majority of conservatives in the race. We should be thankful that he did run and establish himself as a serious contender.

I really hope that you step over the line and Jim bans your small, vindictive little butt.

Yes - I agree! I am certain he has a vindictive butt, just not sure it's small or little...

Though you really need to cut Santorum supporters some slack, not only did Rick quit on them, but God changed His mind about calling him... bummer city, bigtime.

So, you post a Washington Post BLOG article, that features only quotes, taken out of context, and then a few snarky comments at the end.

And you post that here?

The truth shall set you free.

Ever since Gingrich was roundly thrashed in FL, he never stood a snowball in hell’s chance. He had baggage heavy enough to sink a fleet of cruise liners and an unbridgeable gender gap. Santorum was the ONLY one who could have defeated Romney. But of course you guys are in denial. Funny that Newt doesn’t speak anymore of his pie-in-the-sky $2.50 gas/gal in two years and his permanent moon based colonies in eight years. After Santorum’s spectacular one-day trifecta win, Newt should have decamped, pulled out of the race, and gone home.
