LOS ANGELES - Trial is winding down for a former NASA-affiliated computer specialist who alleges he was fired because of his belief in intelligent design.

Closing arguments began Monday in David Coppedge's wrongful-termination case against NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Coppedge worked as a team lead on the Cassini mission exploring Saturn. He claims he was discriminated against because he engaged his co-workers in conversations about intelligent design and handed out DVDs on the idea while at work.

Intelligent design is the belief that a higher power had a hand in creation because life is too complex to have developed through evolution alone.

Rocketry and evolution are on different tracks.

Along with the medical researcher who was let go because he didn’t believe in DNA and the math teacher let go because she had faith that there was no such thing as a constant ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Wonder if they will play that late 1960’s TV filler that ends:

“I reached out my hand
and touched
The face of God”

Still gives me patriotic chills!

Your analogy is wrong. Intelligent design is not related to rocket science like DNA is to medicine. Intelligent design is not even incompatible with evidence of evolutionary change. All it means is one might believe that change is governed by natural laws established by a Creator.

What this really is about is someone expressing an opinion that others found annoying. So what if they guy believed in intelligent design or even handed out DVDs at work? Um, ever heard of saying, “No” or, “I’m not interested” to a coworker?

If I were in a rocket to Mars, I would not like to think that an “intelligent designer” had designed my rocket. The guy should be transferred to the Post Office. Now, if I could be convinced that THE “Intelligent Designer” had designed my rocket, I’d be fine.

You must be attempting sarcasm, because intelligent design has nothing whatsoever to do with designing your “rocket to Mars.” So the guy believes a Creator established the universe. What’s the big deal? So he proselytized his coworkers at work? Again, what’s the beef? I have to work with people all the time who don’t share my beliefs about a range of topics. I even have to work with people who are sometimes uncomfortable to be around, like ones who openly ridicule Christianity. So what? I don’t go around trying to get everyone who doesn’t agree with me fired.

HE was fired because the project he was working with is winding down.

Hopefully the judge will be rational. You shouldn’t spread the word on company time.

Yeah, if you don’t believe the universe pulled itself out of its own non-existent ear, you don’t have any home with the people who do.
