Dog-Eating and Obama’s Identity
PJ Media ^ | 4/19/2012 | David "Spengler" Goldman

Posted on 04/19/2012 2:09:20 PM PDT by mojito

What a careful reader will take away from Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams of My Father is not only that the president used to eat dog meat, but more importantly, that he identifies with dog-eaters. He wants us to understand that he is one of them. Obama’s most severe critics on the right think of Obama as a socialist, for example, Dinesh d’Souza, or Stanley Kurtz in his exhaustively-researched book Radical-in-Chief. Obama used to attend the annual “Socialist Scholars Conference” in New York, which was a hard-core affair; I went to a couple of them, and they weren’t for the curious. But there is something far more visceral, more existential to the president’s dislike of the United States, and that arises from his early residence in the Third World, and his identification with the people of the Third World whose lives are disrupted by the creative destruction that America has unleashed.

Obama is the son of a Kenyan Muslim father, the stepson of an Indonesian Muslim, and the child, most of all, of an American anthropologist who devoted her career to protecting Indonesian traditional life against the depredations of the global marketplace. Her doctoral dissertation, “Peasant blacksmithing in Indonesia: surviving against all odds,” celebrated traditional cultures hanging on desperately in the face of the global economic marketplace.

Ms. Dunham was not only a Communist fellow-traveler, but the sort of 1960s woman who (as we used to say) “put her body on the line,” first by marrying two Third World men, and then by spending her career in the Third World. It is no surprise that Obama considers the Third World morally superior to the United States.

Not only that, but she sent little Barry away from Indonesia back to the US to be educated in US schools, even before her marriage to Lolo fell apart.

Notice she didn't send him to a rural Indonesian village to become a peasant blacksmith, while bemoaning the loss of that way of life.

Ann Dunham Soetoro to Indonesians: "Science and techonology and education for me (and little Barry), but not for thee."

Well, I imagine most people that bought it only did so because it "felt good," not because they could actually read. The rest of us didn't care enough to read it because we figured an empty suit could only write an empty dust cover.

Ms. Dunham was not only a Communist fellow-traveler

The actual quote is

"If you were concerned about something going wrong in the world, Stanley would know about it first," said Chip Wall, who described her as "a fellow traveler. . . . We were liberals before we knew what liberals were."

It's not at all clear that classmate Chip was saying that fellow liberal SAD supported the Communist party line. What he did mean is anybody's guess, and some guesses will be better than "Spengler's."

What a careful reader will take away from Barack Obama’s memoir Dreams of My Father is not only that the president used to eat dog meat, but more importantly, that he identifies with dog-eaters.

That's not actually the title of the book (but it's not like anybody actually read it, so I'll let that go).

Romney's putting the dog in a carrier on the car's roof somehow gets translated by liberal bloggers and talking-heads as an act of deliberate cruelty. It wasn't and wouldn't have been seen as such at the time.

We travel at 55 mph in a metal box (a car) and it wouldn't have been obvious forty years ago that taking a dog in a metal box (an animal carrier) at the same speed would have been cruel or unusual.

It was right to bring up Obama's comment about eating dog when the Obama people and the media tried to portray Romney as gratuitously cruel to animals. But I'm not sure that one can hang all this ideological baggage on a "Hey, I once ate dog, or snake, or grasshopper" statement.

It really isn’t unfair at all to bring Obama’s canine consumption to public attention. The president isn’t really one of us. He’s a dog-eater. He tells the story in his memoir to emphasize that viscerally, Obama identifies with the Third World of his upbringing more than with the America of his adulthood. It is our great misfortune to have a president who dislikes our country at this juncture in our history.

Spengler goes from expressing a certain amount of pity for dog-eating populations to this "they're not like us and Obama identifies with them, so he's one of them not one of us." That doesn't really follow from the facts.

Maybe Obama feels something like the pity Spengler expressed earlier. Or maybe he's just saying "Hey, I ate dog once. How about that, guys?" The identification with the dog-eaters and the hatred for the rest of us may be something "Spengler" is reading into a more innocent and less ideological remark.

There are Chinese in every part of Indonesia. As in Malaysia and elsewhere, the Chinese have every legal prerogative to continue eating pork, dog, monkey and anything else that ever moved.

They do so.

Moslems might not eat those things but in Indonesia there are Chinese origin people who fake it so they can benefit from being considered part of the ruling class of Moslems.

I have no doubt a guy named S'oe'taro would happily snag some dog meat.

As a Viet Nam Veteran I have been in many parts of Indonesia and could address the dog and cat menu.

Also, having been around forty years ago I can tell you the speed limit wasn’t 55 it was 70 and at that speed it would have been cruel and unusual punishment to have a dog strapped in a carrier outside of the auto, even back then.

If I was born by then I was a child in those days. If my dad told me to put the dog in a carrier on the roof (and he might have if we had a dog) I would have done it. I wonder how many people who are horrified, horrified by this now would have done the same if they'd been around back then.

Romney was brutally cruel to that dog, if your dad had told you to put his cage up on the roof of the car in Massachusetts, then he would have been breaking the law.

It was a 12 hour trip on the freeway, and part way along, the treatment made the dog sick and diarrhea was flowing over the car, that forced Romney to stop and hose down the car, the cage, the dog, and then get back on the freeway with the dog wet this time.

The media has two different reports of what happened to the dog, but they both reveal that Mitt got. rid of the dog after this abusive trip.
One version is that the dog ran off after they arrived, this is the supposed account by two of the sons.
The other is the official Romney response that they sent him to live with Ann’s sister in California, either way, this incident was the end of Seamus for Mitt.

“As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ‘’Dad!’’ he yelled. ‘’Gross!’’ A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.
Mr. Romney responded to his dog’s defecation by “coolly” stopping at a gas station where he “borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway” with Seamus strapped back on the roof.”

Ansel, I am a sheepdog as well, and as such, I will pick and choose my battles. It makes no sense to get into the middle of the dog issue between Obama and Romney. They are both losers. I know people who have eaten dog but they don’t play the issue up by telling others or by putting it in a book. Also, those of us who were adults forty years ago know what Romney did to his dog WAS cruel and unusual.

We have the greatest country known to have ever existed about to be flushed down the toilet by both of these individuals. That’s where I choose my battles, not with their petty campaign babble.

It's not at all clear that classmate Chip was saying that fellow liberal SAD supported the Communist party line. What he did mean is anybody's guess, and some guesses will be better than "Spengler's."

It is clear that SAD was closely involved with communism long before she left WA state.

Barack Obama: Red Diaper Baby

...Obama's future mother, Stanley Ann Dunham could attend Mercer Island high school.

What was special about Mercer Island High School? The Chicago Tribune explains:

"In 1955, the chairman of the Mercer Island school board, John Stenhouse, testified before the House Un-American Activities Subcommittee that he had been a member of the Communist Party."

After intense debate, Stenhouse decided not to resign from the school board according to an April 11, 1955 account in Time Magazine. While others demanded Stenhouse's resignation, the Dunhams gravitated towards his school.

As with Obama, his mother's generation of these pseudo-intellectual leftist high schoolers found a way to think of themselves as superior. How? By surrounding themselves with co-thinkers. The Seattle Times continues:

One respite was found in a wing of Mercer Island High called "anarchy alley." Jim Wichterman taught a wide-open philosophy course that included Karl Marx. Next door, Val Foubert taught a rigorous dose of literature, including Margaret Mead's writings on homosexuality.

Those classes prompted what Wichterman, now 80 and retired in Ellensburg, called "mothers' marches" of parents outraged at the curriculum.

Dunham thrived in the environment, Wichterman said.

The Chicago Tribune mentions a description of the Dunham's chosen church as "The Little Red Church on the Hill". According to its own website, East Shore Unitarian Church got that name because of, "Well-publicized debates and forums on such controversial subjects as the admission of ‘Red China' to the United Nations...." The fact that John Stenhouse once served as church president might also have contributed to the "red" label.

Jim Treacher broke the the sad news yesterday that Mr. Wonderful eats dogs.

With Lolo, I learned how to eat small green chill peppers raw with dinner (plenty of rice), and, away from the dinner table, I was introduced to dog meat (tough), snake meat (tougher), and roasted grasshopper (crunchy). Like many Indonesians, Lolo followed a brand of Islam that could make room for the remnants of more ancient animist and Hindu faiths. He explained that a man took on the powers of whatever he ate: One day soon, he promised, he would bring home a piece of tiger meat for us to share.”

Lanny Davis has a really impassioned attack online against Romney for animal cruelty.

But it's quite transparent.

He rages against Romney because Mitt's a Republican (more or less), and you rage against him because he's a Mormon.

Gail Collins, a New York Times columnist has mentioned Shamus over 50 times in print. Is she another dog lover?

I'm trying to figure out just what the practice was at the time and how people would have reacted at the time and whether this would have been regarded as so cruel or criminal at the time that people wouldn't do it.

Maybe 1983 was a little late, and maybe you guys are right, but my own childhood memory of the 1970s was that people weren't as panicky about things like dog carriers on roofs or helmets on cyclists.

PS, the Romney's didn't give Shamus away to a relative until some years after this incident. If the dog had problems, we don't know that they were related to the vacation trip, and we don't know how old Shamus was when the problems started.

No one has ever seen a dog in a cage on the roof of a car on the freeway before Romney, so quit trying to pretend that people use to do that, quit lying about that.

You seem to be lying about what happened to the abused dog as well, the latest reporting is that two of the sons have said that the dog ran away when they arrived in Canada, the dishonest, pro-abortion, Planned Parenthood supporting Ann Romney claims that they gave him away and shipped him off.

What is your source for your claim that they kept him for years afterward?

Sometimes you might want to just step back for a minute and ask how other people who don't know you personally are going to read what you say.

Based on what you actually post here, his being a Mormon is one of those "many other reasons."

You wouldn't throw in buzzwords like "Mormon bishop," "cult," "not a Christian," and "Joseph Smith" so often if it were just about politics.

My own personal favorite was the post about how Romney wants to be or expects to be a god someday. That's pretty far removed from politics and current issues.

What is your source for your claim that they kept him for years afterward?

This article, via Shamus's Wikipedia page (see next paragraph). Yes, that's right, you guys have made it possible for poor Shamus to become that famous. This may give a whole new meaning to the phrase "Yellow Dog Democrat."

Mitt Romney's sister Jane provided this photo as evidence that Seamus was no ordinary dog. She says he was such a social dog that he often left Mitt Romney's Belmont home to visit his "dog friends" around town. "He kept ending up at the pound," she says. "They were worried about him getting hit crossing the street." So a few years after Seamus's ride to Canada, Mitt sent Seamus to live for a time with Jane and her family in California. "We had more space, so he could roam more freely," she says. Introducing Shamus Romney: "Mr. Personality

You are a prolific liar for Romney, a Romney troll.

Being a powerful leader in an anti-Christian cult is one of the countless negatives about the Bishop and powerful cult leader, (and fanatic beliver, who expects to be a GOD himself) , but as a Romney troll you have read years worth of our political exposure of Governor Romney, from Jim Robinson to me to vast numbers of freeepers exposing Romney’s anti-conservatism and liberalism, you have been exposed to all of the videos and sourced stories, unfortunantly you ignore those posts but there is no doubt that you have been exposed to the truth about Romney, a whole lot of it from directly to you, yet as a liar and a troll, here you are pretending that this is a fresh new meeting.

As a Romney troll, you treat each of your posts as a chance to tell a lie, to ignore all truth in regards to Romney, and to try and sell whatever you think that you can get away with, this thread is a good example of that, you are slip sliding all over the place.

The Romney’s claim one story about how they got rid of their do, there is another.
From my previous post, *””You seem to be lying about what happened to the abused dog as well, the latest reporting is that two of the sons have said that the dog ran away when they arrived in Canada, the dishonest, pro-abortion, Planned Parenthood supporting Ann Romney claims that they gave him away and shipped him off.””*

According to the cult leader himself, his dog ALWAYS rode on top of the car (“He scrambled up there every time we went on trips,” Mr. Romney said. “He got it all by himself and enjoyed it.”), that is ridiculous.

From wikipedia: The Massachusetts American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) stated that Romney’s actions may have been illegal under Massachusetts law, though the statute of limitations has passed. Ingrid Newkirk, the president of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has labeled the incident as animal cruelty and torture.[5] According to Russell Cummings, a professor of aerospace engineering at California Polytechnic State University, Seamus could have had around three pounds (ten pounds per square foot) of air pressure pressing against his head during the trip. Cummings’ wife, a veterinarian, said that she was worried that the air flow could cause fatigue and dehydration of the eyes.[6]

And this disputes the political families account from the lying, pro-abortion, Ann Romney.
http://www.politicker.com/2012/01/31/did-mitt-romneys-dog-seek-asylum-in-canada/
Excerpted below: “Mitt Romney may not have told the whole truth about the scandalous tale of his Irish Setter, Seamus, being strapped to the roof of his car during a 12-hour [650miles] family road trip to Canada. According to a trusted Politicker tipster, two of Mr. Romney’s sons had an off-record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983.

Mr. Romney’s wife, Ann, has previously said Seamus survived the trip and went on to live to a “ripe old age.” As of this writing, Mr. Romney’s campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment on this story. “
(snip)
““He scrambled up there every time we went on trips,” Mr. Romney said. “He got it all by himself and enjoyed it.”

Mr. Romney and his wife clearly want the world to think that, despite defecating himself, Seamus had a pleasant trip to Canada and a long life in the Romney household. However, based on what Mr. Romney’s sons allegedly told reporters about Seamus going on the lam in Canada, Seamus didn’t like being strapped to the car enough to stick around for the return trip.”

Snap out of it man.

A business executive putting a dog in a cage on the roof of a car for a 650 mile trip that makes the dog sick, and grossing out the family, and then he hoses the dogs cage and the dog himself, and continues down the freeway on a 12 hour cross country trip with the dog wet and ill, is a sick SOB.

A 10 year old boy in Indonesia sampling dog meat from a food stand at the instruction of his Indonesian step father, what is that supposed to mean?

If a troll is "someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion" that describes you much better than me.

Inflammatory you certainly are, and you're also trying to provoke emotional responses. It sounds like to you a troll is just somebody who dares to disagree with you or just somebody who gets in the way of your anti-Mormon tirades.

Romney will be the nominee. Some people with impeccable conservative credentials support him. He's not my favorite politician and he wouldn't be my first choice for President, but when I see things that strike me as distorted or biased I do sometimes respond.

When you think of all the things we don't know about Obama, all the things the press doesn't report, and then hearing about this dog story over and over and over again -- do you really want to be a part of that? All the feigned outrage from people who are against Romney for other reasons?

A half-remembered incident from a generation ago, from a time when kids cycled without helmets and rode in cars without special car seats, disqualifies someone for the presidency?

You are trying to promote Mitt Romney on freerepublic.

I don’t get it, but you aren’t very good at it.

You are definitely a lying troll.

A troll is someone who gets on a conservative, anti-Romney site, and devotes themselves to promoting Romney, while trying to keep from being zotted.

A reminder for those who are not receiving the message:

Romney is a pathological compulsive liar. Lie after lie papered over with more lies. Doesn’t even flinch when caught in bald faced lies, simply tells another big whopper to cover up or dodge the issue. Funny thing, the man actually seems to believe his own latest lies and simply ignores the glaring record of his past actions/lies. And you have true blue establishment elite RINO Republicans like Karl Rove enabling and backing up his lies. Their motivation is simply to hang on to power (and riches) any way they can.

I’ve stated many times since Romney started running for the presidency way back when that I’d never vote for him and I will not. He cannot lie his way out of his decades long record of support for abortion, Roe v Wade, planned parenthood, gay rights, gun control, global warming, amnesty, liberal judges, big government, compulsory or socialized health care (RomneyCommieCare), mandates, Keynesian economics, support and approval of TARP, bailouts, stimulus packages, i.e, every damn liberal progressive issue that comes down the pike.

C’mon. These are the reasons the tea party sprang up and the reasons he and Rove loathe the tea party and our tea party conservative candidates. Romney famously expressed his loathing for Reagan-Bush conservatism several years ago when he was trying to run to the left of Ted Kennedy and now he’s cloaking himself in Reagan conservatism, knowing full well that it’s a lie, but he knows it’s the only way he can possibly win, er buy the Republican nomination.

Screw Romney!! I absolutely will not support or vote for a proven compulsive liar with a known record of abortion and big government socialism, liberal appointments, etc. He still lies about RomneyCommieCare today. Calls it a “conservative solution.” Get real!!

Listen to what Ronald Reagan had to say about the elites pushing socialism on America via compulsory health insurance:

Ronald Reagan speaks out against RomneyCommieCare

There will be no campaign for this Massachusetts liberal liar on FR!!

Damn the libs and RINOS, full steam ahead!!

I guess I touched some kind of nerve.

Karl Rove a "true blue establishment elite RINO Republican"?

Like Nelson Rockefeller or Henry Cabot Lodge?

If Rove is the Establishment or the Elite, then the Establishment or Elite is already dead.

No, you are merely a years long Romney troll, a particularly sleazy, dishonest one. You have no integrity or dignity, truth and conservatism are unknown to you, nothing means anything to you but serving Romney in your oily, Gollum like obsessive manner.

Do you prefer the politics of Jim Robinson and freerepublic, or those of Karl Rove and Mitt Romney and the gop-e?

To quote JR, the man you show so much disrespect to, and on who's forum you troll and lie, and push Romney.

NOTICE: FR DOES NOT AND WILL NOT SUPPORT ABORTIONIST, GAY RIGHTS PUSHING BIG GOVERNMENT STATISTS FOR PRESIDENT!!

This message is intended for those posters on FR who seem to have missed my prior statements in this regard and insist on advocating for these bastards.

I'd rather shut the place down than be involved in any effort to install abortionist/gay rights pushing RINOS like Romney or Giuliani into the White House!!

Do NOT push this crap on FR. Take your business elsewhere!! And I don't care how long you've been here!!
