New Culture Of Irresponsibility
IBD Editorials ^ | April 19, 2012

Leadership: What do the GSA spending scandal, the Secret Service sex scandal and Leon Panetta's expensive weekend trips home have in common? They stem from a culture of irresponsibility set by the man in the White House.

When President Obama came to Washington, he promised to usher in a "new era of responsibility," one where everyone would recognize "duties to ourselves, our nation and the world." But Obama has delivered the opposite.

He's used the presidency to lavish himself and his family with hugely expensive perks. He's used the Treasury as a piggy bank to reward donors and friends. He's blurred the line between campaign trips and presidential business. And let's not forget the fact that he's driving the country towards a financial cliff.

Since taking office, for example, the Obamas have jetted off on 16 vacations, with one — their 2011 Christmas vacation in Hawaii — costing taxpayers more than $1.5 million. His daughter's spring break in Mexico required a massive protection detail.

Just for kicks, Obama flew himself and British Prime Minister David Cameron to Ohio for an NCAA basketball game, at a cost of $365,000.

When a local TV reporter grilled Obama about his vacationing ways, he airily dismissed the complaint. "I'm raising a family here," he said, and besides, "most folks understand how hard I work."

Hmmph. I remember raising three, not two, girls. We’re a military family. Our vacations were our bee-line 12 hour a day drives cross country to our new duty stations. Our ‘holidays’ were local camping and day trips. But of course, as a military officer my husband didn’t work hard...

Freedom, Definition

Old Definition = Freedom to live your life even it means you fail miserably at it.

New Definition = Freedom from Responsibility so you can live your life any way you want without responsibility.

I love IBD.

What did Panetta do when he was with the CIA? Defense or CIA, he should stay in DC--those positions are too important. Better for his family to visit him.

The corruption flows from the top down in this administration. I shut Bill O’Reilly off the other evening when one of his guests made the statement that the whole tone of the Obama Administration—the GSA corruption, Secret Service scandal and wasteful spending in general—is set by the person at the top and O’Reilly vehemently disagreed.

Wouldn't it be more cost and time effective for Leon to spend his weekends at Camp David?

It's not like he'd be stuck in a Motel 6.

Quadruple posts! Wow! A bit snide, are we? But no, I got involved with the community wherever we went, started a summer preschool in Germany then spent 20 plus years working at the Army Education Center teaching soldiers. I hate bon bons, soap operas, etc. And I’m keeping it up now that we’re retired.

Mes culpa, mea maxima cupa on the quad posts. I was doing it from an Ipad and using the touch screen “keyboard.” The rest was supportive sarcasm.
