For fifteen years, the Wizard of the cesspool FreeRepublic has been beyond adamant that his little sewer would never -never- adopt an advertising, pay, or membership model. Well, what have we here?

I've checked with an ad agency. We can probably raise the funds we need to operate FR at our current level and at the current market price for online advertising if we run a banner ad at the top of every page and at least one rectangular ad in the above the fold body of the page and a couple rectangular ads in the sidebar. If that doesn't generate enough revenue, we can also run pop ups or pop unders and we can even run audio and video ads if need be. But of course, if we go full bore commercial, we'd have to insure strict copyright compliance with very brief excerpting of all articles to avoid lawsuits. And the agency would require that we install a filter to censor out any bad or unacceptable words in our posts.
Or, of course, there's always the membership model. We could setup a members only system where paying members get full access and non-paying members get throttled back, etc.
I don't like either of the above models and think we'd soon lose a lot of our readers and participants. Of course that may happen anyway if we can't fund it and if we cannot get our equipment problem under control, or if my refusal to vote for or support an abortionist/homosexualist/statist who has plans to install ObamaCare, er, I mean RomneyCare into all 50 states runs everyone off.
The donation model has served us very well since 1997 when we first started using it. It's very clean, uncomplicated and we attract participants who perhaps can't afford membership dues but do want to join the discussion and join our rallies, protests, prayer sessions, etc. And the advertising model would probably bring in the revenue, but it comes with strings attached.
I'm sure there are other ways and ways to combine features of various models, sell books, cds, gear, etc, offer no ads for paid subscribers, etc, even ISP services, but all of these also complicate matters.
I'm an old dog and I like to avoid new tricks, new complications, additional overhead, additional accounting, additional rules and regulations, etc, wherever possible. I like to stick to simplicity and with what works.

I figured the DUmmies would be rejoicing in some of the recent flamewars around here.
I still think as a family we should lighten up on each other. There is plenty out there in the world for us to gnash our teeth about, who we will be stuck with as the GOP nominee should not be something we tear each other’s butts off about.
When I vote in our Texas primary next month, I’ll be throwing mine at Gingrich if his name is there.
But come November, we have to get rid of the fraud we have now in the top slot. As I have stated before, I’ll vote for a dead skunk that has been laying in the hot Texas sun for a week over Obamalamadingdong. Even if his name is Rmoney.
Sorry bro, this is my honest opinion and I doubt we will have more than two options in the top slot. I ain’t voting for the Pretenda from Kenya.

Free marketing is always a good idea and it would also help to continue spreading the word about FreeRepublic. I like it.
Wizard of the Cesspool! LOL! I once tried to post to one DUmp thread.....I said something like "Hello, I support the Vets as well..". I was booted in 2 hours. Seems someone on FR also posts under the handle ScreamingFist. Do what you have to do to keep the site up JimRob (AKA WootCP).

Depends on your definition of “hurt.” Eternity in hell sounds pretty painful. The possible loss of my amassed fortune (LOL) is nothing.
I see two other alternatives.
Cut costs through more modern hardware and software. That cloud environment is becoming more mature, and we might want to take a took at it. Also, do we really need 15 years of postings online?
Find a rich patron, one of those billionaires who supported Newt or Rick. I would understand why you wouldn’t want to be relying on one guy, but the amount this place costs is small compared to what they have been spending on the election.
A day without FreeRepublic is a day without sunshine. May FR keep on shining the light of truth!
I’m more than happy to donate some time and talent for FReeper gear with the proceeds going to keep the lights on. JimRob has said he’d rather not and that’s OK too but my offer still stands.
I would run it independent of FR with a trusted FReeper running the online store and we could send our designs on to him and let him manage things from there.

Run a BINGO thread every few weeks on Friday nights, with PayPal taking the donations, problem solved.

I’m fairly sure NAMBLA sponsors DU. Can’t say for sure ‘cause there is no way I’m going to check it out.
Its not my intention to make this a theological discussion of accepting one evil to avoid a greater one, but a practical admission that the primary is over.
