Bail set at $150G for George Zimmerman while he awaits trial in Trayvon Martin shooting death

URGENT: A Florida judge said George Zimmerman can be released on $150,000 bail as he awaits trial for the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Circuit Judge Kenneth Lester set several conditions Friday for Zimmerman's release. He cannot have any firearms, drink alcohol or use drugs and must observe a curfew. The judge said details need to be worked out between Zimmerman's attorney and law enforcement, and that Zimmerman will not be released Friday.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder in the 17-year-old Martin's death during a February confrontation in a Sanford, Fla., gated community. He is claiming self-defense.

The bail for Zimmerman was announced Friday shortly after he took the witness stand, telling the parents of Martin, "I am sorry for the loss of your son," but standing by his claim that he killed the teen in self-defense.

Zimmerman told Martin's parents, who were present in the courtroom, that he did not know that Martin was 17 and that he was unarmed during their February confrontation in a central Florida neighborhood.

"I did not know how old he was," Zimmerman said. "I thought he was a little younger than I am. I did not know if he was armed or not."

Somebody for the Martin family spoke (screeched) to the press immediately after Z’s lawyer did. He was so angry that Z got out on bail that he could barely speak.

So much for “all we want is for him to be arrested”, which everybody knew was a lie.

Legal experts had earlier predicted Zimmerman would likely be granted bail. Key factors include his ties to the local community and that he doesn’t appear to be a flight risk since he turned himself in voluntarily after he was charged last week. He also has never been convicted of a serious crime, which would indicate he doesn’t pose a threat to society.

“Although it’s not routine for people charged with murder to get bond, they do get bond, and I think there is an excellent argument to be made in his specific case for him to be released on bond,” said defense attorney Randy McClean, who practices in Seminole County, about 15 miles northeast of Orlando.

No firearms. Not allowed to defend himself again even though there is a wanted dead-or-alive bounty on his head.

Does not mean that he can't have one or more armed friends hanging out with him 24/7.

He cannot have any firearms, drink alcohol or use drugs and must observe a curfew.

AND he will have electronic monitoring at all times. He hasn’t been convicted and they have him under house arrest.

Sex offenders have the electronic monitoring anklets and they just cut them off and disappear any time they want.

I agree with all you said and am not questioning the decision to grant bail, I am just curious how the bail level for Zimmerman compares to other 2nd degree murder cases (yes lots of variables there as you mention).

But this case is not about convicting Zimmerman, or 'justice' for Treyvon this case is about appeasement of the usual race mongers and revenge for Treyvon's death.

The low bail seems an indication of fairness on the part of the judge.

I think it is legal, though it's definitely not just. This innocent (and that's not just a technical quibble) man has been made virtually defenseless during this whole process, whether it lasts a few months or few years.

Where the heck in the Constitution does it imply the state can strip an innocent person of the constitutional right to defend himself by any legal means?

In a dramatic moment during the hearing, a detective, under questioning from O'Mara, admitted that it has no clear evidence that Zimmerman attacked Trayvon Martin first.

Oops. This is from the ABC News article.

How interesting that ABC News is publishing a picture today taken THREE minutes after the shooting showing the back of Zimmerman's head is bloody, by a neighbor.

Here's another gem from the ABC News article:

Zimmerman's parents and wife Shellie testified at the hearing by phone because they did not want to make a public appearance out of fear for their safety.

Wonderful:

And yet another gem:

Crump, the Martin family attorney, is skeptical. "How bad could it have been if they didn't take him to the hospital [and] didn't stitch him up," he said in a statement to ABC News in response to the image. "The special prosecutor has seen all the evidence and still believes George Zimmerman murdered Trayvon Martin."

Didn't this idiot attorney read the paramedics and the police reports? It clearly says there Zimmerman was stitched up at the scene before removal in the police car.

Anything to keep the " shot in the back like a rabid dog in the street" meme going, like that crazy Congresswoman.

My theory:

1. Contact between Zimmerman and Martin breaks off. Zimmerman walks back to his vehicle. Zimmerman does not know where Martin is.

2. Martin doubles back with the intention of confronting Zimmerman for whatever reason.

3. Martins jumps Zimmerman from behind and start pummeling Zimmerman , and grabbing Zimmerman's head and bouncing it into the sidewalk.

4. At some point it becomes evident to Martin there is a gun in Zimmerman's waistband and Martin goes for it.

5. A struggle for the gun ensues-- Zimmerman realizes if he loses the gun, he is a dead man.

6. In the struggle, the gun is fired into Martin at very close range(other photos taken by the same neighbor, who heard the scuffle but did not see it and who supplied ABCNews with the Zimmerman head photo, purportedly shows the powder burns on Martin's hoodie.)

Anyone seen the coroner's report yet?

Good point. I hope so. That appears to be his only option at this point. Probably prohibitively expensive for him to hire professional bodyguards.

Hope he has lots of good friends who are exquisitely patient and understanding. He's going to need them.

The overzealous, Nifong-like, politically motivated prosecutor is hiding that along with all the other exculpatory evidence from the public.

The most egregious jeopardy Zimmerman is under, is from the thug personal agents of president Obama himself. Someone should have mentioned THAT to the judge at the first opportunity, and the judge could have ruled that the so called president of the United States NOT comment further on ANY aspect of the case, in the interests of a fair trial..

That would have been very interesting.

That a normal condition for the circumstances. There’s nothing to preclude him from having someone else come to his defense.
