Gingrich's future hinges on Delaware

The future of Newt Gingrich's presidential campaign seems to hinge on the Delaware primary early next week.

"Tuesday is a big day," a source close to the Gingrich campaign told NBC News. "Newt is just waiting to see what happens on Tuesday."

Up until now, Gingrich has promised to take his campaign all the way to the Republican convention in Tampa at the end of the summer, although the odds are not in his favor.

The former House speaker has been spending the majority of his time the past three weeks in the First State. Gingrich has made at least 12 campaign stops in Delaware thus far while the presumptive GOP nominee, Mitt Romney, has held just one event there.

Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond said they are "optimistic" about the results in the state.

"Because Delaware is a small state it has allowed us to campaign effectively," Hammond said.

“We are looking for a bounce from Delaware and, with a good showing in the state, we will spend a lot of time on the phone with donors."

The campaign originally said late Friday night that the speaker would spend Monday campaigning in Delaware and then would head to Virginia (where Gingrich lives) for Tuesday. Just 30 minutes later, the campaign said Gingrich would be in North Carolina next week instead.

"Newt's North Carolina trip next week is back on - there was a communications glitch," Hammond told NBC News about the error.

The primaries on April 24 will be the first time voters take to the polls...

Gingrich's future hinges on Delaware?

Mayhap it will, or mayhap it won't.

I'm in, til Newt's out.

Gingrich will campaign in Delaware Saturday and will also campaign there Monday in a final push to pick up delegates. Hammond said Gingrich will not be dropping out any time soon, and certainly not before Tuesday.

Gingrich is done.

To think otherwise is denial, bordering on delusion.

Delaware? Yeah, seems ridiculous at first, but when you really think about this may be a reasonably smart hailmary strategy. Small state, easy for Newt to get around from event to even on the cheap, and Delaware conservatives proved in 2010 that they would vote against the establishment Republican Senate candidate (Castle) even though it means nominating the “I am not a witch” woman who was doomed to lose the general election the minute she got the nomination.

All that aside, I still think Romney will win overwhelmingly in Delaware, but it seems like a decent underdog strategy at least. Newt needs to have at least one decent showing next week and Delaware seems to make the most sense since he is going to get trounced in the rest of the states.

On what day will Romney finally get the 1,144 delegates he needs to get the nomination?

My friend, denial and delusion are voting for the GOP-e and Romney thinking he’s less a socialist then what we now have.

The following is an excerpt from Vince Haley (Newt's campaign manager) fundraising email sent out today. Sure doesn't sound like Newt's getting ready to cancel NC.

"Moreover, here is something not widely known -- the polls for the last two weeks have been showing that Newt, even as the media was coronating Romney, has been holding a remarkable residual strength in North Carolina. What does that mean?

It means Republican voters in North Carolina are in the mood to cause an upheaval -- to tell the national news media that primary voters and not a lot of elitist liberals will pick our party's nominee."

I think it also could mean the Romney campaign is up to their usual dirty tricks in NC. They keep thinking they've killed Newt, but Newt just doesn't agree. I'll stand with Newt until Newt stands down.

Gingrich can still stop Romney from getting the nomination, he just can’t get the nomination himself.

I think June 5th. But I keep being told Newts going to win by taking it to the convention. He’s already said he’ll support Romney. Not campaigning but just reporting the facts I keep getting attacked on.

He’s already said he’ll support Romney.

Newt, like Santorum, has said he will support Romney IF he is the nominee. He is not the nominee yet, he has about half of the delegates needed. And Newt has said repeatedly Romney has to earn the nomination, and when he does, he will support him.

You need to be campaigning if you aren't... FOR NEWT!!

I thought tuesday was the Pennsylvania primary. How will it help GIngrich if he does respectably in Delaware, but Romney ends up with Pa?

I thought that when Santorum dropped out, Gingrich would make a big push to take Pennsylvania.
