New Law To Require 'Black Boxes' In All Cars
New Law Mandates Black Boxes In All Cars By 2015
By Bailey Johnson
A recently passed bill will require all cars to come equipped with "black boxes" that record vehicle data. These Event Data Recorders (EDR), similar to their airplane counterparts, will record data such as speed, brake force and electrical systems monitoring. The days of a car crash being one driver's word against another look to be history.
Senate Bill 1813 (known as Map-21) mandates that automakers install EDRs in all new vehicles starting in 2015.

That’s racist.
Black Boxes?......racist swine.
I thought most cars already have this “feature”.
Someone at Fox needs to watch Schoolhouse Rock to learn the difference between a Senate Bill and a law.
Stock up on ammo..., and old Datsuns....
Sexist too.
BB = Black Box
BB = Big Brother
Coincidence?
Libertarian ping
Eventually they’ll be required in all cars, old and new, and non-transmitting cars will be subjected to being pulled over by the police.
Ha, Ha, good one.
Once again, the commie pigs are making Americans have to pay for something that they don’t want. I guess if you’re a greedy politician and this “black box” maker is in your district, it’s a good thing.
Sounds great!!! NOT!!! Now the government can tax you for how many miles you drive, tax you for where you have been, tax you for those moments when you exceed speed limits, and a whole host of other BIG BROTHER activities!!!
Well played.
Buzz off..........Who pays for it?
*************************************
Most newer cars already do this ,, simply buffers the data in the drivetrain and ABS computers ... the cost is minimal as memory (and that’s all we’re really talking about is a slightly larger non-volatile memory chip) is cheap..
someone’s going to make money “fixing” these...
Guess I better start saving my pennies for the last new car I’ll ever buy...a 2014 something or other (not a GM/FIAT/CHRYSLER though).
This has been in the works for a long, long time. I began writing my elected officials about this about 10 years ago. This not only paves the way for more government control and taxes, but its lawyer friendly too!
Insurance companies and lawyers will now have much stronger cases to assess blame.
The of course there are “malfunctions” common to every device on a modern automobile. I suspect that would be happening to mine all the time.
It’s been in the works for years.
Insurance companies are all for it.
In a way it makes sense *if* one thinks of driving as a privilege, not a right. The reasoning goes ‘why should cars be subject to less tracking than airplanes?’
heck, a camera at each corner, accelerometer and other data, a 2 minute loop recording the data that stops looping in case of an accident and thus has the last, but only the last two minutes of info...
And who will subsidize those millions who don’t have income? Another tax on producers.
I’m guessing that attaching a 240Volt “charger” to the box would fix this problem.
>>Eventually theyll be required in all cars, old and new, and non-transmitting cars will be subjected to being pulled over by the police.<<
ALL cars are subject to random stop and search. The 4th Amendment died for autos a LOOONG time agi.
Absolutely right ... the cops will be equipped with an interface to their laptops that will connect to the OBD2 port on your car ,, gather evidence on the spot and charge you with multiple crimes... that 0.5 mph “almost” stop at an intersection , that 23mph in a 20 mph school zone .. etc. etc.
Once they have the mandate to have them installed. Then they can start mandating that they record more and more. GPS- For instance. So they can record everywhere you go.
Of course you are right. What I meant was, non-transmitting cars will be specifically targeted by police.
“Toilet monitors” reminds me of a great gag someone played at a place I worked years ago.
A couple of guys made up a very official looking memo, detailing the company’s new policy about restrooms rules and regulations. It was hysterical. I don’t remember many details, except that towards the end was information about how if the new automatic timers clocked you being in a stall for too long a camera would trigger, taking a picture of the person in violation.
The funniest thing was that nearly everyone believed it. I was fooled for the first couple of sentences, then I realized that what followed was against the law, then the further you read the more outrageous it got.
Those guys did a beautiful job on that thing. I couldn’t convince my co-workers that it was a gag, and one of them went storming in to the manager to complain about pictures being taken while she’s on the john. His response to the memo was priceless.
The MSM can’t get even the smallest details correct. It’s not “all cars”, it’s starting in 2015 for new cars.
I read an article somewhere about them. They’re the airbag computers, and they record your speed, and I don’t know what else. Testimony has been given in court on some accidents as to the speed that the car was going when the airbag deployed. I think they’ve been around since the 1990’s.
1676 page bill , get it here ==> http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-112s1813es/pdf/BILLS-112s1813es.pdf see section 31406 ,, section 31405 mandates pushbutton ignition stop/start ... starts on page 1066
The government has been making people buy things they don’t want for a long time. Seat belts come to mind.
1984 just got closer - hey liberals where is your vaunted rigt to privacy? No doubt they will exempt Government vehicles.
I would love to see a cottage industry consisting of refurbishing cars to eliminate electronics and replace with traditional mechanical olcontrol systems to make them maintainable by ordinary folks.
In fact I wonder how much of the electrical system could be eliminated - manual start, manual transmission, no radio, no AC.
Manual (crank) start could lead to broken arms (though you could rely on push starts). Hard to solve the drive-at-night problem though.
>>Of course you are right. What I meant was, non-transmitting cars will be specifically targeted by police.<<
I can see that coming, yes.
That’s when I mount a belt-fed .50 on my hood with 360-degree spherical articulation. Bring it on, tough guys. Best hope you don’t catch me...
If someone really, really doesn’t like it, I’m sure some ace mechanic will find a way to disable the thing. Illegal?...probably, but who gives a $hit?
A mileage tax. Nothing more.
I bet some type of GPS tracking will be incorporated into this system so Big Brother knows our whereabouts. It’s all about safety you see and the government would never access this data without your consent. (sarcasm) Orwell’s 1984 has arrived.
“Its not all cars, its starting in 2015 for new cars.”
That would be all new cars then!
Especially considering none of the boxes are black. Just another case of government stereotyping. Somebody should sue.
In my city, they charge you for the amount of rainwater that goes into the sewers.
Mandate away....
Opens a new opportunity to “jailbreak” said black boxes. It will be jailbroken before it hits the showroom floor.
“The of course there are malfunctions common to every device on a modern automobile.”
They could actually wire them so if not operating the car will not start. But whatever, there would be ways to bypass them.
The Toilet Safety Administration (TSA) has been predicted here:

Our company has a new wellness plan, they take your biometrics (blood tests) and you have to fill out an online health assessment or pay 20% more for your health insurance. You also have to agree to participate in the programs that they deem necessary. (i.e. weight loss, smoking cessation, etc).
Obviously the information you give them is on a database forever.
Between the Auto black box, taxes, health information and the information idiots post on facebook, etc. Governments and companies will literally know everything about you.
Were heading towards a brave new world very fast now.
Maybe there will be an underground industry that would sell transmitters to comply with the cop but give out false data.
I think the only way to avoid it, would be to replace most of the electronics in the car, which is normally impractical.
Nissan’s GTR has a nanny box already. Nissan can choose not to honor the warranty on the car if you tamper with it, and it is checked religiously at every car service.
The box checks things like RSA signature on security devices, engine control firmware and settings tables, ABS firmware, airbag, etc.
As far as I know, the only way around the thing at this point, is to ditch the stock electronics.
The thing even knows if the chips were modded, then replaced with the original firmware for service.
It also records abusive driving, such as high RPM shifting, etc.
I love Nissan vehicles, but I would not set foot in a GTR unless I was so wealthy I could have it fixed without warranty without really caring about the expenditure.
BTW, they can also tell if the box was removed from the car and swapped with a stand in -— two ways, the car won’t run anyway if the stock ECM is in place, and the box itself will detect the inconsistency once it is re-established in the car’s system for the return to the service dept. (this is easy to do using sequence codes and RSA hashes).
“Someone at Fox needs to watch Schoolhouse Rock to learn the difference between a Senate Bill and a law”
They are all nothing more than highly overpaid Monday morning quarterbacks.
None of them could do anything they report on. At best they are gossip merchants with a communist agenda.
It is the same problem we have with most politicians who are lawyers and think the solution to everything in life is a law or regulation.
Maybe someday we will have enough people who did not go to public schools and their Marxist indoctrination and we will start voting for anyone except lawyers.
The GOP will pass it of course
