Putin’s got the goods on Obama for sure, must be some heavy skeleton’s in Barkys closet. That and the fact Russkies hate blacks. Yup, they gave him the ‘’space’’ he asked for and now Putin’s gonna show Barky how the international game is played. How will China react?

Once again, the confluence of Georgia, Armenia and Iran, caught in the grip of Russia. This happened before.

A novel. Reads in a snap. Sheherazad meets TE Lawrence in the middle of the build up of the Light Brigade.

Russia has wanted to control Iran for several hundred years.

Putin detests 0bama for many reasons. They’re using him but they can’t stand him.

The big problem is the Russians have all of ONE frigate in the Caspian Sea.

As GeronL indicated, I should have read the page 2 of the original article. The point is moot since the article does not claim that Russia is going to invade Iran.

But with regard to the limited number of warships, they aren't very much needed there. Caspian Sea is a large, often shallow lake, and it is slowly drying up. On the other hand, other countries don't have much there either, for same reasons.

Troops could be delivered on commercial ships (which are available) and sufficiently protected with air power or smaller armed boats. Don't underestimate the bandwidth of a few barges loaded with stuff.

But, as I said, the article writer believes that Putin wants to fight Georgia. Perhaps geopolitically he might want to do that, and nobody is going to ask inconvenient questions in the aftermath of attack on Iran. Israel will be probably hit by Iranian missiles, maybe to the point that this becomes a question of survival of Israel. With the obvious response by Israel.

On the other hand, Saakashvili is not a threat, currently, to Russia or other neighboring countries. He is just an annoyance. His army took losses in the previous encounter and haven't recovered yet. Georgian opposition is striving to kick Saakashvili out. Neighbors of Georgia (all of them!) hate Georgia. He has lots of problems to take care of. Putin may want to just wait until Saakashvili falls on his own.

Maybe Russia is using Iran as an excuse to take over Georgia when Iran is attacked.

I wonder if Obama has has made a deal with Putin stabbing Georgia in the back.

The question for Obama is ... whose fault is it this time?

The main battle tanks are the key. That is why they secured the main tunnel through the Caucasus the last time they invaded Georgia. They can roll over Georgia anytime they want now.

“I mean, what was Bush II thinking?”

The way I see it W wimped out for three reasons:
He was afraid of a preemptive military strike being labeled ‘cowboy diplomacy’ by the Washington Press Corp,

His intelligence stabbed him in the back by leading him to believe Iran is 20+ years away from an atomic weapon, and

the party bosses strongly advised W to leave the dirty work for another president, lest he be responsible for oil going to $300/bbl.

So Russia’s idea is to attack Geogia and Armenia to save Iran from Israel?

I remember when the Russians invaded Georgia a few years back, the Russian troops all looked old, bald, and seriously out of shape, some of them looked like they had been pickled by vodka.

Thanks for that. One thing is certain: Dubya did America no favors with that. I mean, when we went into Iraq and Afghanistan I assumed it was to surround Iran. As it is, we had them surrounded, a big army and navy there, world opinion on our side for a while at least, and Iran without all those fancy new weapons they’ve been importing from the Chicoms. Wasn’t taking out Iran the whole point of the exercise? I guess not. Shows you what I know. Nada.

>>>>>>>>The Russkies must have good intelligence from Tel Aviv, as Tel Aviv has from Moscow. Lotsa Rusian Jews in Israel, lotsa Jews in Mother Russia.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

An idea Russia may be involved in any direct hostilities against Israel is plain stupid.

In is impossible since about 1992.

There is a powerful Jewish lobby in Moscow affecting desicion making, let alone about a third of Israel’s population speaks Russian as a second language (Even more than that in Israel’s armed forces).

Jews makes a majority of Russian elites, people of Russian descent makes a conservative core of Israel’s population.

Every Russian airport capable to serve a passenger airliner has regular flights to Israel, often as a single international route served by an airport.

They won’t rise arms against each other.

I remember when the Russians invaded Georgia a few years back, the Russian troops all looked old, bald, and seriously out of shape, some of them looked like they had been pickled by vodka.

That was because they weren’t Russian soldiers - they were paid mercinaries (basically militarized thugs) which Russia often uses for its more brutal and public mil ops.
