New curbs on voter registration could hurt Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New state laws designed to fight voter fraud could reduce the number of Americans signing up to vote in this year's presidential election by hundreds of thousands, a potential problem for President Barack Obama's re-election bid.

Voting laws passed by Republican-led legislatures in a dozen states during the past year have sharply restricted voter-registration drives that typically target young, low-income, African-American and Hispanic voters - groups that have backed the Democratic president by wide margins.

A further 16 states are considering bills that would end voter registration on election days, impose a range of limits on groups that register voters and make it more difficult for people to sign up, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School.

The new laws - many of which include measures requiring voters to show a photo ID at the polls - could carve into Obama's potential support in Florida, Ohio and a few other politically divided states likely to be crucial in the November 6 election, analysts say.

The analysts note that massive registration drives in 2008 helped put millions of people aged 18 to 29 on voting rolls, and that age group - which makes up roughly one-quarter of the U.S. electorate - helped propel Obama to victory, voting 2-to-1 for him.

Rock the Vote, a nationwide organization that mobilizes young voters, said the new laws would make it more difficult for the group to educate people on how to sign up to vote.

"The types of laws have varied, but state by state they've added up to the fact that it's going to be harder for young people to get registered and vote in this election cycle," said Heather Smith, president of Rock the Vote.

If you have to be educated on how to sign up to vote, then you’re not intelliigent enough to be voting.

An informed and legitimate electorate is the cornerstone to a free society. Anything else jeopardizes the whole concept of self-government. Election fraud is worse than treason, and those who excuse it should be deported to some banana republic.

Period.

Requiring proof of citizenship to register and photo ID to vote will hurt Obama and all democrats, it will seriously limit illegal alien votes and dead people voting.

The Democrats are famous for voter registration and
get-out-the-vote drives. Why don’t they have a let’s-get-
everyone-a-photo-ID drive? Let me answer that. It’s
because one person, one vote is not their goal.

I’m missing altogether how “hard” it is to register to vote. You go to the appointed place (preferably 30 or more days before the election), show your ID (photo or otherwise), and you’re registered. Voter card to follow. If they’re too stupid to figure that out, they’re too stupid to vote.

I guess I’m not understanding how it will be “harder” to get people registered. Is it that you now can’t get a second registration card saying you are “Mickey Mouse”?

If you can’t fill out your own registration card (unless of course you don’t have hands or something), then you shouldn’t be voting anyway.

Please - with all the money Obama and the ‘rats are raking in and especially with all the potential union manpower available, it should be no problem for dems to mount registration campaigns in every ghetto, illegal alien den and college campus in the country - they’re just mad that the flow of taxpayer money support their drives is being choked off a bit......

These laws have a disparate impact on Americans who want to vote more than once on the same day. Since most of them are Democrats, it is a racist plot.

In the “good old days” we had to register and prove who we are. If that’s to much to ask of voters today, stay home and don’t vote! You do not deserve to be counted!

Don't "young, low-income, African-American and Hispanic voters" find it insulting that the DNC thinks they're incapable of figuring out how to register and how to vote?

No kidding! Just had my lunch ruined watching the GSA Scandal Hearings on CSPAN! We don’t have enough jails to house the crooks in Government and that goes for both Parties! Here’s a flash, the CFO of the GSA has none of the Regional CFOs reporting to her. I guess she just sits in her office playing Willie records and does maintenance on her vibrator!
