Struggling Obama super-PAC asks Clinton for help
By Cameron Joseph - 04/21/12 10:15 AM ET
Priorities USA, a super-PAC focused on reelecting President Obama, has asked former President Bill Clinton to help them pick up the pace on fundraising.
Democratic donors have been resistant to giving to the group. This is partly because of liberals' hesitation about super-PACs in general and partly because Sean Sweeney and Bill Burton, the two former White House staffers heading the group, aren't as plugged in to the fundraising world as those helping some of the Republican groups, which include heavy-hitters like Karl Rove and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R).
If Clinton decides to help Piorities USA that could go a long way toward wooing some rich donors off the sidelines. According to Businessweek, he's leaning towards aiding them.
The group, which is headed by former Obama White House staffers, has struggled to keep pace with pro-GOP outside groups. It has raised $8.8 million with $5 million in the bank, according to new reports, while the pro-Romney Restore Our Future has brought in $51.9 million and still has $6.5 million left after an expensive primary.
The pro-Republican American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS have raised nearly $100 million and plan to spend a total of $250 million on this election. If Priorities USA and other pro-Democratic super-PACs can't pick up the fundraising pace Democrats and their allies could be vastly outspent by their opposite groups this year.
This article makes it sound like the Dems are panicking.
They are panicking. They may be raising 30 or 40 million, but they are spending much of it just keeping it all together.
The real good news is that the Dems reached their high point a couple years ago and they’ve tapped all the big donors already.
It’s all small donations from here on.
There are a couple of observations here:
First, about two weeks ago...I watched an interview where they were talking about the expenditures of the Obama camp. The strategy in 2008 was spend big early, then coast along (assuming that McCain really didn’t have a strong vote). The people in charge are the same group from 2008, and one would suspect they are using the exact same strategy. If they have maxed out at this point on big-name contribution folks....they will be broke by late summer.
Second, if Clinton knows that Hillary is the likely replacement on the ticket for VP....he’ll help. If he knows this isn’t the case...I doubt that he really wants to help. Based on recent health comments in the news...I’m not even sure if he’d appreciate traveling around and making appearances anyway.
Third and final, I think whoever is in the running for VP...has to drag along a fair number of contributors. So there might be some games going on. The President may not have many choices about who to select for the position. This character is hoping that he can get the big push in 2016 by being the VP for four years of Obama....so coughing up the contribution folks...may be worth the money.
4 more years of Obama is a disgusting thought!
But but but the Washington Post just ran a story about how everything is just fine with Obama’s fund raising. Gee I don’t understand - the WaPo wouldn’t lie or mislead would it?
Wouldn't surprise me if they figure a way to accept the Bridge Cards for donations..................
What would be the optimal time for Joe to have a ‘disabling stoke’.
