Romney gaining conservatives' support, if not their hearts
Washington Post ^ | apr 19, 2012 | Rosalind S. Helderman and Sandhya Somashekhar

Mitt Romney was not his first choice for president, but conservative political activist Scott Magill has come to accept that Romney is now his only choice. So Magill is looking for reasons to get jazzed about the candidate he once dismissed.

His list so far: Romney is a Republican who would sign into law legislation passed by a GOP-led House. Romney has started to hit the right talking points. If elected, Romney would have to listen to the conservative base - or risk its wrath at reelection time.

Also, and perhaps most important, Romney is not Barack Obama.

The conservative base appears to be warming to Romney, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll conducted after Santorum's exit, which found that about 80 percent of conservative Republicans hold favorable views of Romney - a record percentage for the candidate.

Santorum's withdrawal from the field has opened the door for many groups that had been uncomfortable with his candidacy to embrace Romney, including the National Right to Life; the Susan B. Anthony List; National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex marriage.

Any one of those three is a deal breaker as far as I’m concerned- and he’s done all three. That, for me, outweighs anything he or his supporters could say in his defense.

“Wrapping themselves up in some delusional “rational” that Romney is not a conservative”

If you have information -other than the above article from the ComPost- that the rest of us haven’t yet seen that supports this assertion...please post links accordingly.

Otherwise...IMHO...you’re as much a part of the problem

the GOP doesn't want the Responsibility

Why should they? They're still getting rich which seems to be the real reason most of them are in office anyway.

Many of us did not support Romney because of his record.

Many of us did not support either Newt or Rick because of their records.

Neither of these two could last the distance to win the nomination.

You can’t keep fighting the primaries into November.

I AM NOT a ‘ROMNEY SUPPORTER’. I AM AN ‘OBAMA OPPONENT’.

I WANT TO SEE OBAMA DEFEATED!!!

This was a rare once in a generation opportunity to replace Carter II with Reagan II. Instead we're getting Nixon II.

Here we go again. Another shill posting another bs pro-romney article. Here's the deal... I'm a "conservative" and as such most of my friends and family are "conservatives" and NONE OF US are in any way supporting romney. Here on FR there are thousands of "conservatives", I mean REAL "conservatives", not you wanna be conservatives of convenience (aka RINOs) and not ONE of the Conservatives I know of on this forum, or any of the others I frequent, support romney. We know we may as well be supporting obomba if we supported romney.

There is NO DIFFERENCE between obomba and romney and despite the leftist propaganda in the msm he's NOT garnering conservative support.

“Wrapping themselves up in some delusional “rational” that Romney is not a conservative...”

Are abortion, gun control, gay marriage and government mandated health insurance Conservative stances or not? Pretty simple question...

Some of us wont eat a liberal’s $hit sandwich just because they put an ‘R’ after their name.

You can eat my share of that, have a double!

Nixon the Quaker taught daddy Romney how to run for President, and that's how we got Willard the Mormon.

Romney WILL lose, and that is the plan.

Based on your tag line, it is certainly your plan.

When faced with a hard choice, an adult will make the best choice, a spoiled brat will take his ball, scream no fair, and go home.

Realists know that another term for obama will be far more damaging to the United States of America, than we can withstand.

If you hate the things that mittens has or has not done, why help obama to get re-elected?

It amazes me how many obama supporters there are on Free Republic! Wrapping themselves up in some delusional “rational” that Romney is not a conservative and that he is a liberal. Sounds like the brainwashing of the democrat party is alive and well here!

I suspect Jim has less tolerance for Obama lovers than he does Mitt lovers like you.

Your the delusional one when it comes to Romney being conservative. I don’t care about his stump speeches. I care about his actions.

His actions show me he is slightly to the right of Obama but still on the LEFT side of the spectrum.

My choice for president comes down to two socialist liberals or a third party. I could always vote NOTA.

Simply because I won’t vote FOR Romney does not mean I am voting for Obama. While the out come may be an Obama win because people like me won’t sell out and vote for Romney you can NOT blame that on me. You can blame that on the GOP-e for selecting a candidate that does NOTHING for me.

Then you should have voted for Newt. Trying to make yourself feel better by trying to talk the rest of us into jumping on your bandwagon isn't going to fly. Newt supporters voted for and will vote for him primarily because of his "record". The fact that you don't like his record says a lot about who you are and why you're supporting the rino romney.

Just sayin.

Touche!

Yes, the Republicans have sold their soul's to become members of the Apparatchik Class. Government is an easy way to get rich, sponge off the people, and never have any blame or responsibility for it.

Well.....at least until they bring about their Lexington or Fort Sumter moment and we are forced to do something about it.

Nice chart. Thanks for posting this. Newt’s the last remaining Conservative Jedi in this battle for our very Republic.

An open field for '16 is a better scenario than RINO/Socialist lock for the rest of my life.
