Iran says copying US drone, reveals 'codes'
AFP - ^ | 22 April 2012

Posted on 04/22/2012 7:21:40 AM PDT by george76

An Iranian military commander on Sunday said the Islamic republic is building a copy of a US spy drone captured in December 2011 and revealed what he said were "codes" gleaned from the unmanned aircraft.

"I am giving you four codes so the Americans understand just how far we have gone in penetrating the drone's secrets," General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, the head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospatial division, told state television.

...

Hajizadeh did not give further details, saying: "This aircraft is a national treasure for us, and I cannot divulge information about it."

But he added Iran has "started producing a copy of the RQ-170 drone," stressing it used the same US technology in stealth fighters and bombers.

...defense secretary, Leon Panetta, voiced skepticism over how much technological knowledge Tehran could gain from the aircraft.

Whew! I was about to get worried. Thanks for the reassurance "defense secretary, Leon Panetta!"

Here are the 4 codes (don't tell anyone):

Tire Pressure 30 psi.
Press here to open access door.
Use JP4 av-gas only.
Stand clear of exhaust.

Simply genius!

Ah, yes, the old "secret code trick". Actually that's the one that tells the drone to LAND IN IRAN.

Then, when the Iranians think they've got it all down and they have nuclear warheads mounted on the drones, they'll all LAND IN IRAN.

We saw this played out in Star Gate several times.

***Thanks be to obama!****

I an reminded of an old made for tv movie back around 1969. DAUGHTER OF THE MIND. about a scientist who is haunted and manipulated into giving the Russians secret nuclear info.

I feel Obama is giving our enemies our secrets “accidentally” on purpose.

Why was this drone not rigged with an explosive charge to destroy it if it fell into foreign hands?

Any “codes”(if there were any) they would have gotten from that thing were probably useless as soon as it hit the ground.(I’d hope)

Why was this drone not rigged with an explosive charge to destroy it if it fell into foreign hands?

Because someone decided that rigging a surveillance drone with explosives was too dangerous to be worth any possible benefit. I agree. Iran is not getting any value from this drone, except public relations and very limited information about its capabilities and limitations. The Iranian defense industry is a hobby shop. They cannot make landing gear for the conventional aircraft they have. Without foreign imports their defense industry would collapse.

If I can wipe my lost Windows phone from any PC anywhere in the world, I would hope the US defense department could do the same and more.

Dang it...Did the Iranians get the code to watch movies on the Cable? Now we are going to owe a bunch of money next month. But seriously if they do have any info it is because Comrade Obama gave it to them on purpose no accident involved!

I feel Obama is giving our enemies our secrets “accidentally” on purpose.

Klinton got in bed with the Chinese and Obama is turning tricks for Russia and the islamists. Bad enough he has brought an even lower class to the WH than the Klintons did, but now he is the embodiment of Sandra Fluke and her associates that can't function without enough birth control to ensure the planet depopulates. Reminds me of an old study in the '60s to "study" how many orgasms a woman could have. One case depicted a woman who had sex with 100 guys, one after the other. They described her as "tired but happy". Obama's a$$ must be getting tired by now, but it is surely making him happy.

This whole story is very strange.

The drones don't usually contain any data on board. They relay the data home via satellites as it is gathered. The Iranians have made claims of retrieving surveillance data...this sounds like a bogus claim.

To protect sensitive systems against falling into enemy hands self-destruct tech is usually employed. I have heard the excuse that the weight of such systems was too much and the drone would have been limited by this weight. This is incomprehensible, sensitive chips can contain their own destruction ability from a thin wafer that is over the IC silicon inside it's plastic or ceramic case. Why was this tech not used? or was it used and not activated? Why the ridiculous weight explanation for no self destruct ability?

If the Iranians have the electronics from the drone powered up then unless they are working in a Faraday cage we still have the ability to communicate with the devices.... so exactly what is going on here?? For a long time it has been possible to add an RF transponder inside an IC package. This is no secret anymore. In fact there are 3 commercial systems that allow anyone to put a cheap version of this tech onto a circuit board of their own design. These commercial systems are contained in a tiny package that you solder to the board. Your board can then transmit and receive data anywhere in the world. The poor-mans version of this satellite data setup is called the Spot system and costs a dime per 41 byte data transfer.

Here is the rather large board you have to add to a project to use the Spot system

Of course the more expensive commercial systems have much smaller electronics packages. The government systems would be incredibly small and low-power since they have access to the very large dish antennas on the NRO satellites <350'> and don't have to rely on the low-orbit sats the commercial systems do.

Here is a link to an article on Hack-A-Day about the Spot system and a how-to guide for the hobbyist.

Yes. They are very advanced. The four codes they have gleaned are “off,” “on,” “standby,” and “would you like fries with that?”

You have a lot of hope. I have very little confidence in the people running our intelligence program. Why didn’t that aircraft have some type of self-destruct or something that would prevent it from freaking landing in enemy territory????

At the very least, it should have taken a full power 20,000 foot nose dive into the hardest surface it could detect.

That is true.

The software is threaded in such a way that deconstructing or copying would result in a complete meltdown of the source code.
