The ranking member of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee said on CNN this morning that there’s extra concern for President Obama’s safety seeing as how he’s around people with “guns strapped on their legs.”
Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) spoke with Candy Crowley on “State of the Union” about the Secret Service scandal. Cummings and Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) sent a letter to Secret Service director Mark J. Sullivan last week asking for a full accounting of the events and a history past disciplinary trouble with agents’ behavior abroad.
“It bothers me a lot because I know that there are a lot of folks who are perhaps looking for opportunities to do harm to the president or others that the Secret Service, you know, guard,” Cummings said. “And you never know what they think that is a moment of weakness.”
He was asked if he has more concerns for President Obama’s safety because he’s African-American.
“First of all, let me say I have concern about all presidents and everybody that the Secret Service guards,” Cummings said. “But the fact is that African-American people have always expressed concern to me about this president. They see, Candy, folk around this president with guns strapped on their legs. And they say, you know, how can that be?”
“And they’re just — they worry,” he added.
The congressman said he thinks the Cartagena incident was limited to the 11 relieved from duty, “but we’ll find out.”
“So, you know, you can’t, you know, legislate people not being stupid, but certainly you can uphold the high standards of this organization,” Cummings said. “Keep in mind, the Secret Service has been around since 1865, and we’re going to make sure that it remains the great organization that it is.”

Yeah, that’s what it sounded like to me too. That is some seriously bad, dangerous stuff to throw out there. I think Cummings should be officially questioned on the House floor about his comments.

I’ve watched that video three times now. Cummings is claiming black people tell him that they are worried that Secret Service agents are armed with guns in the presence of Obama.
There’s just no other way to interpret it.

Good point. There's no way Cummings would have made these remarks without White House co-ordination. Crowley was probably fed the question that set up Cummings response.

So, what is he saying, here, that he believes the Secret Service to be more of an assassination threat itself than a means of protection from it?
Only two conclusions can be drawn, either he wants the Secret Service disarmed, or he wants them replaced with individuals whose loyalty he does not suspect, meaning black individuals.
That’s odd, because the only really vivid public threat made against Obama that I’m aware came from Jesse Jackson, who wanted to castrate him. A more vague one came just last week, from Louis Farrakhan, darkly hinting about people killing their leaders.
Does this Cummings person even have a clue himself, as to just what he meant? I suspect not.

This particular event in Columbia suggests that they can no longer be trusted with that job ~ so a detailed investigation must be made. After all a guy who can't be trusted to keep his britches on long enough to do his job 24/7 can't be trusted.
Frankly I don't care if the Secret Service ends up with nothing but karate masters ~ we cannot have them bringing hookers into the rooms the government rents for them to sleep.
NOTE: last Fall during the "Occupy Wallstreet" Leftist insurgency one of them got close enough to the White House with a rifle to take some shots at the windows. That was ANOTHER Secret Service failure.

So voting a black man into office elevated his victim status? But not voting him into office would have elevated his victim status,too? So regardless of whether he wins (and then they imply white people, including his security detail want to hurt him) or loses (implying that Americans can’t stand to see a black man succeed) in 2012, it elevates his victim status. And his ‘tenure’ as a retired president will be constantly evaluated (insinuating that white people want to hurt him or his legacy)for ‘further’ signs of ‘institutional racism’.
Apparently all you’d have to do is scan the local golf course or junk food joint to see him.

My question was about whether Cummings was referring to Secret Service agents, or other people. It seems clear that he was in fact talking about the SS. He should be grilled about this on the House floor, and anywhere else possible.
