Public employee unions had everything lined up.
Their nemesis, Gov. Scott Walker, was facing an unprecedented recall election. Their hand-picked candidate, former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, came out of the blocks running. Their front group was set to spend millions to help push Falk over the top.
So what went wrong?
Wisconsin for Falk, a coalition of labor groups, has spent an estimated $3 million on statewide TV ads and multiple slick fliers touting Falk's candidacy - all without seeing her gain traction against the Democratic front-runner, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett.
The most recent public and private polls show Barrett with a double-digit lead.
Then Wisconsin for Falk took the most unexpected step in the race so far.
In the middle of last week - with the primary just over two weeks away - the group went dark. It had no TV spots running anywhere in the state for days, just as talk spread of dissension in the labor community.
To top it off, Walker then said on a Milwaukee radio show what many Democrats and Republicans have concluded: Falk is clearly the weaker of the two top Democrats.
"The unions totally underestimated Barrett in this race," said Brian Nemoir, a Republican political consultant not involved in the recall election. "I've seen nothing that bodes well for Falk or her supporters."

Is there a chance Barrett can win? And what’s Barretts views on the Unions in Wisconsin?
As I understand from afar, the unionistas dislike/hate Mayor Barrett because he did much the same thing as Governor Walker in curbing union power/contracts in Milwaukee. Now will they support him or fold their tents? And in the June election ( less than 2 months) can Barrett overcome the reality that he has done the same thing for which this recall election was predicated?
Well that’s interesting.
FYI..fascinating stuff
I am a former Wisconsinite and from my understanding, other than in Milwaukeee, Barrett is not liked at all. I don't think the union thugs will recall Walker, he is the second best governor in the U.S., behind only Mitch Daniels of Indiana. (Indiana is sending $50.00 tax credits to all taxpayers because we hAVE A BALANCED BUDGET AND A SURPLUS) How's your state doing???
You need to post that in the comments section at jsonline because the Union supporters are running amok lying about Walker.
I'm mostly happy with Christie, no property increase last year for the 1st time in I don't know how long, a small increase projected this year.
Wisconsin Falk campaign re-grouping ping
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
Willing to bet that the word to turn off the Falk labor ads came straight from the White House and Obama himself. Scott Walker would have beaten Falk with one hand tied behind his back!!! Obama knows that if Walker wins the recall election in June, Obama is toast in Wisconsin. So....the word went out to throw Falk under the bus and let Barrett take his chance against Scott Walker. Problem for Obama, the Dems and the union thugs and goons is that Walker will handily defeat Barrett. The leftist crazies and public union thugs & goons have done a number on themselves. Any Wisconsin voter that votes Democrat, labor or Obama is the sharpest knife in the drawer, by a long shot.
Anyone planning on voting for Kathleen in the primary?
I think the Dems have put up a fake candidate against Scott, so we are confined to sticking with Scott and cannot go do mischief in the Dem Primary. Don’t ask me who this fake candidate is. I haven’t heard.
Barrett is Union all the way, except that he used Walker’s game plan to avoid teacher lay offs in Milwaukee. He also entered the race against Walker late so the Unions had already committed to Falk.
