Republican Insiders Have A Favorite For Veep: Senator Rob Portman
Buzz Feed ^ | April 21, 2012 | Zeke Miller

There is no doubt in the minds of Republican National Committee members that Mitt Romney will be their standard bearer in the fall, and already consensus is building behind one potential vice presidential nominee — Ohio Sen. Rob Portman.

In an informal survey of more than half of the Republican State Chairmen and national committee people at this weekend’s State Chairman meeting at a resort here, two-thirds said they believe Portman is the most-likely and best-qualified running-mate for Mitt Romney. The committee members spoke to BuzzFeed only on the condition of anonymity.

“He’s from Ohio, and we need to win Ohio, it’s that simple,” said one state chair.

Portman, a former Congressman from the Cincinnati area who was director of the Office of Management and Budget during the George W. Bush administration, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. And the warmth Republican elites express for him stems much from a desire to avoid another risky, flamboyant pick like Sarah Palin as it does for his ability to help carry an important swing state.

“Romney needs to make a safe pick, and keep talking about the economy — and that’s Rob Portman,” said one committeewoman from the West.

Rob Portman is an OK running mate to a poor nominee. I have nothing in particular against Portman, but he isn’t an exciting or inspiring nominee, either. The only possible drawback would be his work in the Bush Administration.

Right, Portman is just the kind of guy we need to be in government, but he lacks the clown appeal the masses feed upon.

Ramming that down our throats day in and day out. The fix has been in since 2008.

“Romney needs to make a safe pick, and keep talking about the economy — and that’s Rob Portman,”

Yep. The country is headed over the falls morally and financially - plus of course, the whole Constitution.
So they push RINOmney. He (appears) to be winning based on a lame campaign, combined with huge spending on negative ads toward conservative
candidates.

Now when it comes time to name a VP, the establishment wants him to go the safe route...

And people are chomping at the bit to pretend RINOmney is conservative. They are pretending the country is no where near the falls.

... but Romney will get those deck chairs all aligned.

I don’t want to knock Rob Portman. I’m glad that he is on our side. But, as an ardent Rick Santorum supporter, I still wouldn’t vote for Romney even if he were to pick Rick as his VP.

Well, if nothing else, the one useful thing to come out of 2012 will be a data point showing that when the GOP runs a RINO VP candidate with a RINO Pres candidate, they lose even worse than when they run a RINO Pres with a conservative VP candidate.

This is typical Karl Rove micro managing left brain small minded thinking. Work a key precinct here or there and damned having any kind of big attractive message. These folks are idiots.

Rob Portman is a zero on the excitement factor, giving us two zero’s on the ticket.

the establishment wants him to go the safe route.

Safe for them. They control the house and will take control of the senate if Barky wins reelection. They would lose both if a Republican won. The presidency has become a puppet role and they don't particularly care to have it.

Rep. Portman Named Next U.S. Trade Representative

By Paul Blustein
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, March 18, 2005; Page E02

President Bush yesterday named Rep. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), a free-trade advocate who is well-regarded by lawmakers in both parties, as his choice for U.S. trade representative.

Where’s the guy with the Not This Crap Again picture. The country needs job creators not job exporters.

Yes, Portman is OK, but not as conservative as Rick Santorum, but I don’t think Romney is wise enough to pick Rick.

Most importantly, Santorum would be the BEST person to take over the country, if Romney became sick, or something.

In fact, Santorum would be better than Romney anyway, but unfortunately Romney will be the candidate.
