Yahoo ^

Barring any weekend surprises, it looks like Wildrose leader Danielle Smith will be Alberta's next premier. Several polls have come out over the past 72 hours putting Smith's upstart Wildrose Alliance ahead of the governing Progressive Conservatives both in terms of popular vote and seat distribution in the provincial election.

-excerpt-

Regionally, according to the Abacus poll, the Wildrose Party has a commanding lead in Calgary with 44 per cent support followed by the PCs at 29 per cent, the Liberals at 13 per cent, and the NDP at 12 per cent. In Edmonton, the PCs continue to lead with 36 per cent, followed by Wildrose at 29 per cent, the Liberals at 17 per cent, and the NDP at 16 per cent. And, outside of the two major cities, the Wildrose Party has a commanding 25-point lead over the PCs.

The PC’s are going to get a well deserved thumping tomorrow.

They had so much government revenue and they still couldn’t manage to avoid any deficits.

I just hope the Wildrose will do better.

The PC Party also decided to regulate private conversations at home by banning homeschoolers from condemning homosexuality as a sin.

That alone should get them booted.

How did they run up those deficits?

Alberta should be awash in royalties right now, with oil prices and production up.

What exactly is a “Progressive Conservative”? Seems like a non sequitur to me.

You mean an oxymoron, like "military intelligence."

Exactly.

I’m still trying to figure out how it went from a 7 billion dollar surplus to a 4 billion dollar deficit within a year.

Uhmmm...they spent the $11 billion dollars?

Obviously.

But that kind of between a projected budget and real budget shouldn’t happen. That’s like telling me the estimated car repair is 1200 bucks, but than submitting a 5,000 dollar bill on the same repair.

That sort of error shouldn’t happen.

A split personality title the old right wing party of Canada had. When the national party collapsed in the 1993 vote from a majority government with 169 seats down to just 2 it set in motion wheels of change. For the next decade the right split votes among 2 parties. The remains of the PCs and Reform which became the Canadian Alliance Party for the 2000 vote. They eventually saw the light and joined together to create the current Conservative Party which now has a majority and no Progressive name attached to it. The various provincial parties kept the old name in many cases since the national collapse didn’t affect them at the provincial level. Exactly how conservative Canadian conservatives are in comparison to US conservatives varies to say the least.

I voted Wildrose at the advance poll on Friday. Had to stand in line and they said 900 people had gone through the day before, which they seemed to think was impressive.

Advanced voting was something like 300% up this time from last, though last election was the lowest turnout ever.

If Redford gets in, Alberta will no longer be an island of comparative sanity in this crazy world.

cheers,
Jim

If the US has RINOs I would guess Canada has WINOs.

Not quite what those polls were predicting - results this morning show PCs at 62, Wildrose 17, Liberal 4, NDP 4.

Yes. It seems Albertans want to return to their vomit. Familiarity trumps reason.

Horrible news Ryle. Guy’s I don’t know if you were following this election.

If you haven’t been, the ruling Progressive Conservatives in Alberta have gone CINO under their last 2 leaders and a new Conservative Party was leading in the polls. But alas the polls were wrong and the PCs held on to a strong majority of seats. The Liberals mostly abandoned their own party to vote PC. The polls actually nailed the correct % of Liberal votes but were way off otherwise. The CINOs still won by 10 points and got over 2/3 of the seats even with 20% of people voting Liberal and Socialist. Federal Conservatives in Alberta are not happy.

Damn shame. ...And Alberta is supposed to be the sane province. At least Wildrose increased its number of seats.

Why would anyone be surprised that the left and the PC Party would team up against the real conservatives? The same thing happens in this country, how do you think Romney got the nomination? Why do we think nothing gets done in Congress?

WHy would you vote for a government that believes it has the right and power to regulate the content of a personal conversation in your own home??
