Romney Backs Student Loan Proposal Obama Supports By KASIE HUNT

ASTON, Pa. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday embraced a student loan proposal that President Barack Obama is selling on the campaign trail and refused to endorse Sen. Marco Rubio's conservative immigration plan aimed at helping young illegal immigrants.

The two policy positions signaled an effort by Romney to move to the political center as he works to court critical general election swing voters — including young voters and Hispanic voters — after a brutal primary fight.

"I think young voters in this country have to vote for me if they're really thinking of what's in the best interest of the country and what's in their personal best interest," Romney said as he stood next to Rubio, R-Fla.

Romney was campaigning in Pennsylvania a day before the state's primary — he doesn't have serious opposition now that Sen. Rick Santorum has dropped out of the race — and answered reporters' questions for the first time since effectively securing the GOP presidential nomination.

House Republicans oppose legislation to extend temporarily low-interest rates for student loans. Obama has been pushing Congress for the extension and planned a three-state tour this week to warn students of the potential financial catastrophe they will face if Congress fails to act.

Interest rates are set to double on July 1, from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent, on a popular federal loan for low- and middle-income undergraduates.

"I support extending the temporary relief on interest rates for students," Romney said Monday, a day before five states hold primaries, though he did not offer specifics on how the extension should be paid for or how long it should last. He said he supports the extension because of "extraordinarily poor conditions in the job market."

Sucks bad enough that I'll take my ball and go home. I won't support either liberal, should Romney win the primary (which he might not).

I pray for an open convention.

Here’s an idea for Milt. Send Rimshot Joe to the old folks home and run as Barry’s VP! Everyone would be happy!

"and answered reporters' questions for the first time since effectively securing the GOP presidential nomination."

? ? ? ? ?

(CBS News) -- Mitt Romney may be the Republican Party's presumptive nominee, but it will be a while before he actually has the delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Romney currently has 645 delegates, according to CBS News estimates. He now needs 499 more to reach 1144 - the number of delegates a candidate must have to be nominated.

I seem to recall something about eggs, baskets, chickens and hatching...

The go-pees might have a bit of a surprise coming.

Wonderful.

1. What happens to the price of bonds when the interest rate goes down?

2. What happened to the housing market with government-guaranteed, artificially-low interest rates?

3. What is happening to college costs with government-guaranteed, artificially-low interest rates?

So, let's fix it by doing more of the same?

Brilliant!

Let's all get on the something-for-nothing bandwagon! It might not collapse in my lifetime, or at least not for my time in office!

I am just amazed that Republicans want this pandering liberal boob to be their nominee. What a joke the GOP has become.

When it comes to the question of student loans we have a lot of folks out there who don't know what they're talking about.

First off these loans cannot be discharged through bankruptcy. They should receive the LOWEST POSSIBLE INTEREST RATE ~ not a higher rate.

Secondly, not all student loans are financed through the program that has the lower rates ~ which are still higher than rates for comparable nondischargeable debts!

Romney is grasping at a small piece of it to take the issue away from Obama, but the folks in Congress with their own proposal are just part of the crowd who made bankruptcy harder, and who voted for allowing banks to raise interest rates to 31% per annum if the loans were made through credit cards (and similar accounts).

Whatever it is they want you to believe they are pushing, that's not it. These guys are crooks. Romney is a crook. Obama is a crook. None of them can be trusted to provide accurate information concerning student loans.

Can’t we get Newt to Jim Henson his hand up Romney’s butt to keep him from undermining the entire conservative agenda before the election?

Romney’s favorabilty ratings are still very low and with stunts like this may sink even further. “According to a new ABC News-Washington Post survey, only 34 percent of Americans view Romney favorably (“the lowest for any leading presidential candidate in ABC/Post polls in primary seasons since 1984”). And 50 percent of Americans rate Romney unfavorably—that’s higher than any unfavorability score Obama has received ever.”
