Gingrich hints he may drop from race this week (No, he didn't)

Newt Gingrich hinted he may withdraw from the presidential race if he has a poor showing in the Delaware primary Tuesday –

"I think we need to take a deep look at what we are doing...We will be in North Carolina tomorrow night and we will look and see what the results are."

"This has been a good opportunity for us, we have been here seeing a lot of people,” Gingrich said. “We have got really positive responses and I would hope we would do well here – either carry it or come very, very close."

..."Romney is clearly the frontrunner but that doesn't mean he is inevitable. It is very dangerous for frontrunners to start behaving like they are inevitable because the voters might decide that’s not so true. Frankly, I think it is a mistake for Romney to kick-off his general election campaign tomorrow in New Hampshire. He has about half the votes he needs to be nominated."

Speculation remains high that Gingrich will exit the GOP race this week, especially he rescheduled his trip to North Carolina several times.

Gingrich's future hinges on Delaware

The Speaker heads to North Carolina tomorrow for a tour of the Billy Graham Library. The campaign also added an "election night rally" in the Charlotte area, which Gingrich has not held since late February.

As Gingrich remains in the race, his Secret Service detail remains alongside him. As questions are raised about the cost to taxpayers while the Speaker continues campaigning with an entourage of agents, Gingrich says he sees no problem with it and finds it "goofy" that people question if he should get rid of the detail.

"I mean, I am a candidate. We have exactly what we are legally...

Typical. Contrary to the headline, anyone who reads the article will conclude just the opposite- that Newt does not intend to drop out.

Newt’s had to fly under the radar for the last month. But, tomorrow night, he’s scheduled a kick-off event in NC. I hope it means that he expects to win Delaware- and that he’s back in open opposition to Romney in NC.

His Pac has squirreled away $6M- and wouldn’t be surprised if the Adelsons don’t pop for another $5M in April– so long as Newt has a chance.

Next month could be the most fun we Newsters have had since January.

They keep hoping he’ll drop out.

I keep hoping he won’t.

Speaking of Delaware, I think he may have a fairly decent chance of winning it. While the state as a whole is pretty Blue, the rank-and-file Republicans are pretty conservative. They’re the same folks who nominated Christine O’Donnell over Mike Castle. Hopefully, the breakdown of RINOs to conservatives will be about the same tomorrow, and give Newt a much needed win!

I asked this on another thread, but that one died before anyone replied to me.

When Santorum started to win several states, calls for Newt to withdraw were rebutted on the ground that if he did that, Romney would surely get to the magic number before Tampa. As it is now, Santorum has suspended his campaign. Wouldn’t the same logic, Romney would get the nomination sooner than Tampa since some of the supporters of the withdrawn candidate would go to him, apply here?

To the extent that I understand your question- yes- it would have been better for both Rick and Newt to have continued to double team Romney.

Yes, Romney split the conservative vote— but viable candidacies from Rick and Newt would have split Romney’s money.

Neither Rick or Newt could compete with Romney one on one New- they had to act in concert

Thanks for the reply. Now we just have to wait how big the migration from Santorum to Romney is. Tomorrow we might get the answer.

The lamestream media is constantly translating what Newt says into stuff he didn’t say. Newt has said over and over that he is in it all the way to Tampa. Period. He is tatooing on Brian Williams’ forehead right now.

Prediction- Romney gets most of Rick’s vote- for now.

If Newt can draw it out into May- I think that changes.

Brian Williams should be forced to get a NEWT ALL THE WAY TO TAMPA tatoo on his forehead for reporting another false story.

Well this may be why Santorum’s held out his delegates....had he given them to Newt it would have moved him along and certainly given the media heads up....but Romneys doing so many nasty dirty backstreet deals, and I will add Santorums in it with him, that the whole thing worse than stinks.

Newt said he will reassess after DE, and before NC. What candidate wouldn't reassess after a primary day, like tomorrow.. and how does that get translated to hinting at dropping out... what if his reassessment portends that he is stronger now than he's been in awhile... In other words, no one knows...

Newt is tired, we are all tired. But this has been going on since Friday, first DE, NC and a friend of mine told me the rumor mill in TX is going crazy that he HAS already dropped out. it tells me Romney's crowd is worried and Newt isn't going away like they thought he would... They did the same thing to him in Nevada, remember?

Trust Newt. We have trusted him this far, we can going forth.

Santorum is still trying to divide the conservative vote. He is doing a lot of stealth stuff in PA, urging his supporters to vote for him there, and other places. And he is teaming up with Beck to get a christian conservatives movement going, to work down ticket, and vote for Romney, under the guise of working against Obama. I think he will put off endorsing Romney as long as he can.

What an opportunity he has missed, to deny his ego, get over his holier-than-thou self-righteous superiority, and do the right thing for his country.

Here's the cute thing: If Newt keeps doing well, the more Romney/GOP will press for Santorum to endorse Romney. And when Santorum does that, he is finished. And his supporters still supporting him against Romney will likely flock to Newt, as the santorum romneybots are already there. He is playing this cute little game, and believing his moment won't come. It will, and everybody will know what he's made of...

Santorum’s doings need some exposure. I haven’t a clue, but to be sure, it’s all about whatever advantages Rick, as he ingratiates himself with the cabal in DC as he has thru’ out his career, this time by pandering to the religious Right on behalf of the liberal. He wants on that ticket at all costs.
