Utah’s Love looking to be first black Republican woman in House
The Washington Times ^ | 23 Apr 2012 | Valerie Richardson

Sooner or later, a black Republican woman was bound to run for Congress. It’s just that nobody expected her to hail from Utah.

Mia Love won the GOP nomination for the 4th Congressional District race Saturday at the Utah Republican Convention, scoring a major upset after wowing the crowd with a roof-raising speech at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy.

The daughter of Haitian immigrants, Mrs. Love took 70.4 percent of the delegate vote, well in excess of the 60 percent required to avoid a primary runoff under Utah’s unique rules. She defeated former state legislator Carl Wimmer, who had been viewed as the heavy favorite. He mustered only 29.6 percent of the vote.

If Mrs. Love, 37, defeats her Democratic opponent, Rep. Jim Matheson, she will become the first black Republican woman to serve in the House.

“She really gave a great speech. She gave an enthusiastic and well-delivered speech,” said Tim Chambless, associate professor of political science at the University of Utah. “And I think there’s a desire to send a message to the rest of the country that Utah is not all white males.” The mayor of Saratoga Springs, Mrs. Love also may have benefited from a convention backlash spurred by state Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, a Wimmer supporter. Before the final vote, Mr. Shurtleff urged delegates to back a candidate with “a proven record who can beat Jim Matheson this fall. Not a novelty.”

Some delegates booed his remark, and Mr. Shurtleff later issued a tearful apology, saying he inadvertently made a “terrible choice of words.” He said he had meant to imply that Mrs. Love was new to the process.

I take it you listened to Mayor Love’s speeches and found her to be an unqualified candidate who asked people to vote for her because of her race? No? Then how the hell can you make such an insulting statement about a principled conservative Republican? Mayor Love is not the one calling attention to her race—check out the by-line on the article that was posted. Sure, she said that she would work to dismantle the Congressional Black Caucus, but what do you want her to do, refuse to answer questions so as to avoid thoughtless people from calling her a “racist”?

And since you prefer to assume that a 100% conservative, self-made woman *must be* a racist since she didn’t wear a burkha (sp?) to hide jer blackness, it seems to me that it is you, not Mayor Love, who is judging people because of their race.

You’re correct, lots of black Republican women have run for Congress; in fact, quite s few have actually won the GOP nomination before (McGlowan couldn’t get that far), including one (Teresa Doggett) who came relatively close to winning. The author, who apparently isn’t very smart, must have meant that if (God willing, when) Mia Love is elected she’ll be the first black Republican woman in congressional history.

I listened to her speech on Saturday.

Just one more Romney Republican.

No thanks.

And she deserves to be one. She is a phenomenal speaker and was a great mayor in Saratoga Springs.

“What are you talking about? She is not talking about race.”

Hildy, you gotta watch old sten. The internet service in his double wide isn’t first rate. They there’s his wife ( I mean his first cousin), so cut him some slack you can see he has “personal problems.”

Utah Republicans have shown the rest of the country the way, and this will be no exception. They will have a trifecta if they just put old Orrin out to pasture alongside Bob Bennett and elect this woman to Matheson’s seat.

if her qualifications were strong, she would not bring up the concept of race

Tell me where she did that.

“Will the Congressional Black Caucus welcome her if she wins?”

With Allen West, and others, we can take over this caucus from the rats! Won’t happen tomorrow, or next year, but it can be done.

On all fronts, defeat the socialist entity known as the Democrat Party. To restore America we need to wrest the reins of government from the Socialist Party (Democrats.)That task begins today. I won’t live long enough to see it’s completion. We need to start today!

Yes, running against Cohen in TN-09. Unfortunately, it’s an overwhelmingly Dem CD and she lost big.

Which race, she looks to be about 3/4ths white. In Brazil she might be considered white, especially if from Bahia.

Again: When did Mrs. Love bring up her race? You still have not provided one instance of her doing so.

You’re not suggesting she wrote the article’s headline, are you?
