Don Stenberg is a tried-and-true conservative.
He's also a tried and failed conservative when it comes to federal elections. He is 0-3 in U.S. Senate races.
If a fourth time's the charm, and Nebraska voters send Stenberg to the Senate, what they see is what they would get: a hardworking, hard-core conservative ideologue who won't compromise on his small government, anti-abortion, pro-gun agenda.
Stenberg has built that reputation over his career in state government and as a private-practice attorney. The former Nebraska attorney general and current state treasurer hangs his hat on that record in this, his fourth bid for the U.S. Senate.
Stenberg is indisputably what his campaign slogan says he is: a genuine, lifelong conservative. That is why three influential national political committees — the Club for Growth, the Senate Conservatives Fund and FreedomWorks — are spending money on him, despite fundraising numbers and polls that show him significantly trailing current Attorney General Jon Bruning.
The Club for Growth recently began running ads that criticize Bruning using some of the themes Stenberg employs to try to pull people away from the front-runner and into his camp.
"The guy (Stenberg) has just blocked and tackled and been a model citizen," said Doug Wilwerding, an Omaha businessman who donated to Bruning and considered Fischer before backing Stenberg. "Maybe some people find that boring. I find that reassuring. We probably need more model citizens (in elected office). We have enough entertainment."

Don Stenberg is a conservative on the whole range of issues. His best-known opponent, Jon Bruning, has liberal writings in his past and has become wealthy while holding public office.
If this guy is a conservative, why don’t good people of Nebraska vote him in?
He has won election as state Attorney General and state Treasurer, but lost some Federal elections. In at least one primary, he was heavily outspent.
Twice he lost a primary to high spending millionaire douchebags, one of whom, RINO Chuck Hagel, won.
He won the nomination in 2000 but lost narrowly to Ben Nelson.
He’s more conservative than Bruining so I hope he wins the primary. I’d worry about him running against a viable opponent but the general election this time is a layup.
