Strong border controls and a lack of jobs prompt mass emigration of illegal Mexicans from the U.S.

The number of Mexican immigrants living illegally in the U.S. has dropped significantly for the first time in decades, showing a dramatic shift as many illegal workers are moving back to Mexico from the U.S. because there are so few job opportunities.

The new analysis comes amid renewed debate over U.S. immigration policy as the Supreme Court hears arguments this week on Arizona's tough immigration law.

Mexican immigrants make account for nearly 60 per cent of the illegal immigrant population in the U.S. and last year there were 6.1million in America. That number was down from its peak in 2007 when there were 7million confirmed in the U.S.

That drop was the biggest one in modern history, with the Pew Hispanic Center noting it was believed to only be surpassed in scale by losses in the Mexican-born U.S. population during the Great Depression

Much of the drop in illegal immigrants is due to the persistently weak U.S. economy, which has shrunk construction and service-sector jobs attractive to Mexican workers following the housing bust.

In addition, increased deportations, heightened U.S. patrols and violence along the border also have played a role, as well as demographic changes, such as Mexico's declining birth rate.

"actually, Mexico’s 6 1/2% economic growth rate, as opposed to the Obama Depression, is really what is driving this."

Economic climate combined with SB1070 (and more on the way) is really what's driving this.

Well, actually Southern California is in the midst of an upsurge in the illegals fleeing Arizona because of it’s clamp down on illegals.

Someone forgot to inform the illegals here in Texas. They’re still multiplying where I’m at.

Mexico because if one sneaks into Mexico you get three options.
1.Jail

Call me skeptical. Where else can illegals get HUD housing, WIC, etc..? I certainly don’t see a decrease of any sorts where I live.

Same here...I don't buy this Barbara Streisand...Why would anyone go back to that toilet??? Even with a tight job market here, it beats living in a third world country in a civil war with the drug cartels.

I smell propaganda here.

I don’t think exiting a country to which you illegally immigrated is called emigration.-

The headline should read, "Mexicans Return to Home Country."

Too bad we were distributing the armaments to the cartel death squads that got so vicious. I don’t see how it is POSSIBLE to keep the people so confused about who’s in the right and who’s in the wrong.

“I smell propaganda..”

Of course. See how well Obama has done with illegal immigration? It has decreased. I don’t buy the 7 million (I think it is 30-40 million) and I don’t buy that they are packing up their stuff and leaving. Nope...

Funny you should ask that, I have heard if illegals have been living here for a while they do have to report to their consulate and fill out paperwork. Not sure if they are actually doing it or if they can be denied? Thought it was funny when I heard it, seems they need permission to return, so to speak.
