Mitt Romney was firm and direct with the abortion rights advocates sitting in his office nine years ago, assuring the group that if elected Massachusetts governor, he would protect the states abortion laws.
Then, as the meeting drew to a close, the businessman offered an intriguing suggestion that he would rise to national prominence in the Republican Party as a victor in a liberal state and could use his influence to soften the GOPs hard-line opposition to abortion.
He would be a good voice in the party for their cause, and his moderation on the issue would be widely written about, he said, according to detailed notes taken by an officer of the group, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.
You need someone like me in Washington, several participants recalled Romney saying that day in September 2002, an apparent reference to his future ambitions.
Romney made similar assurances to activists for gay rights and the environment, according to people familiar with the discussions, both as a candidate for governor and then in the early days of his term.

He lived up to his word in Massachusetts.
Now we’re going to let him do the same at the national level.
Romney LIES -— and back stabs and the GOP LOVES HIM FOR IT.
How we permitted a stealth anti-abortionist into the republican nomination will be an easy analysis.
We participated with him in systematically knocking out each and every conservative candidate.
We were romney’s circular firing squad.
Not me, not you, not many unfortunately many Republicans falsely believed that Romney was/is a conservative, they completely ignored his words and record - just like many ignored BHO.
Romney is now and has always been as left wing as they come, and now we are stuck (apparently) with two candidates that are competing to see who can be more liberal than the other guy.
We have liberal R and liberal D, almost like Twiddle D and Twiddle R.
Pray for our republic. Our only choice is trading one evil for another.
I thought Friday was Make Up a Fact Day?
Rock the System....
Vote for the conservative in the race
I’m offering a prize to anyone who will boldly say:
Romney is a rock solid conservative!
Are you game?
I believe we have a romney-bot coming out of the closet.
Of course he isn’t but he’s not an inherently evil communist either.
But my uncle’s cousin’s mother in law’s brother’s wife’s son told me that Romney picked his nose and ate it!
Off with ‘is head!
Romney is a liberal. He’s a radical liberal.
If he flips any more on abortion they’re going to give him a drum and sell him as a toy at the circus.
Wake up, Peter. You’re better than this.
He is a liberal. He is like a machurian candidate.
How can anyone vote for this man and still call themselves a “conservative”??
Yes, he is a Manchurian liberal traitor in the midst of what used to be a quasi-conservative party.
Time to face the fact that the GOP has been taken over by the democrats. I saw leftist Doug Schoen fawning over Romney this morning and talking about how Romney can unite America.
I was at a website called “Conservatives Forum” and there ARE people there who insist Romney is a real conservative. lol.
For the primaries, don’t vote for him. But if, as seems likely, he will be the Republican nominee, I suggest that the way to vote for him as a conservative is to place your clothespin securely over your nose. Then keep firmly in mind that Romney likes America better than Obama does. Also, he likes American business better than Obama does. He likes working to support his family better than Obama does.
Kind of like George HW Bush vs. Michael Dukakis. Bush senior just wanted to be president because it filled out his resume nicely. He wasn’t terribly conservative and he didn’t have Reaganesque goals or principles to put forward. But he was better than Dukakis.
Also, if he is as malleable as everyone says, perhaps he can be influenced by whoever is yelling the loudest. In that case, we and the conservatives in Congress need to yell a lot.
This is not a great scenario. This just gets us a one-term, not terribly helpful Republican. But it is better than Obama.
That would be how a conservative could vote for him, I think. Here’s the bumper sticker for it:
ROMNEY 2012—
BEATS A POKE IN THE EYE WITH A SHARP STICK. MARGINALLY.
Peter, have you seen Jim Robinson’s checklist?
Romney isn’t just a liberal. He’s an ULTRA-Liberal
You know, after the backstabbing of Tea Party candidates by the GOP-E in 2010, you’re going to have to do a lot more than babble idiocy or make unsubstatiated claims that a fact is not a fact to win over the skeptics to the Establishment candidate.
The New World Order is alive and well. Pay to play or forget about you and what you want...peon nobody!

Great idea. Let's write widely about his moderation on this issue.
/johnny
Maybe he means as moderator of its acceptance into the american mainstream, because he sure as hell is advocating all gay all the time.
Anyone, and I mean anyone who would collude with NARAL, talking about how he would get the Republican Party’s position on abortion “softened” is “evil”.
He’s evil in the worst sense of the word, he’s a mole, a liar, a sociopath of the worst order.
This example should serve as one of the clearest examples of this piece of excrement’s motivation and desires.
Not voting for him, no way, no how. If he doesn’t outright destroy conservatism/Republican Party because of his “moderate” positions, he will have hastened our demise.
FUMR
I seriously am seeing very few discernible differences between Romney and Obama.
They`re two members of the same team.. just playing different positions.
Amen to that.
The lights are going out for the GOP. It`s a long, far cry from the heady days of the Reagan era.
Romney can drop dead for all I care.
I will never support or vote for the freaking leftwing socialist.
