Though the tea party wasnt particularly enthused about Mitt Romneys presidential candidacy during the primary, one tea party leader who was present at the inception of the movement says the tea party will get behind the former Massachusetts governor going into the general election.
Absolutely, the tea party can and will support Mitt Romney in the general election, and with great energy in the door-to-door ground game, said Michael Patrick Leahy, co-founder of The Nationwide Tea Party Coalition and author of the recently released book, Covenant of Liberty: The Ideological Origins of the Tea Party Movement.
Its important also to note that this is a strong sentiment at the local level among the 3,000-plus local tea parties.
Though on the core values, Mitt Romneys not as aligned with us as Michele Bachmann, hes far superior to Barack Obama, Leahy added.
Our job in the tea party movement is to cautiously but vigorously befriend Romney, while reserving the right to encourage him continuously to align more closely with our core values. This encouragement to align has already begun, and it will continue through and beyond election day.
Leahy also pushed back against the notion that the tea party is becoming increasingly irrelevant.
[T]he tea partys grassroots get-out-the-vote activities will be the deciding force of the 2012 presidential election, he contested.

Not a chance.
Romney, the Soros plant, is FOR TARP, RomneyCARE,
more taxes (called “fees”) and Sharia.
Who in the Tea Party is not?
And I will actively campaign against the liberal if he gets the nomination.
/johnny
Not this TEA partier.
That’s great . . . we are supposed to support a 100%, dyed in the wool, committed, homosexual loving, abortion supporting, health care mandating, non-Christian, stinking liberal Democrat!
We’ve come a long way from Dole/McLame/Bush haven’t we?
The title is misleading SOP fodder coming from RomBots.
I was not aware that Michele Bachmann was the gold standard of the Tea Party? She did not do much for me
Sorry you are irrelevant. You are accepting Romney terms. And anyway no one leads me!
MORE MEDIA BS TELLING US WHAT WE WILL DO AND WHO OUR CANDIDATE SHOULD BE
TODAY IS THE DAY
GO OUT AND VOTE FOR NEWT IN ALL TODAY’S PRIMARIESS!!! AND DRAG 10 PEOPLE WITH YOU
Your vote is worth 100 times more today than normal- because SO FEW PEOPLE vote in primaries.
If JUST freepers show up, we can assure a Gingrich win!
Last election, in my district FIVE PEOPLE showed up to vote, all day long. (not 5 percent, 5 people)
Each of us can scare up 5 people without even trying
I just called my mom and brothers and sisters and none of them were even planning to vote today - probably some of my neighbors too.
CALL EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!
He is definitely NOT a TEA Party member . . . not with those credentials. This guy can go to hell.
Not this TEA partier!
I have said it before and I'll continue to say it...
Romney is NOT a conservative.
Romney is NOT even a moderate.
Romney is a northeast liberal Democrat masquerading as a Republican.
Romney can ride in on the Tea Party’s coattails, instead of the other way around. Let Romney deal with a conservative house and a republican senate witn a significant conservative caucus. No liberal judges, no stupid treaties, etc.
Okay, that’s it! I’m voting for Obama, Pelosi, Reid and the other liberals. The Republicans really angered me now. Just to show them I’ll help re-elect Obama, by golly, and that’ll let them know how tough I am.
Our job in the tea party movement is to cautiously but vigorously befriend Romney, while reserving the right to encourage him continuously to align more closely with our core values. This encouragement to align has already begun, and it will continue through and beyond election day.
Vigorously befriend? What does that mean? He also goes on with some nonsense about "encouraging" Milt to align with us? Get real. He is already actively disassociating himself with the Right.
ATTENTION: ATTEMPTED CO-OP IN PROGRESS
Vote for Barak O’Romney? I don’t think so.
Tea Partiers are obviously RINO socialists...
TEA Party leader = oxymoron.
Who died and left this Jackass in charge of speaking for Tea Party members? Romney can pound liberal sand.
I wouldn’t count on it.
I won't vote for a liberal, regardless of party affiliation.
Since you romneybots have no legitimate argument, you try to belittle conservatives.
Like an abused spouse that says "It will be different this time", and the GOP knows that they can count on you to vote for whatever crap liberal they push. Sad.
Romney WILL lose.
/johnny
I've done absolutely all I can do to get a conservative nominated. I've sent out money until it hurts and put in countless hours on this computer.
I've even griped at other Freepers if I thought they were giving up in mid battle. I don't believe I could have done any more.
Now it looks like the only choice I can live with is to vote AGAINST Obama.
I have a 20 year old grandson in the Florida National Guard and Obama as commander in chief for four more years just scares the crap out of me. My kid deserves much better.
“The title is misleading SOP fodder coming from RomBots.”
Perzactly correct. So, what is the true intended function of this Nationwide Tea Party Coalition gambit?
Would you please ask your friends at the Tea Party Express what they think of this?
Did anyone else see lefty Doug Schoen on FOX this morning fawning over Mitty? Romney is a democrat and any “conservative” who votes for him can consider themselves to be democrats from here on out.
Lots of usurpers out there claiming to be leaders of the Tea Party.
Tea Party Nation
Tea Party Express
Tea Party.org
Tea Party Patriots
etc., etc.,
And the leaders of all these self appointed factions all claim to be THE leader of the Tea Party. And what if these various leaders have differing views on what’s constitutes Tea Party conservatism?
Looks like the unorganized Tea Party situation is primed to be taken over by left-wing infiltrators claiming to speak for the Tea Party movement.
Romney won a majority of tea party folks over Santorum during many of the primaries.
They realize that if Obama is re-elected that it means the end of the constitution, the end of this country.
He needs to be discredited, everywhere he shows up.

This guy got a mouse in his pocket? He might vote for Romney, but nobody I know will...
Newt will have my vote in June, if he stays in till then. After that, Romney will have my vote, if for no other reason than I dislike him less than I dislike Obama.
Nice try Jamie, but no sale.
For future reference, tea party folks are quite independent minded and a ‘leader’ is the last thing we want or need. Second, we want our country back and obama-lite ain’t gonna cut it.
I understand all of this is foreign to you, but try to take some time to read - and learn - some American history.
This so-called leader is speaking for himself, and no-one else.
All the Tea-Party Christians I know, will not be voting for Romney.
I’m making sure they know his record, and his record is enough to wave them off on a vote for this lying, left-wing, Progressive Liberal.
NO chance whatsoever.
That’s right. The tea party has got to TAKE OVER the pub party if it wants to have stronger influence over who gets in the sweepstakes to run for potus. It’s power politics. The gop-E wants a “moderate” who can appeal to “independents” who voted for that man last time. We say that strategy is ineffective. Until we have enough clout to force their hand, WE are irrelevant.
In other words, fight like hell but don’t take it personally.
It Romney gets the nod (which appears virtually certain) I will hold my nose and vote for him. I won’t like it but it beats Obama. Staying home would be the same as voting for Obama.
Romney is a democrat who makes John McCain look like a rock ribbed conservative.
You might also consider voting against O without voting for Willard, if that is the best choice the two-party system gives us.
My son convinced me that a vote for, say, the Constitution Party candidate will be recorded as a vote against both unacceptable party candidates and that is the statement I wish to make and for the elites to know.
About about as much chance of that as you taking over the Communist Party of China.
And my grandson will still have to serve under Barack Obama.
Rejecting the implied guilt.
I disagree. But you do whatever you feel is proper and I will do whatever I feel is right.
Anybody who claims to both support Romney and be a representative of the tea party movement is either confused or lying about one or the other.
