Many English language dictionaries disagree with your assessment and list “payed” as a verb: “A past tense and a past participle of pay”.
“However”, if it feels so good for you to point out others’ perceived shortcomings, carry on. Narcissists often do so. I hope my little reminder helps you in the future. :-)
