Newt Gingrich has been inching towards the door over the last couple of days, admitting that tonight’s Delaware primary is likely a make-or-break situation for his campaign. However, a new poll out today might give the former Speaker some pause.
Public Policy Polling shows that Mitt Romney leads in the state of Texas by a 45% to 35% margin, putting Gingrich within striking distance. Coming up lame in his home state, only 14% of GOP supporters support Ron Paul.
More encouraging for Gingrich, or troubling for Romney, is that the presumptive nominee is trailing the former Speaker 45% to 40% among Evangelicals, a major force in Southern Republican politics.
Gingrich also leads among Republicans under the age of 45.

And, with quisling Rubio in tow, Romney is etch-o-sketching his primary lies as to immigration.
Newt can have an excellent May adventure- if he can withstand the pressure to withdraw.

We in Texas are screwed again by the Kenyan imposter's Department of Injustice. Our primary is May 29 due to bungling by the State GOP party apparatus and Redistricting Federal Court battles instigated by the democraps and race mongers.

Me, too. Support Romney? If he wins the nomination, I may go there. But for now, the last thing I want is having to choose between Romney and Obama.
It is not irrelevant. Romney losing the largest Red State would be quite a thing, especially so going into the Convention. It would show weakness and an unwillingness by the Tea Party/Conservatives to roll over and play dead while we still have a voice.
It could quite literally be a last-second field goal that propels Newt to a nomination via a brokered convention.

You realize that this poll is nothing but bad news for Gingrich. I can’t believe someone blogged this and you posted it as if it were something good for Newt. PPP hasn’t polled Texas since January. In what may well be their final poll here, Willard is actually winning Texas by 10 points and winning the Tea Party vote in Texas by 44-38. Not long ago virtually no one thought Romney could even win a primary in Texas if he had any competition, and now he is beating Newt (who is supposed to be strongest in the South) here. Further, the last time this firm (Democratic firm PPP) polled Texas, Romney had 44/44 favorable/unfavorable - now his favorability is +43% at 66/23.
He is Obiwan Kenobi, our last hope. May The Force be with him.

This May 29 date was the result of actions by the damn Yellerdog Dems, not TexGOP.
Texas could save us from Romney. Those here who have given up need to cowboy up and fight like ell instead of trotting out the line of the MSM and GOPe. It sickens me to see how many who call themselves conservatives have thrown in the towel already. I say fight on with Newt until the convention.
Newt is to republican voters what Kay Bailey was - insider. She has retired...before a second defeat. I liked her she is good on foreign policy and many conservative ideas - but she is a big spender too.

At daybreak tomorrow, I’m gonna sit out on my porch with my .22 rifle and start pickin’ off crow for a very big FR bbq.
Now, I don’t yet know who all will be eatin’ ‘em, but one thing is certain, it’s gonna take a lot of crow to have enough to go around. ;>)
I’ve never eaten crow... I keep thinking that if they were any good to eat, you would be able to buy them at Safeway or Walmart. Heck, you might even need a special license to shoot ‘em.
When I was 10 years old, a neighbor boy, Hanky, told me that his dad made him shoot robins. Hanky said his family eat ‘em. Hanky had bright red hair, and because I had never before seen a redhead, I thought he was kinda weird anyway. I wonder if Hanky still eats robins and if he doesn’t, would he still have that bright red hair?
Well, if anyone would prefer I shoot a few robins, you should speak up now.

So basically, I was exactly correct and you have no real response at all.
Also, when Perry dropped out I supported Newt - until it became obvious he wasn't going to win or force some brokered/contested convention. I am politically savvy enough to know when a politician is BSing about their chances of winning a race, when they are really just having some fun and raising some cash to pay off debt, and when they are really not "in it to win it". Newt can't win the nomination now, he can't stop Willard, and I am sure Gingrich knows both of those things perfectly well. I'd have preferred him just be honest and say, "hey, my campaign is 4 million bucks in the hole and I'd appreciate any donations you can send my way, in the meantime I will keep trying to get the message out for a little while longer".

What happens if Romney doesn't get to 1,144 delegates?
I read PPP’s spin on the numbers - which mirrors your take - and I disagree. Right now, the race has been declared “over” by everyone but a few bloggers, and voters have tended to follow suit, and resignedly threw their support to the establishment candidate, Romney.
And yet...a substantial minority of Republicans have refused to take orders from the elite, and have decided to vote their convictions, i.e., to vote for Newt. Granted, the close numbers in TX represent just a modest chance for Newt. He must win Delaware tonight, and win or “place” a close second in NC on May 8th. If that happens, Romney’s inevitability is again placed into question, and more voters will cast conviction votes for Newt, which should cause Gingrich to prevail in TX (a winner-take-all-delegates state.)
And then we’ll have a fun convention.
But all this is moot if Newt doesn’t win Delaware tonight.
In that case, I hope that the convention dumps Romney and picks someone else. My point is that it wouldn't make sense - or be fair - to pick someone who Romney already defeated.
I'm hoping for a strong compromise candidate. Don't ask me who...

No, Texas is NOT a winner take all state this election cycle. It's delegates are distributed proportionally. The Santorum camp was hoping that Texas could change to winner take all, but the RNC shot that down immediately. It was one of the reasons cited by the Santorum people for why he suspended his campaign.
But all this is moot if Newt doesn’t win Delaware tonight.
If Newt loses Delaware and tries to remain in the race he is really going to look foolish. Delaware is winner take all I believe, so Gigrich has to actually win to get the 17 delegates. A close second gets him nothing. I actually think Newt does have a chance to win Delaware, but I don't see how it will make any difference in the long run. Maybe it would just be nice to see him go out on a high note.

Well, whether Newt stays in the race or not, I’ll be voting for him here in TX, as long as he is on the ballot. Every freeper vote for Newt to hold Romney’s feet to the conservative fire. Unless somebody can give me a good reason not to.
I was banking on Texas being winner-take-all. And now I need something in the apartment with stronger proof than this red wine. Romney repulses me; he a human zero who wants power as an end in itself.
Guess conservatives should focus down-ticket; federal & state representatives - and governors - as a check against executive power, exercised by Obama or Romney.

I’m in Texas & I’m planning to vote for Newt if he can hold out til then. If not, I’ll vote for Ron Paul or leave it blank rather than vote for Mitt.
To my fellow Texans: have y’all got your voter id cards in the mail yet? I’m getting antsy for mine. For a while the harrisvotes website said they were delayed due to the redistricting, but it didn’t say that when I checked today.
The only reason you say that is because of 24/7 news has completely ignored Newt and Paul as an option and declared Romney the winner. And you fell for it. Too many like you believe that. If they were fair...fat chance of that happening...it would be at least flip-flop with Newt on top by 10. Only about 1/3 of the GOP electorate wants Romney...that means in the general only about 1/6 wants him...another 1/6 will vote straight ticket and GOP loses just like McCain cause no one wanted him either but got stuck with him because of people like you saying others like Rick, Paul, Rick P, Newt have no chance before the 3 largest states have even voted.
