LOUISVILLE, Ky. -
Louisville Metro Police said a teenager was shot by a homeowner in west Louisville during an attempted break-in.
The shooting happened just before 10 a.m. Monday in the 400 block 38th Street.
Police are investigating the shooting after the intruder was rushed into surgery at University Hospital. Police said he's expected to be OK.
Some homeowners sounded off on whether they thought the shooting was justified.
"I feel like he was justified for doing it, right, because he was trying to break in. It's his home, not nobody else's," said neighbor Lerenza Jones.
"I'm OK with it. He's not a violent guy. He works for the city. He's not a felon," said neighbor Sasha Sloan.
Police said the homeowner heard a loud crash and then noticed he had a broken window.
Police said it appeared the intruder made it only halfway through the window when he was shot in the arm.
"As one would expect, the homeowner is in distress. The homeowner is upset. The homeowner doesn't want to be in this position," said LMPD Detective Derrick Leachman.
Police said the man told them he fired in self-defense.
Neighbors said they've always known the homeowner to be a nice person. They said while the shooting concerns them, they are more worried about other potential burglars on their block.
"This should get the point out, its not a safe block to try to rob," said Sloan.
Lerenza Jones isn’t a White Hispanic!
“This should get the point out, its not a safe block to try to rob,” said Sloan.
It makes me feel safe to walk the unsafe street on this block! LOL!
