A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now its attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.
The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families land.
Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.

I was driving a tractor on the farm by the time I was five. Now I find that my grandparents, uncle and aunt, and others should have been hung. Who knew?
Is there a super-fund I should know about?
Am I due millions?
Will there be commercials with an 800 number soon?
God, it just never stops
You nailed it. This is Democratic fascist corporate welfare at its finest. And I use the classic definition of “fascist” in the Mussolini sense here—a state where the means of production are left in private hands, but the government controls everything through regulation.
4-H also does other things with kids... My daughter belongs to the 4-H shooters club, you know that would be the first part of 4-H to go bye-bye. She’s quite the little markswoman and really enjoys it.
It’s not a bill. It’s a “rule.” Propagated by the unelected un-Constitutional bureaucrats at the Labor Department, given the rule of law by some obscure Congressional bill from decades ago, probably passed by a lot of Congresscritters who couldn’t even imagine that it would be used this way.
This is what happens when you put a bunch of bureaucrats in power who think “food” comes from Archer Daniels Midland.
BINGO!! How many kids call Child Protective Services on their parents b/c they know it's basically against the law to spank? Kids nowadays would rather play vid games than even play outside.
No, they won't. They won't do that until they see grocery store like this...
Thanks. I totally agree with your description.
OTOH - maybe this will be the incentive I need to get my 13yo to help a little bit more on our “hobby” farm. She loves the idea of doing things obama and democrats don’t like!
Yep. It worked for the NAZIs in Germany, so the NAZIs in the U.S. figured it would work for them, too.
National Socialism (common short form Nazism, German: Nationalsozialismus) was the ideology and practice of the Nazi Party - for those who were never taught what NAZI means. You'd be surprised to find out how many people don't know the NAZIs were Socialist like the Democrat party today.
Teach people what NAZI means. They should know. That way they'll understand why Obomacare is so dangerous. Hitler, a socialist, did it, too! We ALL know how that ended.
Even then, I don’t think a lot of people will rebel. There’ a percentage who will say “sacrifice for the greater good”, and actually believe that garbage. People won’t rebel until they see their loved ones being taken away in the night. But a smart socialist/communist never lets it get that far. Even V. Lenin lightened up on the Communist rules when food shortages started.
Farmboy's 18th birthday:
Speaking of Vladimir - the U.S. celebrated his birthday on Sunday. The first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, was a celebration of his 100th. Isn’t it great to know Earth Day is really all about dear ole Vlad? And there we all thought it was just a celebration dedicated to recycling!
“Only not neatly divided on geographical lines.”
Then it’s time to start thinking “outside of the box”... or, perhaps, “outside of established geographical lines”....
And perhaps it’s time for conservatives to consider migrating to those areas where “new geographical lines” can be established — and defended...
thats what the drones flying around are for.
With Venezuelan Food Shortages, Some Blame Price Controls
Even with Chavez on death's doorstep, I don't see Venezuelans revolting, do you?
The existing lines are around virtually every urban area.
Any truth to the rumor that this bill has been named, Work For Wetbacks?
That was my first thought!
Every damn day there is more rules for us all to live by.
This is cruel, to farm families.
I would never obey this law!
>>>Unless the government plans to spend billions of dollars placing a full time inspector on every family farm in America its unenforceable anyway.<<<
Which is the goal, in my opinion. The idea is to create so many overlapping and unenforceable laws and rules that people are always looking over their shoulders, sort of a low-key version of the Great Terror. A secondary purpose is to give the state the ability to prosecute people when it chooses, perhaps in retribution, perhaps for show, and perhaps from sheer bureaucratic lack of coordination.
We’ve had a lot of practice in this regard concerning drug laws, especially marijuana, but there are plenty of other examples in our daily lives where the government makes regulations that it cannot or won’t enforce. Border protection is another example. Selling whole milk. Having a toilet that flushes more than 1.6 gallons. On and on.
In any case, this kind of bureaucratic rule-making has the impact of reducing the rule of law to mockery. God help us.
My mom would pack me a lunch then I'd walk down to the road at 6:30 a.m. and wait for the truck from the orchard to come by and pick me up. It was coming from town where it had picked up a bunch of other kids too and take us to the orchard.
We'd pick all day then the truck would drive us home. If I remember correctly, we only got about 75 cents per lug and depending how fast you could pick and steal cherries from the other kids' lugs, you'd get from 6 to ten lugs in a day.
Looking back on it, that was slave labor and I should have reported the farmer to the Department of Labor..........LOL!
My second is still in college. A member sitting at his lunch table was claiming he was a Socialist, and that it was a good thing. It was "fair". The Republicans had it all wrong. Well.....my son wasn't going to just sit there and let him get away with that or influence the other brains of mush sitting at the same table. He started naming socialist leaders throughout history and the consequences of their rein of terror. This kid had no idea Hitler was a Socialist, because he had no idea what NAZI meant. Neither did any of the other students at the table.
It all turned out well that day. Those who sat at the table were given a rude awakening. In fact, after my son went through socialism's history, and proved to them on his lap top the democrats socialized agenda (and communist links), the other students walked away in shock and horror over what was going on around them right under their young noses. They voted for Oboma. To this day, they apologize to everyone who asks them who they voted for, because they didn't know Oboma and the democrats were socialists (like Joseph Stalin) when they voted. Now, they're teaching their friends, too, not to make the same mistake they made.
There's hope out there for the college kids. You just have to get past all the liberal screaming. One good connection creates a chain reaction, so, I've sent my kids out on an educational mission.
***I worked on a chicken farm, 85,000 chickens, you shoveled food in at one end of the barn and shoveled the poop out at the other. ***
Been there, done that.
Also been there done that............with turkeys.
Sometimes I wish my kid would!
All kidding aside, I know exactly what you mean. however we also have to understand some kids don't live in great areas and come home to an empty house and aren't allowed to be outside.
My daughter has been home from school less than 10 minutes and is already changing her clothes to head outside. I "may" be able to get her inside in time to have something to eat before she heads for Youth Group!
That sounded like one of the military schools. The Citadel or VMI.
Pleased to make your acquaintance, Mr Hogwallop.
Your story reminds me of an older gentleman my daughter and I encountered when we were picking strawberries at a U-pick place a few years back. He was telling us (really her) about how when he was her age - she was about 8 at the time - he used to get picked up and taken to the strawberry field and was paid 10 cents a quart and would do it every day he could during strawberry season. It was fascinating listening to him, and also watching him - even though he was engrossed in his story he never missed a beat with picking berries. That was 5 or 6 years ago and that man was easily 80, if he were a day!
It’s fun to contemplate how long cities would last if rural areas cut off food shipments. Oh well, a man can dream.
The question is ...will Americans? Or more aptly...will ‘fly-over’ country?
Some of my cousins lost everything with the Pelosi river smaelt BS and now it looks like my last cousins farm will be in jeopardy( I won't say the city but near Hollister Ca) also the old farm( aunts) full of apples in Watsonville, so many farms will be hit. Heck they need a drivers license to run tractiors also!
They've ruined a brothers fishing business not long ago with salmon/crab, name it. He now works two jobs at a grocery store and had to sell his two boats that had been in the family since the 1920's. A half brother is homeless because of the logging/pulp mills( he has a degree in forestry).
We got paid in experience, in trade sometimes, sometimes cash but the stuff I learned on the farm and ranches was priceless. I can imagine family farms gutted finally, and the government parceling it out or taking over when no one in government knows how to raise cattle, or goats, or sheep or horses.
No one understands when or how to irrigate or when to plant or when/how to prune, or how to kill critters that eat your fruit or ruin your cattle. How would they even know what kind of hay or oats in drought or which areas to use at which times with free range? Oh gads, it'll just hurt so many more farmers and ranchers and the price of food will skyrocket. Co-ops will go under and all for what?
I can smell a nightmare and it smells like dead farms, dead cattle and brown rotted fruit, moldy alfalfa and dry as a bone farms and for what? People have been farming this way for thousands of years, and they think there's a more effective new way by giving their kids W-2 forms and a minimum wage? And what of welding and carpentry and electrical and fixing machinery insted of subcontracting? These skills are taught at an early age and will help in hard times.
These skills for young kids are invaluable and just owning/running a farm is such a feeling of pride, the indomitable spirit of America and American's...sorry this bad tangent, this bad writing but this is actually making me cry and it takes a lot for me to break. It's a damned tragedy all for _u_____ politics. _a___ them all to hell.
Back in 1962, we got put in the fields picking green beans. Hot and humidity almost killed us. We got a penny a pound for the work.
I made $5.00 one day! Thought I was in hog heaven! Then the weather turned dry and hotter. We picked the same amount of beans but I never made more than $2.50 a day after that. The buyer then upped the pay to a whole 1 1/2 cents lb.
The next year it was back to the bean fields. It was so hot my brother passed out in the fields.
Back in my youth, before Sam Walton broke the economic stranglehold the Chicken Men had on this country, I worked at what I could get. Shoveling chicken manure, hauling eggs, feeding chickens for growers who got sick.
Then I went to work in a chicken hatchery and hauled many a turkey egg to another hatchery miles away.
The Turkey growers often told me just how “dumb a turkey is, and the only thing dumber was a turkey grower!”
Sniped, and Facebooked. Your idea SHOULD go viral.
That's when I was 12 and doing the cherry picking. The income is about right, 6 - 8 lugs at 75 cents each - about 5 bucks.
Sorry about the beans, at least we could stand straight up and pick without having to bend over. Of course we were constantly yelled at for just picking the lower cherries and not climbing the ladders into the trees to get the higher ones.
For federal corporate individuals, officers and employees, pretty much. Which, you might notice, is a mere fraction of the American population of natural persons without corporate standing. Which means if the bulk of the American population would take a legal class and learn how they're being lied to, then virtually all of the tyranny being imposed upon them would literally vanish, as they realized it doesn't legally apply to them. And that way, without riots or any other disturbance, the Leftists would be comply broken and America would be returned to its genuine, original freedoms - which were actually there right in front of them all along, hidden by a vast government smoke screen of inapplicable administrative rules.
Well, that's good news, right? The country is saved, right? Yeah. Right.
:: crickets ::
So will illegals.
The point is not about being universally enforceable, it is a new tool for any LEO with an agenda. If they made breathing illegal it would be unenforceable too. Then, anyone can be arrested.
Hey you idiots who hate Mitt Romney and say he equals Obama. .... Do you think he would be doing this??? Wake up ya dopes!!!
The laws against child labor were exclusively part of the feminist cause. Susan B. Anthony and her friends pushed against young people being allowed to work with their fathers, after their fathers took custody in adulterous wife divorces. Feminism is one of the main prongs of the elitist effort to keep working class families from competing in business.
Republicans in Congress would vote along with Democrats against “child labor” again, if they could. Their ruling political regulator class bosses wouldn’t have it any other way.
Have fun. Enjoy the slide. It’s one of the consequences of popular, anti-family, anti-American policies.
People working on Collective Farms don't have to know anything much about farming. All they have to do is follow the 5 Year Plan and and meet the Commissar's quotas!
The Turkey growers often told me just how dumb a turkey is, and the only thing dumber was a turkey grower!
THey where not lying!
And what is the easiest way to control a population boys and girls, guns you say? Oh no, the answer is FOOD.
Put the family farms out of buisness and all that is left is the multi- billion agri-buisness corporations wholly controlled by the federal government.
Dr. Savage said a few years ago on his show that you won’t see revolution in this country until men and their children are hungry. I hope he’s right cause the government control of food is coming, folks.
From a family of berry pickers. Some for money, some for eating....Wonderful memories. My grandmother was the best. We picked strawberries, blackberries, blueberries...Told stories, laughed, ate till we were sick, and ate more.
Have my berry patches up and growing....along with an orchard of cherries, apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes.....The goodies are always worth the labor.
