I Hunt, but the N.R.A. Isn’t for Me [barf alert]
NYT ^ | 24 April 2012 | Lily Raff McCaulou

Posted on 04/25/2012 7:32:59 AM PDT by smokingfrog

EARLIER this month, Mitt Romney delivered a speech at the annual National Rifle Association convention, calling for a president “who will stand up for the rights of hunters, sportsmen and those seeking to protect their homes and their families,” presumably with guns. I’d like to remind Mr. Romney that those are distinct groups. Too often — especially during an election year — hunters and N.R.A. members are lumped together as one and the same.

I’m a hunter and a sportswoman. I own guns, but not for self-defense. I support gun control laws. I would happily vote to repeal the Stand Your Ground law in my home state of Oregon. In other words, the N.R.A. does not represent me.

Among gun owners, I’m hardly alone. The N.R.A. has just over four million members. That sounds like a lot until you consider that about one in five American adults own one or more guns. That’s nearly 50 million people. That means roughly 90 percent of gun owners do not belong to the N.R.A.

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that every N.R.A. member is also a hunter — which is highly unlikely, considering that the most comprehensive national survey of firearm ownership to date found that only 35 percent of gun-owning households say they hunt. Even then, the N.R.A. would represent only about one-third of all hunters in the United States.

"She is in extreme danger of being converted. I have seen it happen." If and when it does happens, she'll never get anything published in the NYTimes again.

You are correct. Of course, by then the NYTimes may be out of business and she might be able to get a gig with the new media.

I know what you're thinking, punk! Did I buy six rifles, or only five. Now you've got to ask yourself a question, "Do I feel lucky?". Well, do you, punk?"

I lost track of how many guns I own just prior to an unfortuante boating accident.

NYT finds some leftist dupe to bash NRA. Nothing new here. Plus we get some comments from the NRA bashers here. Nothing new there either.

Dunno why.

As a sometime member of the Cowboy action shooting clique, I don’t own a “black rifle” but I like the fact that others do. I keep thinking that someone needs to create an “Action Movie Shooting Society” that uses EBRs, high-capacity automatic shotguns, high-capacity automatic pistols, grenade simulators, etc.

The fact that I like lever action Winchester M1887 replica for my home defense gun, is just a personal choice.

Lily could benefit from taking Constitution 101 at her local community college.

The NRA is a single issue memberhips that supports those who are 2dA supporters, even some Democrats fall into that category.

That argument holds no water.

Dems who supported obamacare also support putting into place a system which will make guns a public health threat at some point in the future. You know it's coming.

If the NRA cannot see this simple fact, they are not getting a dime from me.

The Second Amendment ain’t about duck hunting.

The Second Amendment comes right after the First Amendment for a very good reason. You have the right to keep and bear arms because if the government tries to shoot you for shooting off your mouth, you have the right to shoot back with your own gun.

If along the way you can put venison, duck or turkey on the table, cool. If along the way you have to off a dangerous criminal who endangers your family, even cooler.

Righteously said, my fellow citizen. The primary two-legged target of an American's gun ain't a duck.

I’m hoping that everyone who reads this thread and my post understands, as do you, what my statement means.

It is important for us 2nd Amendment FReepers to understand that BoA is not our FRiend and they should quit BoA.

Further, we must encourage everyone who believes in the 2nd Amendment to join the NRA, JPfO, Neal Knox’ Firearms Coalition and the GOA.

If all pro-2A folks voted against Obongo Bozo and his LIEberal/Socialist/Marxist/Fascist gun grabbers, we just might save America in November!

Well, guess what lady, the 2nd Amendment ain't about hunting.

I don't hunt, so banning hunting wouldn't affect me in the least.

Hunting is a declining sport in this country any way.

Sales of hunting guns are down, even as gun sales hit record numbers. What people are buying are concealed carry pistols and assault rifles.

What's the female version of Elmer Fudd aka Ray Schoenke called?

I doubt this idiot has even read the "stand your ground laws" let alone understand what it is. As far as gun control goes, your guns are next. They are called sniper rifles.

why do these eastern liberal idiots always have to move into a west coast state and bring their stupid, corrupt, New York politics with them. It happened here in California about 40 or 45 years ago, it’s happening in Washington State right now and it looks like Oregon is next on the list. The process of subversion is very subtle. First you adopt the life style and aspect of your enemies; you need to camoflage yourself and blend in, only then can you strike from within and destroy your enemies. Like a parasite or a virus invading a new host.
If this idiot thinks the Second Amendment is about hunting and shooting sports she needs to go back and read the Federalist Papers and the debates that took place prior to the adoption of the Bill of Rights. Firearms were originally made for defense or aggression against our fellow human beings, hunting came as an afterthought. The Second Amendment just codifies our God given right to protect our liberty, our lives and our property from those who would take them from us by force or coercion. That includes normal street thugs and those who clothe themselves in authority.

Claptrap from some “I’m better than you are” idiot clearly out of touch with both constitutional issues relative to the Second Amendment and the most basic and simple nature of American politics.

She's from Oregon -- which is to say, Massachusetts + New York + Connecticut + Ohio warmed over. Kevin Phillips, as a teen, mapped out voting patterns in color, and his maps showed the big issues migrating east to west across the country. Oregonians are Yankees.

For an insight into the fervor of the bicoastal revulsion against real Americans, see this gem:

The plain language of this blog denunciation of Middle America really does reveal a fundamental bigotry that I have never heard either revealed or described in mainstream media. Now, I wonder why that is.

These guys will spend $6,000 on a fancy trap or skeet shotgun and not skip a heartbeat, but they question why anyone wants one of those EBRs or some kind of military-looking firearm. These guys should know better, but they have blinders on when it comes to firearms that are outside their small group of favorites.

No, this is in-group snobbery and snottiness. This is Business Roundtable types showing off their trophy guns, while reminding one another that, "one of these days, we're going to have to get around to taking them away from the rest of those yahoos, the hoi polloi."

The Pew Sociology Surveys (1999 and at intervals since) identified almost 20 years ago a group of nominally-Republican big shots, businessmen mostly, who are very, very weak on RKBA. Their "position" in society disposes them favorably toward depriving other people of their rights, especially RKBA. Pew researchers lingered over these guys, speculating (drooling) over the possibility that the grabbers might find unlooked-for allies (Iscariots) among this group who would give the confiscators key political help at the moment juste.

These guys are about as warm and friendly as a roomful of cobras and should be regarded as likely to turn on other gun owners in a showdown with, e.g., Barky and his thugs.

About the time of the Canadian grab, 12-13 years ago, one Canadian poster put up a lugubrious account of how a wobbly canoe cost him several good pump and autoloader shotguns and a couple of prized pistols, waaaaay out in the middle of Lake Winnepegosis.

Gee, that's tough. LOL!

A mob gargoyle tried that in Godfather II. Didn't work out too well against a well-plated 1911.
