On good-bye tour, Gingrich touts ability to be Romney surrogate
By NBC's Andrew Rafferty
MOORESVILLE, NC -- Even though his presidential campaign "will go bye-bye," Newt Gingrich on Thursday said he and his wife plan to campaign through the fall to help presumptive nominee Mitt Romney.
"I'm going to look at how I can be helpful, because I suspect people will still show up to hear me," Gingrich told voters at luncheon here. "Callista and I are going to campaign through October."
Though today, just 25 people attended the midday event here, leaving a roomful of empty chairs. Some of those seats were taken by Secret Service, an area the campaign has taken heat for recently because of the thousands of dollars the protection was costing taxpayers, even Gingrich he had become more of a sideshow than serious contender for the GOP nomination.
After losing the Deleware primary on Tuesday, the latest in a long string of electoral defeats, the former Speaker of the House acknowledged he will end his campaign next week. He will continue with his packed schedule through North Carolina, saying he felt an obligation to fulfill previous commitments here.
"The campaign will go bye-bye, but I'll be a citizen," Gingrich told a supporter asking about the candidate's future. "I've been an active citizen since I was 15."....

Very sad. God bless you, Newt.
I hope he doesn’t go out of his way to campaign for Romney.
I don’t think that’s necessary AT ALL.

I am curious who the first persons here are going to be to slam Newt for being a RINO loving backstabber, much like was said of all the other candidates who dropped out and backed Milt. Perry and Cain's recent endorsements and their corresponding threads on FR come to mind.

Agree. He has to support the nominee, but that only involves doing so much. Personally, I hope he doesn’t forget Romney’s vicious destruction of him.

To: brownsfan
Cain and Perry already have, Newt is in the process, and Santorum and Palin will also all soon endorse and campaign for Romney.
They will do so because they feel, though romney was certainly not their or our 1st, 2nd, or in many cases 3rd or 4th pic, he did win and will go head to head against Obama and that he is far better for the nation than Obama would be in a 2nd, lame-duck term.
My guess is that Romney will cross the actual number threshhold on the night of the Texas Primary, and that by that date all the major GOP players...both the establishment that we do not have much use for...and the conservative people whom we do...will be supporting and campaigning for Romney in the hopes that Obama can be defeated.
I wish we could have had a more conservative candidate...I still wish there could be a brokered convention to help that happen anyway...but short of an unbelievable gaff or real tragedy, it’s not going to happen and we will have to go and defeat Obama with what we have...and we will in any case have to work hard to make sure we have majorities in the House and the Senate to go along with it.

Right! Campaign for the U.S. House and Senate races.
It struck me last night, with Governor Perry's endorsement, that Romney desperately needs help in South. He came in third in my state (Mississippi) and also in Alabama.
I wouldn't be AT ALL surprised if he asks Governor Perry to run with him as his VP.
He needs a very popular, very attractive, experienced, Southern Christian running mate, and Governor Perry is also a military veteran.

Sarah Palin Already did say:
I am convinced that governor Romney, if he is our nominee and if he is elected president, he will know to surround himself with those that will inherently know to go right, to err on the side of smaller, smarter government and that gives me a lot of confidence.
I trust Sarah’s Judgement.

Slamming and bad mouthing Newt coming from a small minority of Freeper malcontents serves no useful purpose, gain or statement. Gringrich, Santorum, Palin, Perry, Cain, etc. did and will do what loyal Republicans always do. They back the candidate that comes out on top of their primaries. And....I have no doubt that all these good folks will do a terrific job in openly supporting Mitt Romney.
Get real, Freepers, it is what it is!!! And....to boot, this election is not about Mitt Romney. Most folks will be voting against Barack Hussein Obama, period!!! At the end of the day, it is quite simple, if you have any common sense or brains at all....it is.....”ANYBODY BUT OBAMA”. To do anything otherwise is pure insanity, IMHO. In reality, in objective review, Romney trumps Obama by any measurement you use.
But.....it is a free country, at least for today, so each individual should make their own personal choice relative their POTUS selection.

I really don't think Perry cares much for Romney, and I can't see Rick playing second fiddle to anyone other than Sarah Palin. He'd do it for her in a heartbeat.
Those two were my original Dream Ticket! :)

lol
there is zero chance of Romney picking Perry, Palin, Gingrich, Santorum, or Bachmann.
The only conservative he is likely to pick is Rubio, all the other contenders are a bunch of RINO’s like him.
Romney has been sticking it to conservatives the whole primary, don't expect him to suddenly embrace us. Mostly likely pick... a fellow Yankee RINO like... Chris Christie.

A bloody convention floor fight?
Seriously, I remain praying for Divine Intervention.
I think Romney ruined this primary for all of us. He robbed us from the primary we riched deserved with his vicious attack ads on his rivals early on, namely Newt Gingrich, who was determined to run a positive campaign of ideas and solutions for our very real problems. Our other conservative candidates were good with that, too, aside from Ron Paul, but I don't count the Libertarian.
I will never believe that our other candidates would have ever stooped to Romney's level and now he expects party unity. His rivals are grand men for burying their respective hatchets.

Speaking as a Haley Barbour supporter, I’ve been depressed for a very long time. Now we just need to pack the Congress with as many conservatives and Tea Party people as possible to hold Romney to his primary promises. All will be well if we don’t walk away. Democrats NEVER give up the fight.

That is hilarious. Rove pushed this loser on us with all his might and all he has to show for it is this awful electoral map.
If you add the solids and leaners for each candidate together and you get:
Obummer 284
Milt 172
Then if you take every single toss up and give it to Milt, you get this
Obummer 284
Milt 254
He still is a loser and it is all squarely on Karl Roves lap. Rove is working for Milt by many reports and this is his mess.
