Axelrod and his pals are playing a breathtakingly stupid game with the “dog wars” and this anecdote will in fact change voters’ perceptions if/when it enters wider media circulation. Romney 2012: Because “dog” plus “water” does not equal “stew.”
Oh, almost forgot. He and his sons saved a bunch of people too during this same incident.

In the Seamus incident, sounds like Mitt was more stupid than cruel. “Hey, all dogs like to hang their faces in the wind!” Good grief, at least Seamus lived. Obama ate pooch.
While his actions were bad, his intentions were not. I can imagine a number of folks assuming that their dog would be okay on the roof of a car, since they love to stick their faces out into the wind. He gets a pass with me on this one.
And I’ll give Obama a pass also, since I know other cultures eat things we don’t. But Romney beats Obama in this particular ‘conflict’.
And he just jeopardized the cat votes he was going to get from coast to coast.

I’ve spent my whole life having the misfortune of getting stuck behind some idiot whose dog is bouncing around unrestrained in the back of a pickup truck.
Couple years ago, one of those idiots got t-boned running a stop sign.
He’s fine but they never did find his dog who’d been thrown out of the truck bed and onto to blacktop.
Was it fine and just took off?
Was it internally injured and laid around in a ditch for days, dying in agony?
No one knows.
The ignoramuses who let their dogs hang their heads out of open car windows are just as guilty, IMO.
Airborne debris, gravel, wind induced corneal ulceration and abrasion.
A blind dog just because the owner was too dense to say “no” to the dog ‘liking to hang their face in the wind”.
A four year old kid would probably love to stand on the car hood and “fly” but a [theoretically] more intelligent parent wouldn’t -let- them.
I don’t see a lot of intentional cruelty out here in Hillbilly Heaven but I *do see a lot of spectacular stupidity.

Think about this from an Alinksy playbook perspective;
Most people love dogs.
Would you rather face ridicule for being so blindingly stupid you hauled a dog on the car roof or for being so “foreign/alien/freakish” that you *ate* dogs and then bragged about it in a book?
Obeyme’s people played on the figurative visceral reaction of Mitt’s Setter so it makes perfect sense to play on the literal visceral reaction to Obeyme’s supper.
I imagine this falls under Saul’s “fight fire with fire/ridicule” section.
I hate to tell people this, but animals travel on the outside of vehicles all the time.

A dog would willingly poke its head into the wind even when that was hurting its eyes?
I’ve seen spectacles for dogs. They look cool but it’s hard to figure out how they keep it on the dog. The dog doesn’t perceive it as something to be kept on.
I know about windborne stuff. One morning after I had been riding my harley with a helmet on, my ear felt so stuffed up that I went to the doctor. Lo and behold, when the nurse washed it out, there was a postage stamp piece of paper towel with a pattern I didn’t recognize. It must have whipped in under the edge of the helmet and burrowed into my ear.
Mark Steyn addresses this issue. The other "exploding cigar" is the Dems attacking Romney over ancestor polygamy. Steyn's column is both hilarious and informing in how to respond to this nonsense from the Dems.
The damage is not immediate and there is no pain while it’s happening so the dog really isn’t aware of it.
That comes later when the cornea is dried out and begins to ulcerate.
When and if depends on the length/frequency of exposure and the dog’s particular ability to secrete sufficient tears to mitigate the dryness.
One of my girls has chronic dry eye and needs drops applied frequently.
She’s not even allowed to have a window cracked in the car.
You do *not* want to deal with corneal ulcers.
They are horrible, painful, hard to treat things which cost a *lot* of money to get under control again...*if* you can.
I have a pair of Doggles I tried to use on her during her ulceration episode but the long, thin shape of a Sighthound’s head and the design of Doggles isn’t a very good match.
They’d fit much better on a ‘blockier’ head.
The straps hold on them pretty well if they fit the dog’s skull, in general.
Unfortunately, they just slid off of her long, narrow head.

Hubby once had a very angry wasp get inside of his helmet.
I wear a leather skullcap under mine so even if a bee gets in there, it’s not going to be able to sting me through the leather.
I also wear a headband over my ears, mostly because too much cold wind makes my ears hurt but I guess there’s also the benefit of keeping things out of them....:)
Shout out to Vet Vet Doug: is this a common problem with pooches that loll their heads in the wind? Their eyes dry out and ulcerate? Would something like a petrolatum based ointment help head that off, short of keeping the dog from poking its head out into the wind?

5 minutes on Google could’ve gotten you *tons* of “professional advice” and no, sticking ointment in their eyes won’t help.
The sticky ointment could actually ‘catch’ larger pieces of dust and debris causing further damage.

Bottom line is, *if* you care about your dog, keep your dog’s head inside the car.
If you really need empiric evidence, ride a motorcycle with no windshield and no eye protection at 65mph for a little while.

Looks like pretty sorry shape and so? What’s adequate eye protection is a valid question to ask. Going naked and ill fitting Doggles aren’t. Some other things may be and who would know but veterinarians.
I have, with nothing but an open faced helmet (face visor flipped up or removed) and normal eyeglasses, which have a quarter inch or more space between my face and the lens.
Speaking of visor, why aren’t there any dog helmets with visors? Assuming the dog did not find it too annoying, it would look cool and help with the eyes, and the dog could safely do what it finds fun.
Some driver held a little terrier dog up to the driver’s window on his lap or shoulder so it could poke its head out like the big dogs?
Eye dangers aside, hope it was really well secured so it couldn’t leap out the window or get hanged on its leash, or make its way under the pedals. And as they always say, nothing should be between the steering wheel airbag and the driver.
It was cruel. Ask the dog. And leave those baby seals alone!

This was Mitt’s ignorance. It seems grossly out of character for him to be mean to the family dog on purpose with kids in tow. Ten tons of flak later, he has surely learned his lesson about dogs.
The dog eating story hits me as really odd because Muslims would never do that.

Good grief. I know you have a triple soft spot for pets. I wouldn’t want to endanger pets knowingly either, but I’d also look for new inventions or even try to create them. Not only head shape but size varies with the kind of dog. A goggle whose frame can be custom molded to a dog’s head (made out of Gumby like material) might be the only truly effective kind.
