Al Sharpton, Trayvon Martin family urge peace on 20th anniversary of L.A. race riots

To mark the 2oth anniversary of the deadly riots that engulfed Los Angeles following the 1992 Rodney King verdict, civil rights activist Al Sharpton and Trayvon Martin's parents are urging peace at events. Sharpton spoke to Yahoo News before he and Martin's family addressed a church on Thursday night.

"I think even though people are angry and as concerned as I am, we don't feel like we have no options," he says. "Unlike [with] Rodney King, there's defined leadership in Trayvon Martin's case who have said from the beginning we cannot have violence."

Yet Al Sharpton urged his buddy Holder to get the DoJ involved in investigating this as a so-called "hate crime", and they did.

With the real facts trickling out (all of which evidence anything but a "hate crime"), fat Albert is getting scared and trying to put this thing in reverse - too late. There is a civil suit with a big price tag heading his way which might just bankrupt him and his quasi-federal NAN organization.

You're all missing the key reasons for this. Racial tensions are being inflamed around the country by racial motivated radical blacks...as well as the usual thugs..we've had several instances of blacks beating a white person, and saying "that's for Trayvon."

Sharpton, Jackson, et al are planning massive rallies/demonstrations/marches at the RNC in Tampa..they're hoping to upset the GOP, rally their base, and of course, get the MSM to focus on the Trayvon marches.

If there is an incident of a major race riot before the RNC..it will totally discredit these planned marches..thus they are tryign to dial it down BIG time...trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Long term yes, but in the short term they can do a lot of looting. The fact is the gangs are armed and organized. Most suburbanites are not armed. Those that do have weapons are largely unorganized. In fact any attempt to organize them gets suppressed by the cops. Just look what happened to neighborhood watch volunteer Zimmerman.

Once the rioting comes out of the cities it would take weeks for effective armed patrols to be put together. And in the blue states they would find themselves fighting the Cops and the National Guard more than the rioters.

Small towns, rural areas are certainly not unaccustomed to protecting themselves.

Note that i specifically mentioned suburban, not rural. In the rural areas the mobs wouldn't last five minutes. In the inner city they will be unchallenged. It is in the yuppy suburbs that the battle will be fought. And trying to convince my neighbors of that fact has convinced me that the majority are simply not ready for what is going to fall on them. I live there, I know.

These are the people who not only won't put in their own gardens, or make any preparation to feed themselves in an emergency, but will call the village on you if your garden is visible from the street. We had an extended power outage last year and there were only about a dozen houses in our subdivision that had generators. And two of those hadn't been stored properly and wouldn't start.

At a recent block party the subject of firearms came up. A little under half owned them. Another quarter were thinking it might be a good idea to get one. The final quarter were in whining histrionics about the idea of bringing firearms into their neighborhood. However of those that had firearms most were pistols. Fine for self and home defense, not sufficient for stopping a rampaging mob. It is illegal to own an assault rifle in Illinois so it doesn't get talked about in public. But I suspect that there may be at least a few in the subdivision. There will also be a few deer rifles to supplement those.

You might be able to mount a defense with the weapons available. But then you run into the biggest problem, attitude. The simple fact is that the people in my neighborhood I would most want around in a total SHTF situation are the ones I also know have bugout locations already set up. I do. It is not that we won't stand. It is just that Cook county Illinois is not where I would choose to make a last stand.

Depends on the suburbs you are referencing. Most I have lived in the majority are well armed with not only handguns and rifles, but possess what the MSM would label “assault weapons”.

In my current suburb in California, the demographics would closely mirror your example, and I would be one of those who would bug out to a more defensible position if it came down to it, but even in my current situation it would take a significant amount of firepower to take me out.

Those suburbanites who aren’t prepared only have themselves to blame and if they survive they will learn a valuable lesson.

I live there too FRiend. A few of my suburban neighbors are of Asian descent and they are just as well armed as I am. The rest are about 30% armed, 70% no...but 30% is more than enough IMO. There is a 6 week wait for a decent slot at the closest range. I think you would be surprised as how well the suburbs are armed, but its not neighborhood-type conversation. And if I ever get a call from a "pollster" asking me how many guns I own the answer would be "none".
