Poll: Lugar Trailing Mourdock By Five Points (Whoo Hoooooo)

Longtime Indiana Senator Dick Lugar is trailing state Treasurer Richard Mourdock by five points in the closely watched Republican primary, according to a new poll on behalf of Citizens United.

The survey shows Mourdock leading with 44 percent and Lugar at 39 percent, with nearly 17 percent of voters still undecided. Lugar supporters point out that Citizens United is backing Mourdock in the May 8 primary, however.

Both candidates have seen their favorable numbers plummet and the nastiness is expected to increase with less than two weeks left.

From Politico:

The Club for Growth has just reserved another $421,000 of TV time to batter Lugar, charging in a new spot that he is “clinging to power, throwing mud.”

Meanwhile, the pro-Lugar American Action Network is on the air with an ad attacking Mourdock’s “reckless” mismanagement of state money as treasurer.

In recent days, the Lugar campaign has also launched a series of attacks against the Tea Party challenger, claiming Mourdock failed to report several owned properties while highlighting that he once supported the Fairness Doctrine.

Dick Lugar missed his opportunity to retire gracefully after many years service to Indiana. He proved to be a fool for over staying...

You still have the very negative effect Romney will have on this primary ~ he depresses Conservative turnout substantially and that's going to eat away at Mourdock's lead like nothing else.

A fire hydrant has more personality than Lugar...kick this RINO to the curb, and shame on anyone that would cast a vote for him...

This poll was done before Sarah endorsed and Lugar lost the backing of of his major Super PAC backer.

I beg to differ. You should see the number (100’s) of Mourdock yard signs and the number of retire Lugar signs. As of today I have only seen 3 houses with Lugar signs.

Granted, this is Hamilton county we are talking about, but several hundred to 3?

The Mittbots engage in voter suppression. They will succeed beyond their wildest dreams in Indiana and other states holding primaries on the 5th.

I"ve been telling you guys you can't support or ACCEPT a Romney candidacy without giving it all up down the ballot ~ in both the primary and in the general election.

Romney is simply poison on a Republican ballot anywhere!

Still don’t agree. My apolitical neighbors were over last night. I asked them what they thought. “Lugar has to go.” I then asked will you vote in the primary this year. The response: a very enthusiastic “Hell yes we are voting. We said Lugar has to go.”

The on the ground sentiment here in Indiana is very very anti Lugar, and very tepid support from the pro Lugar people. Lugar is toast.

In addition, what difference does voting in the presidential primary for the presidential nominee ever make in Indiana. Can you remember even once that Indiana had any impact on the nominee?

How much do you want to bet that the same GOP-E folks demanding we fall in behind Mitt Romney will be trashing and backstabbing Mourdock if he knocks off their beloved RINO Lugar?

To them, not maintaining a residence in the state you represent isn't a flaw, it's sound financial planning. Why waste money putting on airs when you have become a Beltway animal anyway, and we all know that some animals are more equal than others. The hicks back home should be grateful for all of the influence Lugar has amassed. But nooo, they think that principles matter. Well, the upstart will just have to be made an example of, just like they did with so many upstarts in 2010. Can't have the order of thins upset now, with all that money and power in DC.

Lugar’s biggest sin was allowing Obama to put his name on the Nonproliferation bill back in 2007. That was the one legislative success that Obama could point to during his 2008 campaign. I have no doubt that Lugar probably did 90% or more of the work while Obama just voted “present”.

Nothing. It’s guaranteed to happen. This cuts both ways though. We are dismantling the GOP-E. Lugar plays a big role in the GOP-E. Taking him down is a warning to the rest of the GOP-E. We are coming for you next. Romney is a battle. We lost that one. At this point do we turn tail and run? Hell no. We are at war with the GOP-E. It is going to take a while to take it down, but I am not turning tail, and neither should any of you.

If this is true, it is truly a blessing. Originally coming from Indiana, I’m shocked at the apostacy of Lugar over the years.

There is a post elsewhere (maybe instapundit?) that the pro-Lugar Super PAC is ending their support.

Right now before the election, they must have no hope for him and are unwilling to throw good money after bad.

Well, what you say is simply baloney. I voted for Newt, I gave to Cain, but I attend major Republican events here in OH and there is NO sign of what you say about "suppression." Simply hogwash. We have a guy, Josh Mandel, with ZERO name recognition already within MOE of incumbent Sherrod Brown. It's one thing not to like Mitt. It's another to spread disinformation about the "impact" on voting at all levels. Not true, and the IN senate race is just another example.

Here's another: Chris Stewart, conservative in UT 2, just won his primary without a runoff and is easily the next Congressman.

All the Romney trash talk from Freepers, stating they would not support Romney, but would heavily support down ticket conservatives goes right out the window with this poster’s comment. His remark that many conservative will sit in their hands in this “Lugar” primary vote rings solidly of an troll “Obamabot”. LMG, “Lugar Must Go”. By the way poster, Mitt Romney is not running for the Senate. as these two gents are. Palin, Momma bear, Ya right on the money!!!

This Mitt hate needs to stop. The fact is, the conservative groundswell is everywhere and isn’t abating, regardless of what Mitt does or doesn’t do. In OH, Josh Mandel-—virtually an unknown, is now running within MOE of incumbent Senator Sherrod Brown; in UT 2, Chris Stewart, and conservative, just won without a runoff for what will be a safe seat. Almost everywhere you look there is excitement about GETTING OBAMA AND THE DEMS OUT, and if you can’t get behind Mitt, fine, but you better damn well get behind getting Obama out.
