Poll: Lugar Trailing Mourdock By Five Points (Whoo Hoooooo)

Longtime Indiana Senator Dick Lugar is trailing state Treasurer Richard Mourdock by five points in the closely watched Republican primary, according to a new poll on behalf of Citizens United.

The survey shows Mourdock leading with 44 percent and Lugar at 39 percent, with nearly 17 percent of voters still undecided. Lugar supporters point out that Citizens United is backing Mourdock in the May 8 primary, however.

Both candidates have seen their favorable numbers plummet and the nastiness is expected to increase with less than two weeks left.

From Politico:

The Club for Growth has just reserved another $421,000 of TV time to batter Lugar, charging in a new spot that he is “clinging to power, throwing mud.”

Meanwhile, the pro-Lugar American Action Network is on the air with an ad attacking Mourdock’s “reckless” mismanagement of state money as treasurer.

In recent days, the Lugar campaign has also launched a series of attacks against the Tea Party challenger, claiming Mourdock failed to report several owned properties while highlighting that he once supported the Fairness Doctrine.

“You need some real Conservative heroes. These guys ain’t it.”

I’m not trying to be overly contentious, but that is not my fault, nor is it Mitt Romney’s fault.

The field, this time, was wide open.

And even if it is not so wide open in the future, I’ll be open to all comers.

Sarah Palin CHOSE not to run, for example. Did somebody twist her arm behind the scenes? I don’t think so, because I think that if they had she would have let the world know.

This is a self-selected contest, an all volunteer army.

Being a nice Irish Catholic girl I don’t get your dig about the ‘almost pentecostals’ but that’s OK.

This is not an election for Pope of the US.

People don’t like Romney, I get it. I’m not crazy about him either.

But, we need to see when the conflict is on our own side.

I frankly don’t care about Mitt’s name on the ballot. That ship has sailed (as usual). I’m gonna give his name a glance and smile broadly to myself as I cast my vote for a Senator that’s not a clone of him and the rest of the Washington elite that shoved McCain and Romney down my throat.

And, hopefully, someday I can beam with pride as a Senator from the great state of Indiana casts a vote against whatever nonsense the liberals are proposing. Between Evan Bayh and Richard Lugar, I’ve been ashamed of my state’s Senators for most of my life.

Sometimes in life you have to fight like a girl. I may not be able to take you down with a roundhouse punch, but I will kick you in the plums, bite, scratch, pull hair, poke you in the eye and generally fight dirty. This is my kick to the GOP’s plums.

You should have been around back in the days of Vance Hartke and Birch Bayh ~ things improved under Lugar and Evan Bayh.

My grandma thought Birch Bayh walked on water for some reason. Looking back, I really don’t understand it but she’s been gone for years so now I can’t ask. We’ve come a long way! :-)

We had 10 official candidates. 7 of them were not Really Republicans, nor were they Conservatives.

What that did was divide the vote for the purpose of bringing Romney up to the #3 or #4 position early in the cycle.

The party has been cracking down on minority candidates at the state level by erecting onerous nominating petition requirements. All that has done is give the minority groups an edge over the more nebulous "movement" members of the Republican coalition.

"near pentecostal" kinda' includes all the graduates from Oral Roberts or Regents universities ~ they all fall into line with Romney.

If you know any RCs who graduated from either school you might ask yourself "Now how did that happen"?!

I met Birch numerous times; even had long discussions with him on transcontinental flights ~ he was a nice guy and he knew how to win elections. He could say "union" and "parity" simultaneously.

He met and married one of my not very distant cousins, so Evan is a relative of sort.

Never hung around with them socially but if I"d attended all the various family reunions over the years I'd met all of them over fried chicken and hickory nut pie fur shur.

Worse, I had a date once with Sandy Hartke. GAD! Got away from her fast ~ didn't she end up having 12 kids or something?

These people were all pretty typical of the sorts you meet all over Indiana and at one time the German Americans (43% of the state's population) were the Democrat party ~ more recently I think they've begun dominating the Republican party.

Then why would you cut off your nose by tolerating Romney?

12 kids!?!?! Too funny!

Thanks for the info. Maybe that’s what the attraction was for her: He seemed like just a normal guy. She was born in unfathomable poverty (back when “poor” really meant POOR) and lived most of her young adult life in the same circumstances. My Dad grew up in the UP of Michigan in an actual tar-paper shack and remembers her skipping meals so he could eat instead.

She despised “uppity” and pretense in anyone but I think she was jaded enough to see it where it didn’t always exist. I think he even made a campaign stop in our little town so that would have really impressed her!

Whodathunk a fellow Freeper could have helped me figure out my Grandma? Lol!

Well said. Too many here seem to want to have a tantrum and take the ball home. We have to focus on advancing conservatives at every level of government. We especially need to focus on Senate majority and pushing as far right as possible to get these reforms through.

You keep repeating yourself but with no data or evidence to support your contention. Or is this just one of those cranky internet opinions?

How much do you want to bet that the same GOP-E folks demanding we fall in behind Mitt Romney will be trashing and backstabbing Mourdock if he knocks off their beloved RINO Lugar?

I'll bet a $1,000 that you are full of crap and that when Mourdock wins in the primary, that the pubbies get 100% behind him.

Put up or shut up.

But I want the money in a escrow account, and I'll put up the same $ 1,000.

I am so tired of you whiners with big mouths and no balls.

Put up the money.

Oh, and Cantor is already working to sandbag Mourdock by having one of his pet groups encourage Dem and Independent voters to come out. So the GOP-E sandbagging of the Tea Party candidate is ALREADY happening.

But go ahead - nitpick on me while the GOP-E is up to their usual dirty tricks.
