If you haven’t heard all the recent chatter about Ted Nugent, you’re likely living in a hovel in the far reaches of Siberia. As a result of his highly outspoken views in support of freedom, the Second Amendment, and the American way of life in general, Ted has been persecuted by many.
I have a number of things in common with Ted, as many of us do. I love music, guitars, and firearms, especially the 10mm automatic – Ted’s all-time favorite pistol cartridge. I caught up with Ted at his Mescalero, New Mexico concert the other night and had the chance to discuss with him a few of the recent issues regarding his alleged actions in Alaska, along with a few other subjects. The following are quotes from Ted regarding some of the issues, particularly the bear hunting incident in Alaska resulting in him being charged with the illegal harvest of a black bear:
Why did you plead guilty in the Alaska case?
TN: “Just like in California, to fight the corrupt system would have bankrupted me, taken me away from my life support careers for God knows how long, and I don’t trust our court system. This Alaska charge was an unintentional technical violation of an unprecedented, never-before-heard of law, only in the southeast region of Alaska, where if your bullet or arrow shows any sign of hitting a bear, then your tag is invalidated. I still can’t find anyone who has ever heard of such a regulation, even amongst lifetime Alaska resident hunters, guides and outfitters, even the judge in Ketchikan stated on record during the court hearing that he had never heard of such a law. I was blindsided by this, and to my knowledge, the only person to ever be charged under this bizarre regulation.”
Did you have a blood trail on the first bear? How long did you look for it?
TN: “Yes, a minimal bloodtrail. My son and I, as always, searched diligently for many hours, even days. When we reviewed the tape in stop action, we realized that the arrow had actually glanced off the rib and not penetrated the animal. The animal was not hurt and certainly not killed.”
Did you know that Alaska had a law that stated that wounded equals a filled tag?
TN: “No. I’ve hunted for 60 years, 35 years in Alaska, and everyone knows that the universal tagging law everywhere has always been; “upon taking possession of the animal the tag must be applied.” This new, unprecedented regulation exists only in this southeast area of Alaska. I cannot find anyone who has ever heard of this rule.”
Will you hunt in Alaska again?
TN: “Absolutely, I love Alaska and the great people and hunting there.”
What do you have to say to the hunters who are now calling you a poacher?
TN: “I was raised to obey all laws, and I have throughout my life. I have never hunted without all the proper licenses, tags, permits, making certain I use the legal weapon, legal arrowhead, legal ammo, legal orange in the proper region. I have never hunted out of season or illegally after dark, nor have I ever knowingly broken any of the indescribable, outrageous volumes of strange, arbitrary, illogical, capricious game laws that exist. I am not a poacher, and people who claim that I am are small minded, shallow haters. My critics are mostly jealous because I am my own boss and have created an amazing quality of life for my family and myself through incredible hard work and dedication. You find someone who has a problem with me and you’re looking at an ignorant, cheap person. My supporters are legion, and the finest Americans there are. I am constantly invited to take terminally ill children on their last hunts, and to host the heroic wounded warriors of the US Military on hunting trips around the world. The absolute best of the best are on my side, so my detractors are exposed for the fools that they are. I couldn’t feel better about my real reputation and position in life.”
This appears to be a case where no one can live in the United States any longer without breaking laws.

So the real question is how does the (modern)10mm compare to the .357 magnum?
Of course, and it started with the feminist system of making it an offense to forget an anniversary date even though the girl is hiding that she is a stripper at night and has AIDS.
This is part of the pseudo-criminality system, because criminals who do not want to get caught have two ways to get out of court scott free:
1. Make sure they get some kind of job with the government preferably, making them as much part of the “statistical collective honeys” of the thugs.
2. Make sure others get caught before they do by the system, getting it overwhelmed with pseudocrimes.

How does the 10mm compare to the .357 SIG?
Reminds me of the time my Dad was ticketed for carrying two shotguns while hunting birds. My uncle passed my Dad his gun so he could step off the road and take a leak. Game Warden came by and saw my Dad holding two shotguns, asked my Dad what he was doing, Dad told him and that SOB wrote Dad up for it. Said it wasn’t safe. BS. This is the same Game Warden who was known to drive to goose blinds and sit in his truck for long periods before checking tags. All the other GWs walked out and if birds came over they would hunker down or get in the nearest blinds. Dude was a complete a$$ hat.

I have neither, but know many outfitter/guides/ranches that consider a wounded, not recovered, animal to be the end of your hunt.
It kind of compares like the difference between a .38 and a 9mm (logarithmicaly). That is, the total energy and performance out of the tube is about the same but how that power is released is different. The 38’s advantage is its lower pressure and handling, imo. .357s are more for revolvers, although you have out there autos using 44mags and 357 mags and revolvers using 9mm and 10mm.
Revolvers’ efficiency are more for power per shot downrange, whereas autos are for more downshots downrange.
I chose instead to buy a .460 Rowland kit for my 1911 instead of going to 10mm. It was cheaper, more powerful and less bulky than the long 10mm cartridge.
10mm has bigger bullet for stopping hunting power, has lower pressure hence better handling and it also has more power, than the 357 SIG.
Between the two I would go 10mm if your hands are big enough.
I believe the 10mm when shortened became the .40, and when the .40 became necked down, it became the .357 SIg. The 10mm is the “father-mother” of these cartdriges (father bullet, casing mother)
I have never heard of such a law in the United States before, but I have heard of such in some African countries.

It would seem that rule only applies in areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8. So it would seem he must have been in one of those areas.
Near as I can figure there is at least 25 Units.
So that rule is only in place for less than 25% of the hunting units.

`You are correct in that Units 1-5 are in the southeast panhandle of AK. Ted mentioned that the judge was in Ketchikan, so this bears out. Unit 8 is the island of Kodiak.
There is a saying in AK that you will go to jail longer for shooting a moose out of season than perhaps for murder. they take this very seriously up there.
Interesting that for 2012 this ‘wounded’ regulation applies to Elk in Unit 8 also.
I am confused about what ‘violation’ occured. We can surmise that there was a shooting encounter where TN shot at a bear and the bear ran off. That in itself is not a violation, it happens frequently. TN admits, and I believe him, as he is imho a very ethical sportsman, that he attempted to locate the animal. Still not a violation of any kind.
Did TN continue hunting? And is this the violation that he was charged with?
Having extensive experience with AKDF&G it leaves me wondering; perhaps someone can assist with the intel?
I think if I read everything correctly TN admits that in some fashion his arrow grazed the bear, knocking off some fur and leaving some blood on the ground.
The bear ran off, they couldn’t find it and.............
By the rules he was wrong. But I think the rules were written for a gut shot bear - not one that goes “Holy Crap” and heads for the high hills.
We are all potential felons three times a day.
Bingo, that is the plan. I noticed all the high profile GOP, and all the talking heads made this a top story. Anyone can be next, but it could never happen in America, is all I hear from all the patriots.
