Ignorant Maher: Romney Only Gives to Mormons - 'His Cult'; 'That's Not a Charity

Bill Maher on Friday evening once again displayed a level of ignorance and intolerance that should completely disqualify him as a political commentator.

On HBO's Real Time, the vulgar anti-theist said Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney doesn't give to charity. "All his charitable donations are to Mormons. He gives to his cult. That’s not a charity. They're not poor people" (video follows with transcript and commentary, serious vulgarity warning):

http://www.mrctv.org/embed/112327

S.E. CUPP: Let's make the distinguish though, just real quick, between Mitt Romney the person and Mitt Romney the politician, because Mitt Romney the person has donated millions of dollars to poor people.

BILL MAHER: To Mormons.

CUPP: To poor people.

MAHER: Not poor people. No, no, no. Wait, wait, I gotta call El Toro Poo Poo on that one.

CUPP: Yes.

MAHER: All his charitable donations are to Mormons. He gives to his cult.

CUPP: So what?

MAHER: So what? That’s not a charity. That’s not a charity.

CUPP: So we can’t help certain poor people.

MAHER: They're not poor people.

CUPP: Yes, they are.

MAHER: Name one poor Mormon. Alright, I’ve got to move on.

Now watch one of the most shameless liberal shills in the nation - someone completely comfortable with lying on television without batting an eye to promote his agenda! - actually disagree with Maher and agree with Cupp:

PAUL BEGALA, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST AND CNN CONTRIBUTOR: The church does do a lot of good. The church does a lot of good for a lot of poor people.

MAHER: That is some serious El Toro Poo Poo. That is some El Toro Poo Poo.

CUPP: So we're judging charity now based on religion?

MAHER: I don't really think you should judge charity. I don’t think giving to opera is charity either, or giving to Cornell which has plenty of Uncouth Sexual Reference money and never needs any…

CUPP (Who also went to Cornell University): Plenty of our money.

Now watch another liberal expose Maher as being a selfish, greedy millionaire:

ANDREW ROSS SORKIN, NEW YORK TIMES: Are you a giver?

MAHER: Never.

SORKIN: Never. Okay.

MAHER: Why should I be? They have a giant endowment - as does President Obama.

Yes, they have a giant endowment because people give money to them. That's how you get an endowment.

But Maher as usual was demonstrating that his ignorance on a variety of subjects knows no bounds.

Observe Romney's charitable giving as reported by the Christian Science Monitor in January:

While Romney is not thought of as a great philanthropist, his rate of giving is considered high. For example, in 2010 he gave $2.9 million or 14 percent of his income to charity. A typical person gives 2 to 3 percent of their income. And people who made $10 million or more typically gave 6.5 percent to charity, according to Roberton Williams of the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center in Washington.

“Romney’s rate is very high,” says Mr. Williams.

Part of the reason for the high rate of giving is Romney’s contributions to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormon church. According to the church, members are expected to tithe 10 percent of their income. In Romney’s case, in 2010 he gave $1.5 million, closer to 7 percent of his adjusted gross income. In 2011, he gave $2.6 million, or 12.4 percent of his income.

But Romney and his wife also gave a considerable amount of money – some $1.5 million in 2010 and $500,000 in 2011 – to other charities, mainly through the Tyler Charitable Foundation, apparently named for a street Romney and his wife lived on in Belmont, Mass. In 2010, the foundation had more than $10 million in assets.

In 2010, the largest beneficiaries of the Tyler Charitable Foundation included the Mormon Church ($145,000), the Friends of George W. Bush Library ($100,000), and the Center for Treatment of Pediatric MS ($75,000). However, the foundation also made contributions to organizations including the US Equestrian Team Foundation ($10,000), Harvard Business School ($10,000), and Homes for Our Troops ($20,000).

As is plainly evident, Romney doesn't only give to the Mormon Church as Maher ignorantly claimed. But even if he had, like most churches, Latter-day Saint Charities gives substantially to the poor:

Latter-day Saint Charities helps people become self-reliant and improve their quality of life through initiatives such as clean water, health, and food production. Latter-day Saint Charities also relieves suffering by providing life sustaining support during emergencies...100 percent of all donations go to help those in need. No administrative costs are deducted by LDS Philanthropies or our affiliated charities

LDS Charities actually has six charitable categories:

Click on any of those links and you'll find tremendous services for the poor.

Mormon.org elaborates:

Much of what is done in the Church is to bless and help those who are not Mormon. The Mormon Church has donated more than $1 billion in cash and material assistance to 167 different countries in need of humanitarian aid since it started keeping track in 1985. Many of these countries have few to no Mormons, but are also non-Christian. More than 53,000 Mormon missionaries serve through the world today. All of their service is to help those who are not Mormon. Joseph Smith himself taught that we are "to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all."

As such, Maher was 100 percent wrong - AGAIN!

I do so wish they'd make a LIST of the things that are

1. Ignorant and...
2. Intolerant.

What's a poor, unknowing soul to LOOK for in these writings?

Maybe he was trying out for a Living Prophet® gig!

(Refer to #5...)

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

because there is a certain group of Freepers whose only mission is to attack mormons.

I just HATE when that happens!!

Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?' [Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'. When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'? [Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).
Joseph Smith: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).

Brigham Young stated this repeatedly: "When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73); "The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171); "With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199); "And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.24); "Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).

Orson Pratt proclaimed: "Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255).

Orson Pratt also said: "This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses
, vol.18, p.44) and: "But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses , 18:172).

President John Taylor stated: "Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses , vol. 6, p.167); "Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses , 10:127).

James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).

President Joseph Fielding Smith said: "Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266). "For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).

More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear: "Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265); "Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132); "virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269); "Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).

President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).

President Wilford Woodruff stated: "the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses , vol. 2, p.196).

I’m not Morman, nor do I want to be, but I know the morman canneries do far more to help the poor, than many of the so-called “Food Kitchens” and federal programs do. [tcrlaf]

Sorry...this is a completely ludicrous statement.

This is ludicrous from a sheer budgeting and Mormon numbers' angle.

Of the 14 million Mormons, up to almost 9 million of them are either jack Mormons or are not your "weekly" Mormons. That takes the reality that 1.7% of the U.S. is Mormon -- and knocking that down to about .75% of the U.S. who are active Mormons...and are oft more overwhelmed than your avg. religious person due to the lay callings, temple rituals, genealogical research, and larger families that make up active Lds clans.

Of those 14 million Mormons, about 1.75 million are in Utah. (Utah has over 2.8 million pop; and 62.2% are Lds) So I would say almost 1/5th of active Mormons are based in Utah. They have marginal coverage in many states...and 21 canneries in the Eastern United States. Outside of Utah, Lds, Inc. has 73 canneries in the U.S....that's an average of less than 1.5 cannery per state (minus Utah). Source: http://www.providentliving.org/location/map/0,12566,2026-1-4,00.html

There's no way -- with the $ that the feds throw @ programs -- that a scattered Mormon approach averaging 1.5 canneries per state can even come close to matching the feds, especially when you take a closer look @ the locations of these canneries and see that many are missing from obvious key urban areas all over...

Oh, sure, you can easily conclude that the Mormons get more bang for the buck...are more efficient...and may even -- per cannery -- do better than the average fed-funded food kitchen...but so what? You're indicating privately-run programs beat out a fed bureaucracy probably every time?

Duh. If that's what you meant to say, to win the weekend Captain Obvious award.

I realized after my last post that I also falsely left the impression that these Lds canneries were primarily devoted to the poor. They're not.

They largely focus on stocking Lds families' pantries; as church leaders encourage them to keep a 2-year supply of food.

Indeed, the poor wind up benefitting -- because of the waterfall of always restocking according to can dates.

But that waterfall charity is home based; not Lds canneries...Obviously some Lds canneries food makes it directly to the poor...but that's not what these were designed to do.

Sources and funds for humanitarian work

All of these initiatives require manpower and while there are some full-time employees in administrative and clerical functions, there are also thousands of volunteer humanitarian missionaries. In emergency situations, local members and full-time missionaries who would normally devote their time to proselyting will participate in relief efforts, but in many of these more permanent initiatives the LDS Church uses Senior Missionary couples.

These couples are retired members of the LDS Church who devote six months to two years of their time to go anywhere in the world, typically at their own expense, to participate in these projects. Because of this volunteer force, the LDS Church is able to use 100 percent of money and goods donated in helping those in need. These missionaries often serve in activities related to their former profession. Doctors and nurses will serve medical missions either in the Neonatal Resuscitation programs or special missions to countries in need of dentists, eye doctors, surgeons and so forth. People with agricultural or engineering backgrounds will serve on the clean water initiative or else help farmers in developing countries.

Other members who are still working and raising families frequently donate time, money, and in-kind donations to help in these ventures. Members can volunteer at local canneries and farms to help produce food for the needy. They can volunteer to create the medical kits needed for doctors and new mothers in developing nations and many help make blankets for needy families. Many of these local initiatives are organized by the Relief Society. This volunteer force allows the LDS Church to reduce operating expenses and serve more people with their resources.

From 1985 - 2009, $327.6 million in cash and $884.6 million in commodities of aid was given throughout 178 countries

There are 14 million Mormons in the world.

Hebrews 9:27(KJV)

It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

If I were a MORMON; the following would SCARE THE HELL out of me!!

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

Yes, I have. I've not been across the Hell's Backbone road (yet) though.

(Evidently her rental car had a locating GPS system on it; from the clues given in the article.)

Lucky (or blessed) is the operative word, as ANY small misstep could twist an ankle, and, with no help, alone, remote, you could end up in a Hillerman book like Fallen Man.

Beautiful countrey out there around Escalante and Calf Creek (Make the hike upstream to the waterfall for a VERY refreshing dip in the pool. No ledges to climb; either!)

And, though it ain't that good THUNDERBIRD coffee, Kiva Koffeehouse can't be beat for location, location, location!

SL Tribune story said she was a BYU student forty years ago. Made an assumption she is Mormon. And she didn’t stop here for coffee.

I think a 59 year old going out on a hike alone says a couple of things; she is either very ugly or very stupid.

Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

I believe in our Constitution and the right of people to exercise their right of the free exercise of religion. I don't know what religion you are nor do I care. Your obsessive hatred of the LDS is not what this country is all about. I will reiterate that I view the LDS as a force for good in this world.

As far as incorporation is concerned, you don't seem to understand the legal reasons for doing so. Many religions have done the same thing, including Catholics.

I’m sorry to be vague in my comments. I meant that he (maher) just gave a mil to his cult (church of obama).

I don’t see anything wrong with growing up to be a Romney, but then I also don’t condemn people for their beliefs.

“There are 14 million Mormons in the world. What do you have against Mormons?”

They are spreading a false Christianity. Not simply a different spin (like Baptists, Methodists, Roman Catholics, etc.). They are not remotely “Biblical Christianity” and they utilize flim flam tactics to spread their “false gospel.”

Ultimately, true Christianity saves a soul from hell - the purpose of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God the Son. False Christianity not only prevents salvation, it does so pretending to be the real thing. I call it chocolate covered poison. It looks like candy, but it will kill you. It is an insidious danger and evil. Open evil, AKA Mr. Obama, is easily recognized by anyone with remote wisdom. Insidious evil, AKA Mormonism & Mr. Romney, look good and fool many to there destruction.

The founder of Mormonisn, Joseph Smith, was a early 19th Century equivalent to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Both men were consumate flim flam artists. I’m amazed that any would be so unwise to be fooled.

So you actually want to try and assert the false notion that I was condemning the young men or Milt Rominy with what I posted? ... Of course we can now accept that you feel the antichristian blasphemies in MormonISM are of no importance, perhaps not even antithetical to Christianity, which the founders of MormonISM claim to have ‘restored’ because ALL of Christianity was in apostasy. Do you also do your dainty laundry by hand?

So you disagree with the tenets of the Mormon religion. I am sure they don't believe they are spreading a "false Christianity." What's your point?

Unless you are an atheist or agnostic, there are many who would disagree with your religion and its tenets. Presently, Mormons are not committing acts of terrorism or killing those who disagree with them. In fact, they are engaged in charitable works here and all over the globe. Can't we just adhere to the First Amendment and allow people the free exercise of their religion?

“Presently, Mormons are not committing acts of terrorism or killing those who disagree with them.”

Well....Leading someone to hell is equivalent to killing them in my opinion. Besides, you asked me what I had against Mormons. I told you, but you wouldn’t accept it. Sorry, but I happen to hold very strong Christian convictions. Mormonism is NOT Christian. It is a pseudo-Christian Cult.

Look, I’m NOT advocating suppression of Mormonisn by force or law. The First Ammendment stands.

However, I will NOT give them a free pass on their lies to propagate as truth...and I WILL NOT help them get one of their own in the White House so he can use it as a means to evangelize for Mormonism - your a fool if you think he will do otherwise.

The founder of their cult, Joseph Smith, always wanted to be POTUS. Romney is just an extension of him. Smith was one of history’s greatest liars and frauds. Something Romney has proven to be.

Like I told you....STOP POSTING PRO-ROMNEY NONSENSE ON THIS FORUM. ROMNEY IS COMPLETELY TIED TO MORMONISM. So, your “favorable” posts about Mormons is just a backhanded way to endorse Romeny.

Ask Mr. Robinson if that is OK? This is supposed to be a Romney free forum!

LOL. Defending the Mormon Church doesn't equate to being pro-Romney or pro-Harry Reid or pro-Huntsman or pro-Brent Scowcroft or pro-Glen Beck or pro-Rowdy Gaines or pro-Steve Young or pro-Jack Anderson or pro-Marie Osmond or pro-Mike Lee or pro-Raul Labrador, or pro-Bill Marriott, etc. You are are confusing a religion with 14 million members worldwide with one individual you don't like.

Please see posts 86 and 89.Will you be massively zotting for the religious bigotry of hate posted? Are the band of bullies that promote your FReeperthon and or all that agree with you lock in step; exempt from the posted forum guidelines and rules? Are you aware that there is a group that flame and control the forum in a way so vile that I think they are DU sleeper trolls?

If Romney were Catholic would this type of religious bigotry stand; or be zotted? How is Romney any LESS of a reformed RINO than Gingrich? The official Romney issues page leave Romney about identical with Gingrich.Romney is much more conservative than he is portrayed. He was dealing with a complete Democrat legislature in liberal MA.

A reformed RINO is a reformed RINO; don’t judge the results of issues by a religion most are ignorant about that will have nothing to do with Romney as POTUS.You keep stating no abortionist statist.Yet you stood by while this forum destroyed pro life candidates- Perry,Bachmann and Santorum all under the guise of Palin was there first and ‘could’ be running.

In a previous post you used the term PDS.What if I were to call you ‘deranged’ because I do not agree with your position of enabling Obama with Romney hate. You show hate for Romney beyond any past PDSer. As the so called PDSer’s did not hate Palin they just did not think she was running or was positioned to.

“STOP POSTING YOUR RELIGIOUS BIGOTRY UNDER THE GUISE OF ATTACKING ROMNEY. THE MORMON CHURCH IS A FORCE FOR GOOD IN THIS WORLD.”

NO IT IS NOT!

Also, standing against falsehoods and outrights lies (even those done for “religious” reasons) is not bigotry. Don’t play the “bigotry” card...it is ever bit as bad as playing the “race” one. Have you no same.

Also, stop lying about not being a Mormon. You either are one or have some form of close ties. I can recognize a deceit when I read one’s posts.

Romeny’s religious beliefs are fair game. I have laid off anti-Mormon posting for quite awhile...because I avoid the “religion” forum. However, with Romney attempting to seize power, using all means of deceit and chicanary...consistent with Mormonism. Mormonism will be on trial as well.

And you ARE using it as a means to backdoor a Pro Romney agenda. Have YOU no shame!

If you call a tail a leg, how many legs has a dog? Five?

Only four. Calling his tail a leg doesn't make it so.

Likewise, your ACCUSATIONs of bigotry will have to have SOME evidence, as the prosecuting attorney's yelling and shouting is NOT convincing the jury.
