NM governor's grandfather not an illegal immigrant, became a US citizen in 1942

(AP) Ever since taking office last year as the nation's first Hispanic female governor, New Mexico's Susana Martinez found her family tree scrutinized over whether her grandfather was an illegal immigrant.

Documents obtained by AP, however, show that he was lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a permanent resident in 1918 and became a citizen in 1942, something not even Martinez knew and a discovery that removes a potential trouble spot for someone talked about as an attractive Republican vice presidential prospect for Mitt Romney.

Martinez was surprised at the news, ...

The first-term governor insists she's not interested in and wouldn't accept a spot on the ticket. But resolving the questions lifts a "hot potato off her plate," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics.

"It's been a controversy and it's always mentioned when her name comes up in connection with the vice presidency," he said. "Does it help her? Sure, if Romney has any interest in her and if she has any interest in accepting, if offered."

-snip-

News accounts about a 1930 census initially fueled the idea that Martinez's paternal grandparents had illegally entered the country. The census used an "AL" to designate that her grandparents were "aliens."

-snip-

she initially accepted media accounts and acknowledged that it appeared her grandparents had come to the U.S. without immigration documents.

-snip-

The AP obtained a "certificate of naturalization," dated April 6, 1942, from the National Archives Southwest Region center in Fort Worth, Texas.

-snip-

Sabato said questions about a candidate or elected official's family history are fair game in politics, and doubts that she would suffer much damage even if her family had entered the country illegally.

"Maybe it would be more fair if everybody were subjected to the same scrutiny," he said.

"And second, nobody has given Obama NBC status. The powers that be are ignoring and/or trampling on the Constitution."

One could say that they wanted to confer eligibility on Zero, however. At the very least, the timing of their legislative hijinks is highly suspect.

Reply to number 18.

If you give Rubio and Jindal a pass because Obama is ineligible, where does it end? Whats next? Anchor babies? Al Queda kids? How bout all those Palestinians moving to the US via Obama.

It ends by defeating Obama, Reid majority leadership & keeping the house. I am most worried about my college age kid’s economic future than any other issue. If no jobs, then anchor babies won’t matter. Mexico grew faster than US recently. There is a NEGATIVE flow of illegals back to Mexico.

I only deal with reality as it exists on the ground. Not my wishful thinking. You and I do not get to decide what is constitutional. It is the congress and SCOTUS. The sooner we get it, the better we will be. That does not mean you can not vote your conscience. But it is time to NOT waste time on issues which are settled. Such as Obama’s presidential qualifications. Let us spend our energy on denying him 2nd term instead of pontificating on NBC status of Rubio or Jindal. Keeping proper priorities front and center is the smarter move.

In those days that southern border was about as fluid as the Rio Grande itself. The salient point, I think (and I'm still trying to sort it out), is that she was born in the United States of parents who are American citizens. That would include territories held by the United States or out of country in United States facilities(i.e. US Army overseas).

PS: You all know as much as I on this point. I’m no expert. I just find myself reading whatever I can find on the subject of NBC.

Our previous governor, Bill Richardson made sure that illegals could get driver’s licenses legally and Governor Martinez tried to change that. The liberals tried to shame her because they told her that her grandfather was an illegal too. If she had known this at that time she could have shut them up.

Another reason, is that she has been mentioned as a vice presidential pick and unlike Obama whose citizenship and past is ignored, the news media bought into what the liberal NMexicans brought up for a gotcha and found that, low and behold, her grandfather actually came here legally and then became a citizen.

I’m just surprised that they didn’t just drop it when they found out.

Well, this isn't technically true. This is why the first amendment preserves the right for a redress of grievances, and why the amendment process is voted on and/or ratified by the states.

But it is time to NOT waste time on issues which are settled. Such as Obama’s presidential qualifications.

Obama's presidential qualifications are NOT settled, except for being ineligible for office. As I said, the powers that be are ignoring the Constitution on this issue. Just because they are doing this is not a reason for us to ignore it too. If we don't fight for what's right, then more Constitutional rights will be taken away.

That SOB is still enjoying living in the WH with free meals, no rent, free use of AF-1 747 jet, appointed 50 Czars, issued countless executive order and ALL ARE BEING ENFORCED, shoved Obamacare down our throats, burdened our future generations with $ Trillions in useless Stimulus & other spending, on and on and on. I wish it would be all declared null and void but I won't hold my breath.

If we don't fight for what's right, then more Constitutional rights will be taken away.

I have very limited resources to fight Obama. I will focus those resources on funding his opponent and some real conservative candidates for Senate and house. Fighting Obama's ineligibility is a noble goal, but it is not looking good. I have lived my life by focusing on achievable goals.
