Samsung outstrips iPhone sales to ring up record profit
The Guardian ^ | Friday 27 April 2012 04.28 EDT | Associated Press

Posted on 04/29/2012 7:34:53 AM PDT by SmokingJoe

A surge in Galaxy smartphone sales fuelled earnings at Samsung Electronics to a record high in the first quarter, usually a tough season for the global consumer electronics industry, outshining handset rivals such as Nokia.

Samsung sold more smartphones in the first three months of the year than Apple and raked in more than 70% of its operating profit from mobile businesses. Shares in Samsung shot up nearly 3%.

Net profit nearly doubled from a year earlier to a record 5.05 trillion won (£2.75bn) for the quarter to 31 March.

Operating profit also hit a record high, at 5.85 trillion won, which was in line with expectations. Sales rose 22% from a year earlier to 45.3tn won.

Strong demand for high-end smartphones, such as the Galaxy Note and the Galaxy S2 introduced last year, helped mask lower profit from memory chips, another Samsung flagship business.

"It was a shock for semiconductor, a surprise for handset," said Lee Ka-keun, a Seoul-based analyst at Hana Daetoo Securities.

The Suwon, Korea-based company expects to outdo its record profit in the coming quarters. It will announce a new version of the Galaxy phone next week and global demand for personal computers is picking up, bringing more cash to memory chip-makers.

-------------------

Samsung's mobile communications division, which includes smartphones, pocketed 4.27tn won of operating profit in the quarter after seeing significant sales growth of high-end smartphones in developing markets including China, a key battlefield for mobile phone makers.

After narrowly beating Apple last year, Samsung's smartphone sales exceeded Apple's by a large margin in the first quarter. Strategy Analytics said Samsung became the world's top smartphone maker, selling 44.5m handsets in the January-March period, followed by Apple's 35.1m.

The real reason for this is that the Obama administration worked to hold down ATT by denying the buy out of T-Mobile. Verizon is the chosen partner of the Obama administration. They have one in just about every field of enterprise, Goldman Sachs in banking and investment, Warren Buffet’s railroad, GE in green energy, and on and on.

just to keep things real: what might be a "record" profit for samsung isn't necessarily in the same league as one for Apple. Let's tally it up in a few years with total units sold.

And even then we'll still have to acknowledge that Samsung's (and everyone else's profits) were made possible by Apple's effective innovation. That's not likely to make a kewl headline.

Apple invented the product and therefore the market. If you had any principles worthy of the name, you wouldn't by anything that resembles or functions like an iPhone -- which they all aim to do.

Apple didn't invent the smartphone, touch screen, etc. They made one later and had better marketing.

Also, there's plenty of boycotts\buycotts among Freepers because of a company's liberal or conservative leanings.
In your mind that makes anyone a liberal??
Using this logic, anyone who buys Apple is a liberal.
You sure you're on the right forum?

” you wouldn't by anything that resembles or functions like an iPhone — which they all aim to do.”

You didn't see the latest iPhone, did you?
They're starting to mimic Android features and calls them new. Apple is popular, which is why they're expensive, but people are catching on to the shortcomings.

Samsung claims to have sold more Smartphones last quarter than Apple but Samsungs revenue and profit numbers don't support the claimed "sales" numbers. Most likely they are reporting total phone sales, including feature and dumb phones not just smartphones, or they are reporting phones "shipped" into distribution channels but not truly sold.—PING!

There’s really nothing muddled about it. Apple products are generally 20% more expensive than the competition, they prefer a locked down environment that limits the user’s control of the items they purchased, and frankly their UI isn’t really that intuitive. And, BTW, they didn’t invent @#%^, they’re just really good at putting a pretty face on a product somebody else invented. Depending on how you define it smartphones existed for anywhere from 10 to 15 years before the iPhone made em look purty.

> Most likely they are reporting total phone sales, including feature and dumb phones not just smartphones, or they are reporting phones "shipped" into distribution channels but not truly sold.

Like most such "So-and-so's sales beat Apple's..." headlines, all one has to do is be patient. The truth always comes out in the end, when the competitor "phases out" their new "iPhone killer" product and drops it from their line. As you point out, the real story is in the profit-and-loss statements from the company's officers, not the bullshit that emerges from the tech press' so-called journalists.

The problem with these headlines is that they use statements made by people who have every reason to lie. They're in the Sales and Marketing departments, not the Finance and Auditing departments, where truth is valued and must be adhered to.

But even though they're paid to prevaricate, these hacks are not stupid. They're basically writing advertising copy, not a term paper. They know that the only headline word/phrase that exceeds "Apple" for eyeball draw, is "Sex Scandal" coupled with the name of a well-known politician. If they could somehow position their new product sales figures press release next to an article about some politician paying for a BJ in a gay bar, or getting caught in a threesome with a whore and a sheep, you know they would.

BTW, no offense or disparagement intended to the S&M individuals personally. They're just doing the job they're paid to do, and I understand that. But we gotta call a spade a spade, or as a buddy used to say, "it's a f*&%@ing shovel".

I have a Samsung Galaxy II S, the only issue I have with it was the short battery life when I went app crazy at first, so I minimized my app usage.

Its a great phone, its like having a Bugatti that you commute to a construction job on a daily basis. Really, I don’t even use a fraction of its capabilities except for its 4G internet capability when I am out in the field.

No video conferencing, no social clubs, I don’t text. To me its just a phone that does take great pictures. Its so complicated I just gave up trying to figure it out. Kinda odd knowing its so full of tools yet I treat it like a shovel.

Mobile technology is still in its infancy, even the "smartphone" and tablet markets. When Apple released the iPad a couple years back, I predicted they would soon sell over a billion of these a year (worldwide) and they are well on their way to doing that.

The numbers we are already seeing with regard to smartphones and tablets is staggering but it is only just beginning. Soon, most people on this Earth will have smartphones and multiple tablets.

By 2015, many people will have a tablet for home, a tablet for work, a tablet for the car (soon to be mounted in dashboard and integrated with car) and another couple extra tablets such as in the bathroom and out on the patio. All these tablets will be linked together through the cloud so as soon as you update a contact, purchase an e-Book or an MP3 music file, all your other devices will be instantly updated so it will be transparent to you what device you are currently using. All your data will by synced.

We are going to see some trillion dollar companies (in terms of market capitalization) within the next decade. Apple, Google and Samsung to be sure. Likely others too.

My unofficial wild assed guess is never, as an official supported feature of iOS, because the selected characters are not recognized in iOS as selected until the user LIFTS his finger from the touch screen. Sliding away cancels the touch. This results, in test after test, in greater accuracy for text input.

what is so great about the Galaxy?

For me, the big, BIG screen. It's fast, it's bright, and it's readable.

It can also be a bit of a pain, ergonomically speaking - I had the same problem with my first iPhone, it just took some getting used to. The real reason I like it is because I'm an IT geek and I can root it and do whatever I want afterward. Custom ROM, choice of OS; it's pretty nice if you like that sort of thing.

Thank you. My daughter is going to stop by today with her kids and between them they have 3 iPhones... I plan to play with the phones and try to see if I could get used to them.

I guess if I bought an iPhone and hated it, I could always give it to my wife. LOL... and get my Droid back. ;>)

I already have the big 27” iMac, an iPod, and iPod and would like the full set. LOL

ANOTHER QUESTION: Am I going to hate myself for not waiting for the iPhone-5 that ‘could’ come out this summer?????

“They’re in the Sales and Marketing departments, not the Finance and Auditing departments, where truth is valued and must be adhered to.”

The suits worn by the CPAs are part of the act.

Do you honestly think they are truthful, after Arthur Andersen, etc? (They were simply the ones that were caught, warning the remainder to be careful, more creative, hide behind new regs/rules/practices)

Reporting companies pay their CPAs millions each year. Do you think they expect to be hassled, or expect to be assisted, for their money?

Deception through Sales/Marketing is really easy, for you deal with the unwashed masses.

Deception through Accounting/Finance is more complicated, complex, for you are dealing with six figure professional crooks (including those in government), with MBAs, JDs and CPAs.

How does GE make billions in profits, and pay no taxes?

“Truth valued and must be adhered to?”

That's really strange. The US Patent Office would strongly disagree with you. apple receives upwards of a DOZEN patents weekly. Included in those were patents on the multitouch screen used all smart phones today. Yes, they did not invent the "touchscreen" but, if you look back, you will find they did indeed invent the palm held computer with touch screen capability, called the "personal digital assistant" and in fact coined the name PDA with the Newton, which is the underlying base of the smartphone... And there were Newtons with phone capabilities... Invented by Apple! The Newton was in development before 1990. . . And patented by Apple. Apple has thousands of patents: legitimate patents for real inventions that they have spent billions of dollars developing or purchasing. As for the iPhone, there were smartphones before the iPhone, and there are smartphones after the iPhone. . . and there is a WORLD of differences between the designs and if you can't see the differences you are being deliberately obtuse!

Just because they receive patents on things doesn’t mean they invented the smartphone. Or the GUI OS. Or the PDA (Psion 1984). They might be the first to add widget X to gadget Y, but both the widget and the gadget already existed. Usually what they are is the first one to make gadget Y popular and profitable.

I didn’t say there wasn’t a difference in design, don’t lie about what I said, I simply pointed out that smartphones existed at least a decade before the iPhone so saying Apple invented the market is simply, oh lets use your words, deliberately obtuse.

I did not "lie" about what you said. I quoted you verbatim. You implied they invent nothing. I correct your lie with facts. In fact, Apple NEVER claimed to have invented the smartphone. They said they "re-invented" it.

The 1984 Psion has the same relationship to the PDA as the horse and buggy has to a model T automobile. One line display, no touch screen, applications on cartridges at high cost, it lacked a clock and calendar... It was, at most a 4k memory note book... With limited special purpose modules and one that could be user programmed for simple calculations.

I never said ANYTHING about there not being differences, you saying that I did is you LYING, which is what you always do.

The Psion was the first PDA. Those are the facts, Newton was NOT first. Yes Newtons had more features, but that just makes it another example of exactly what I said, Apple taking an existing gadget (the PDA) and adding widgets (like a calendar) and then the lying fanboys insist Apple was first. They weren’t, Psion was first, by 8 years.

In your world little real work will be done. Just people tripping on themselves, dicking around on pad devices bouncing oh so valuable information around.

Not sure I agree with you there. My company is in process of rolling out tablets to to all field employees and building apps that will deliver information specific to their tasks.

For example, a service ticket comes in to repair a particular piece of equipment in the field. The technician gets a message on his tablet with the model, the customer information and the address. By tapping the address, a GPS app will open up, determine where the technician is currently and map out the most efficient route. Along the way, technical manuals and parts catalogs specific to that model are being downloaded to the tablet as well as all technical bulletins for that model and suggested fixed from our solution database.

Tech arrives on site and has all information necessary to make the repair efficiently on the tablet device. Meanwhile, invoice for the customer is being generated on the fly and is ready for the customer to sign by the time his toolbag is closed. If tech needs a part, he can order it from customer location and also see national inventory of that item so that if a technician across town has it in his truck, we can dispatch the call to him so that the job can be finished same day.

Possibilities are endless. I was at the doctor's recently and the doctor came into the room as my information was downloading to his tablet. It's a whole new world out there. Not all people are using tablets to text each other and watch YouTube videos like you seem to think.

The psion was NOT a Personal Digital Assistant. It was a limited purpose hand held computer with a single line passive screen and an awkward user interface. Just because YOU and other Apple trolls want to call it such when it lacked basic organizer applications like a clock, calendar, reminders, and basically had just a limited address and phone number list with a small note pad capability with a 4K memory limit and was called a "pocket organizer" it was by NO MEANS anything like a fully capable computer! It was more a glorified calculator. I had a digital watch that had many of those capabilities by the end of the 80s but IT wasn't a PDA either. . . And it DID have a clock and calendar!

If you want to stretch fact like that to include the Psion, then the TRUE first PDA was a spiral bound 2" x 4" note book and a pencil my father carried in his shirt pocket for fourty years. He kept his appointments, his addresses and phone numbers, a collection of poems, some drawings and plans for inventions ( a couple he patented!), important dates, thoughts(!), notes, reminders, and a host of other things in that notebook/PDA. He's been dead since 1995 but I still have that PDA and there are no batteries to run down and the pencil doesn't even need sharpening; he upgraded to a mechanical one sometime in 1991! But the erasure mechanism leaves a lot to be desired. . . it leaves smudge ghosts now. . . easily read remnants of what was erased. Best of all, it has far more than 4K of capacity! My dad, though, before he died, was getting close to using what capacity it had...

It WAS a PDA. Sure it wasn’t a PDA with a touch screen but it WAS a PDA, and it WAS the first, and trying to say it isn’t is just more of you LYING.

It didn’t have to be a fully capable computer. to be the first PDA something only has to be a Personal Digital Assistant, and that IS what a pocket organizer is.

The only anybody doing any stretching is you. Trying to find some way to make Apple first. They weren’t, they never are. Those are the facts. And none of your pathetic lies change the facts.

Oh and spiral bound notebooks aren’t digital, and one would have to be a deliberately obtuse liar to say it was.

It was a business oriented ADDRESS BOOK, with calculator capabilities, nothing more! Without a calendar, or a reminder system, it cannot be consider to be a "personal assistant" device. there were other similar devices. It's ONLY claim to fame was its portability. . . within a year, there were a lot of portable organizers, some smaller. They were not anything like what Apple made with the Newton. . . a programable device with a touch screen that you could interface with with learnable handwriting! A "personal" digital assistant that had the capability to REMIND you of something in real time, or to warn you about an upcoming event
