Is America Becoming an Anti-Risk Welfare State?
Barron's ^ | April 28, 2012 | VITO J. RACANELLI

Niall Ferguson, economic and financial historian, sees parallels between the U.S. now and the mid-20th-century U.K.

In his latest book, Civilization, The West and the Rest, the economic and financial historian Niall Ferguson argues that Western civilization's rise to global dominance over the past 500 years was due mainly to six killer apps, as he calls them: competition, science, rule of law, modern medicine, consumerism, and the work ethic.

While "the Rest" lacked these concepts, they might not for much longer, as emerging markets are quickly catching up. Someday, they could even surpass the West. (On May 22 and 29, PBS will air a program based on Civilization.)

The Scottish-born Ferguson says that North and South American economies and institutions are converging. And, he adds, while China remains a long way from a rule-of-law democracy, anyone who thinks it will retreat from the markets is in for a rude surprise.

And anyone who doesn't think China will -- however briefly -- descend into a wild civil war within the next 10 years is also in for a rude surprise...

“Heck, kids aren’t even allowed to really win at organized sports anymore.”

It already is and its strangling all but a few.

My electric company recently got approval to raise rates to make up for the “revenue loss” resulting from falling demand. Market fluctuations were once seen as a normal part of doing business and investing meant taking a risk. Today, stockholders are protected from the risk they knowingly take.

HOWEVER in the spirit of fairness I have to point out that the same electric company is forced to provide service to a good many people who don’t pay.

That milestone was passed a while back.

The government is now engaged on a campaign to discredit and harm those who object to the expanding and increasingly socialistic federal government.

The next step will be to criminalize any criticism of welfare or socialism as a hate crime.
