Chief: Drones 'certainly' coming to skies over Beltway

WASHINGTON - Look up. Drones are "certainly" coming to the skies over the Beltway in the next few years, one area police chief says.

The use of drones in the D.C. area became public information last week, after the Federal Aviation Administration released a list of agencies currently or previously permitted to use the unmanned aerial vehicles. It included many federal departments, such as Agriculture, Homeland Security and Energy as well as local organizations such as Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Tech.

Soon, the Fairfax County Police Department may be added to that list.

"Drones will certainly have a purpose and a reason to be in this region in the next, coming years," said Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer, while speaking on WTOP's "Ask the Chief" program on Monday. "Just as a standpoint as an alternative for spotting traffic and sending information back to our VDOT Smart Traffic centers, and being able to observe backups."

This creeps me out a mite.

Can’t hear’em and we can’t see’em.

In the months after 9/11, those of us in the DC area could, for months, hear fighters doing race track loops around the beltway. They were pretty high up in case they had to go supersonic. At 5:30 AM, the planes were quite simple to hear.

Drones, I don’t think they’re that detectable.

I guess there will be many “totally neckked” sunbathing pictures on the Internet. I give it a couple of years before there is a scandal about the leaks of lurid photographs

Between drones or helicopters, I’ll take drones. I’m sick of the nightly helicopter noise and it’s going to be one or the other no matter what.

WE the people are now....WE the suspects.

Very sad to witness our freedom and liberty slowly slip away.

I've written, called, emailed, helped get out the vote, been politically active...you name it. For what?

Republican or Democrat, we keep marching headlong into some sort of super surveilled socialistic police state.

"In the far distance a helicopter skimmed down between the roofs, hovered for an instant like a bluebottle, and darted away again with a curving flight. It was the police patrol, snooping into people's windows."

At least with a chopper, you'll have some warning before they gun you down.

I hate the arrogant Deucebag myself, but the surveillance society coming to fruition around us has been a bipartisan effort.

I don't know why Conservatives think that handing a president more and more power just because he happens to have an (R) after his name at the time won't come back to bite us.

The Patriot Act yielded NDAA -passed by a GOP House, and now a kenyan marxist wields it.

Neither party gives a s#*t about Freedom or the Constitution.

The Republicans are even worse because they're content to eat the scraps that DemocRATs toss them off of the tax revenue table.

This one has been flying over the west part of the beltway since the mid-2000's.

I wish they would give us a number to call so we could get the drones to target the drunks, reckless drivers, cell phone talkers and unlicensed illegal aliens.
