Report: Almost 70% of Guns Found in Mexico Came From US

A new report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) shows that more than more than 68,000—or 68 percent—of the 99,691 guns recovered in Mexico between 2007 and 2011 were either made in the U.S. or legally brought into the U.S. at some point.

As you might expect, gun-rights advocates and gun-control advocates view the data quite differently, The Hill reports.

Gun-rights advocates say the 68 percent number is overstated because the sample pool only reflects guns submitted to the ATF for traces. There are many other guns in Mexico, and many don’t have a U.S. connection, they say. Guns-rights supporters say Democrats try to use the inflated percentages to promote gun control. …

IIRC, you are limited to certain calibers in Mexico, and they cannot be common military calibers like the 9mm or 45acp.

The 38 Super is legal.

Thus the popularity of the 38 super pistol in Mexico, which is more powerful than a 9mm.

Too bad the 38 Super gets little love here. It’s a great round.

Sounds like a fair trade to me. Besides. If things here keep going like they’re going, Americans are going to need all the guns we can get.

Just wondering..... what percentage of the other consumer products in Mexico came from the US? Cars, packaged food, clothing, medical equipment etc. etc.?

Another great reason the seal the Damned border. While we are at it we can seal the NYC limits and several of the blue state borders.

A new report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF)

An emergency smokescreen to obscure Fast and Furious, and remove attention from Holder's contempt citation, is more like it.

Just check with Oliver North’s successor. I’m sure he could explain how all that works.

“Report: Almost 70% of Guns Found in Mexico Came From US”

Even if this is true, which it’s not, it is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT as regards US gun laws.

Sounds like the “create a problem then impose a solution” tactic indeed.

Anyone who refuses to recognize selection bias must think a lot of strange things.

I mean 30% of all children are unrelated to the person their mother says is the father - if you go by the reports of the labs who determine such things. (most people don’t check - those that do usually had suspicions.)

Someone in the industrialized world is three times more likely to get cancer! (many cancer deaths in the third world are never diagnosed as cancer.)

Etc, etc, etc.

Are people really this stupid? Or just a significant percentage? Is there a selection bias towards idiots with no understanding of math going into journalism?

Yeah, and almost 70% of that report is bullsh!t.

70% of guns TRACED (had an S/N in somebody's database) came from the US.

Doesn't mean my 2nd Amendment rights should be infringed.

We don't have comprehensive registration (my God I hope we never do) so there is NO WAY this number means anything.

“Almost 70% of Guns Found in Mexico Came From US”

Yeah. Courtesy of Eric Holder and the ATF. They forgot, conveniently, to mention how many hand grenades they sold them.

To paraphrase:

“Of all the guns recovered in Mexico that are stamped ‘Made in USA’ other otherwise appear to have originated in the US, it turns out that only 70% actually were!”
