Native American group: Elizabeth Warren ‘better be able to defend’ ancestry claim

A prominent Native American group says Massachusetts Senate hopeful Elizabeth Warren had “better be able to defend” her past claims of being an Indian-American minority.

The Democratic candidate is facing questions about her heritage following the revelation on Friday that she described herself as a Native American minority in professional law school directories during the 1980s and ’90s.

“Once you put that down, you better be able to defend it,” Ray Ramirez of the Native American Rights Fund told The Daily Caller on Monday.

Warren, who no longer publicly refers to herself as Native American, has disputed that she claimed Indian-American minority status then to give herself a professional advantage.

Asked for evidence of her ancestry to back up the candidate’s past statements, a Warren spokeswoman told TheDC on Monday that the campaign is “working on digging up some sort of evidence to appease” inquirers.

But the campaign hasn’t been able to immediately provide any documentation. The Boston Herald reported Friday that the Warren campaign said the “tales of Warren’s Cherokee and Delaware tribe ancestors have been passed down through family lore.”

Sounds like Prof. Warren was able to get ahead by claiming “minority” status, thereby taking a position that should have gone to a real Indian. It reminds me of the government procurement set-asides for minority-owned business where some white guy gets a minority partner, phonies up the ownership of the business to make it look like they have a majority share and gets a contract intended for a black person. My prediction: She will have a VERY hard time defending this and will be out of the race in a month.

The Warren camp finally found evidence that her great-great-great grandmother on her mother's side was listed as Cherokee on her marriage certificate.

So Grannie Liz is like 1/32 Native American.

But that didn't stop Grannie Liz from claiming she was a Native American minority for "official purposes" . . . i.e., to give her social standing among the perpetually dyspeptic class.

Honestly, this is extremely shameful.

It looks like this ummm “woman” has used unfair advanatages all of her life. That is why she assumes others do it as well, like wealthy people and corporations.

Actually, she looks an awful like Mari Boine ~ a well known Sa'ami singer. The Cherokee and Delaware are understood to have a high incidence of a particular gene sequence ~ found in the Sa'ami, Fulbe, Yakuts and Berbers.

I think there is a question here, but her relationship may be the reverse of what she imagines.

I don't think it's that so much as it makes her . . . at least in her mind/the liberal's mind . . . more "interesting" than just being a white broad. And plus, it gives her "cred." Liberal white people are ashamed of being white.

Heard this AM on Boston TV that a local geneologist discovered that her great great great grandmother was an Indian. This makes her 1/64 (?). Don’t know if this qualifies.

The Dawes Rolls and a Blood Quantum control who is a Cherokee.

You actually can be a Cherokee but if your ancestors failed to get on the Dawes Rolls then you will never be enrolled in the tribe. Many South Central Indians identified as "MINGO" may well be Cherokee or Iroquois but not qualified for enrollment in either. NOTE: Historically both Cherokee and Iroquois groups leveed people out of tributary Mingo groups.

One interesting situation in today's world is that there has been so much intermarriage among and between Indian groups that you have 100% Indians who no longer qualify for the tribe into which they were born ~ so they've gotta' go through all the genealogical records to find out where they might qualify.

That can be a real problem when the tribes records are sealed (like the Iroquois).

The real problem is that her claim mattered at all to her employment opportunities.

-—I can see a lib taking a lot of pride in “minority” status, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she intended to play it for what it was worth.-—

Apparently her career took off at about the same time she claimed Indian heritage. Stay tuned.
