(CT) House Passes Controversial Same-Day Voter Registration

After more than five hours of debate, the state House of Representatives voted Monday night for the controversial Election Day voter registration bill that has a long history in the state legislature.

By a vote of 83-59, the House voted allow the same-day registration, despite complaints by opponents about potential fraud. Nine conservative Democrats broke with their party and voted against the bill. Only one Republican, Livvy Floren of Greenwich, voted in favor.

Lawmakers have been clashing for more than a decade as the issue has been blocked by a veto by then-Gov.John G. Rowlandin 2003 and a federal court ruling in 2005 in Connecticut that rejected same-day registration.

In an impassioned speech, House Republican leader Larry Cafero of Norwalk gave a hypothetical that "a little brat from Virginia'' could vote by absentee ballot in a presidential election in his home state and then vote while away at college in Connecticut.

"What happened to my vote that was legal?'' Cafero boomed on the House floor. "What happened to my vote that was legal?''

Many years ago while visiting my mom in Minnesota and having voted absentee in my own, I was approached by a POLL WORKER who asked me to register and vote that day. I told her I was visiting from out of state and had voted before I left. She said it did not matter and that I could register there and vote again.
It was a Presidential election. I doubt it was legal then but perhaps it was. DFL state you know.

I hate to appear to be rolling over for the Left, but we can pretty much just write off leftist states like this; they are terminal diseases. Condolences to the few conservatives who live there, but even with honest elections, you almost can’t win in New England.

Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Wyoming and Washington DC.

Montana began Election Day voter registration in 2006, North Carolina in 2007, and Iowa in 2008. Connecticut and Rhode Island also have Election Day registration, but only for presidential elections. (North Dakota, unique among the states, has no voter registration requirement at all.)

There's a chance the rest of New England will follow this model. A bus full of activists (or rented street bums) could hit the polls in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine in a 12-hour period.
