NYC: Barbers Canít Charge Women More Than Men
foxnews.com ^ | 5-1-12 | By Todd Starnes

Posted on 05/01/2012 1:03:12 PM PDT by rawhide

A New York City barber was accused of violating the city’s discrimination policy because he charged women three dollars more for a hair cut than men.

“I’m here for 21 years and I’ve never heard of such a thing,” said Leon Kogut, the owner of Leon’s Fantasy Cut in Brooklyn. “The guy tells me this is discrimination of a woman.”

An inspector slapped the barber with three violations totaling $650 in fines.

Kogut said the inspector took issue with the fact that he charged $13 for a man’s haircut and $16 for a woman’s.

“A woman’s haircut requires a lot of skill,” Kogut said. “You have to style the hair, blow dry, use the mousse, the hairspray. It could take hours to get her hair cut.”

On the other hand, he said, it only takes a few minutes to cut a guy’s hair.

“It’s a different kind of hair cut,” he said.

Kogut tried to reason with the city inspector.

The inspector was not swayed and told Kogut that to be in compliance of the law – he could only charge different prices for “long hair” and “short hair.”

“I said, ‘Okay, I’ll do it. It’s my mistake,’” he said. “But I never know this – nobody ever told me this.”

But that wasn’t the end of Kogut’s problems. It turns out the city also took issue with his nearly 100-year-old cash register.

Why didn’t the cash register print receipts, the inspector demanded to know.

“I told him, ‘the cash register is three times older than you, sir,’” Kogut said. “The cash register is 93 years old.”

That resulted in another fine for the 64-year-old barber.

“Nobody ever asks for receipts in a barber shop,” he said. “I’m here 21 years in this shop and nobody asks for receipt.”

Well I could see why you might charge more for women they generally have longer and more hair then men so it would take longer more time more money.

Win
The
Future

It takes astronomically longer to do a woman's hair! I go to the same stylist as my fiancée, and I ALWAYS go first. It takes her 10 minutes to do my hair, if that. I made the mistake of letting her go first once... yeah, won't make that mistake again.

Does Bloom-in'-idiot-berg have people scouring the streets of NYC for "issues" like this faux-discrimination crap?

Now if a woman wanted THIS haircut - I am sure the barber would have charged her the man haircut rate. If, that is, that he recognized that she wasn't a man.

Wow, fining the guy for not printing a receipt???? SHoudl have told him I hand write them for those who ask.... there is no law requiring a cash register generated receipt.

This inspector needs fired and banned from any sort of civil service permanently, he’s clearly a little man trying to use his job to make himself feel big.

Some women’s salons charge more for long hair. Let’s see if we can find a discrimination issue for them too.

With all the gender-bender nonsense around, a woman could claim she’s really a man, also.

Rediculous nanny-state, communist BULLSHIT. New Yorkers keep electing that socialist idiot, Bloomberg their mayor, and this is what they get. Next they will want to regulate how many times a day you can go to the toilet, how often you can blow your nose, how many hours you can sleep, etc., etc. Luckily New Yorkers are cleaver and resourceful enough to “get around” this kind of crap...but it’s very annoying!!

BTW, for NYC $16 for a woman’s haircut is a darn good deal.

I go to barber shops. I stay away from anyplace that claims to do “styling” or that wants to involve liquids of any kind in any way. As a result, women are non existent in the shops I frequent.

I think this guy’s solution is simple. Whack off the ladies’ hair in the same way he trims the men. I’ll bet none of the women come back. Problem solved.

I hope this absurd exercise in petty authoritarianism receives wide publicity.

People need to wake up and realize where electing leftist Democrats eventually leads. Their political ideology demands that every facet of our lives be somehow controlled by the government bureaucracy. This brain-dead harassment of a poor barber by some arrogant, overpaid New York City bureaucrat over something as absurd as charging more for a woman's haircut than a man's and not having a cash register that prints receipts (that can be hand-printed just as easily) with insanely high fines that probably equal a weeks income or more for the barber represents the kind of government leftist politicians dream about.

That the Brooklyn barber, a refugee from Communism, sees the parallels between the Communist government in 'the old country' and what the New York City government is doing under the leftist billionaire mayor, Michael Bloomberg, should send chills down the spines of Manhattan residents. The tragedy is that it won't.

“You have to style the hair, blow dry, use the mousse, the hairspray.”

Needs a new price chart!

Hair Cut = $13
Hair Style = $16

If a woman wants a cut, she gets no style, blow dry, mousse, or hairspray!
