Newt Gingrich Says Farewell In Web Video And Vows To Help Defeat Obama

Without actually mentioning Mitt Romney, former Republican presidential candidate thanks supporters for a 'terriffic campaign' 1 May 2012

Newt Gingrich has said he will quit the race for the Republican presidential nomination and will throw his political weight behind Mitt Romney for the presidency in what he called the "most important election in our lifetime".

Speaking in a web video to thank supporters, the former speaker of the House of Representatives did not endorse any other candidate, and made no mention of Romney by name. But he did say he will be campaigning to prevent Barack Obama's re-election in November, the prospect of which he called a "genuine disaster". He said he would officially suspend his campaign on Wednesday.

"The issues are the same," he said. "We're still faced with a tremendous crisis of our country's future. A re-election of Barack Obama will be a genuine disaster. And all of us have an obligation, I think, to do all we can to defeat Barack Obama."

Gingrich's withdrawal from the race leaves only Ron Paul as a distant challenger to Romney for the Republican nomination.

Farewell Newt. Disappointed but not discouraged.

We must defeat Obama at all costs.

The MSM didn’t pick my candidate. And they continue to support who they picked, it has no relevance to me.

He’d’ve made a great president. Do what you have to, Newt.

Looks like a primary vote for Rabid Ron.

Weakest crop of candidates in either party since the 1972 Democrats. Absolutely pathetic and painful to behold. Only thanks to Citizens United do we even have a prayer of defeating the Usurper in November.

A man of courage, vision and bold ideas (some good, some not so good). I would like to see him in some advisory capacity to either the Executive or Legislative branches.

Tell preacher boy, thanks for giving the nod to Romney.

Now, tell us to go vote for Romney (what a joke)

Newt’s ideas should remain upfront in the republican platform. Personally, I am grateful for the accomplishments by the former Speaker..he started a revolution for the conservative cause.
I feel as if we are left with Karl Rove, Coulter via Romney. Fox News must be overjoyed.

Be on the look out for the video posted from Newt’s website.

VinL or someone will likely post a thread of its own, and we can ping his list.

Amen! he was a mover and a shaker. Blocked and fought a liberal president and started a revolution. Goes to show you what can be accomplished by true conservatives in congress against any leftwing agenda. Keyword is the guts and determination to do it. Let the govt shut down..fight the sobs.

This was a sinking candidacy from the very beginning. Newt should have known that his personal baggage aside, his luggage would have sunk a fleet of cruise liners. He nicely played the role as spoiler-in-chief for Santorum by siphoning off enough votes to allow Romney squeaker wins in MI (3%) and in OH (under 1%) over Santorum. At the end of the day this was Hindenberg waiting to explode. Quixotic and erratic, the campaign lost its way when it was dealt a broad-based clobbering in FL where Newt lost every major demographic, and then continued to have his negatives climb sky-high and his gender gap with women expanding to becomes oceans apart. The consummate Washington insider photographed on a park bench with Nancy Pelosi for his support of cap and trade, with a $1.6m Fannie Mae albatross around his neck was consigned to making off-the-wall promises of permanent moon-based colonies within eight years and $2.50 pie-in-the-sky gas/gallon within two years. With his “southern strategy” reduced to ashes, the continuing campaign punctuated by penguin bites and bounced checks in Utah descended into parody.

Exactly, he’s a fighter for the RIGHT thing and the non fighters get out of the way, there is one coming through.

And there were the enemies of America, aiming their dart$ against him with their lies and lack of support for a fighter for the good of America.

This entire situation with the GOP candidates/Romney/”Conservatives” on Free Republic has marked a milestone in my life. I now consider myself an elitist.

Why? Because when so many self proclaimed ‘conservatives’ will put everything they claim to believe in on the back burner and abandon the concept of right and wrong entirely in the name of ousting Obama (like voting for/supporting a man who is by cash, word and deed pro-abortion), there is no longer a point in trying.

America cannot be saved because the majority of Americans, and most tellingly, self proclaimed ‘conservatives right here on Free Republic, no longer believe in the principles and values the country once represented. Support for Romney shows that. If you vote for a person, you are voting to give him the power to act on his beliefs, whatever they are. Period. People can make all the excuses they want. That’s all they are. And people who deny reality are fools.

I, and others here are not. We retain both the ability to tell right from wrong and the desire to uphold the principles and values that being a Conservative American once stood for. That makes me better than a person who will throw it to the wind for a fantasy.

I stated on prior threads that any of these so called conservatives, including the ‘powers’ of the Republican party, who support mitt are demonstrably going against the very political platform they claim to believe in. So be it. Let them excuse and self congratulate. Let them chant slogans and look down their noses at those of us not choosing to follow their lead into the septic tank. I’ll sleep well knowing my vote will be a vote for what America once was. Theirs will be a vote in support of a liberal, no matter how they spin it. Because they either lack the intelligence or the personal integrity to do otherwise.

The facts of Mitt Romney are out there for all to see. We here on FR know more than most what he is. That any of us would vote for that, well... that’s why I/we are better.

+1

Newt stayed in to long. Had he got out Rick Santorum might have been able to beat Mitt.

But this is the establishment we are dealing with. They can and will destroy anyone just like the left does.

with Newt gone it’s Mitt by default. The media can now unload on Mitt and take it from a 50/50 race to a 40/60 race in Obama’s favor.
