Presidential Proclamation -- Loyalty Day, 2012

LOYALTY DAY, 2012

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

More than two centuries ago, our Founders laid out a charter that assured the rule of law and the rights of man. Through times of tranquility and the throes of change, the Constitution has always guided our course toward fulfilling that most noble promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve the chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. America has carried on not only for the skill or vision of history's celebrated figures, but also for the generations who have remained faithful to the ideals of our forebears and true to our founding documents. On Loyalty Day, we reflect on that proud heritage and press on in the long journey toward prosperity for all.

In the years since our Constitution was penned and ratified, Americans have moved our Nation forward by embracing a commitment to each other, to the fundamental principles that unite us, and to the future we share. We weathered the storms of civil war and segregation, of conflicts that spanned continents. We overcame threats from within and without -- from the specter of fascism abroad to the bitter injustice of disenfranchisement at home. We upheld the spirit of service at the core of our democracy, and we widened the circle of opportunity not just for a privileged few, but for the ambitious many. Time and again, men and women achieved what seemed impossible by joining imagination to common purpose and necessity to courage. That legacy still burns brightly, and the ideals it embodies remain a light to all the world.

Countless Americans demonstrate that same dedication to country today. It endures in the hearts of all who put their lives on the line to defend the land they love, just as it moves millions to improve their communities through volunteerism and civic participation. Their actions help ensure prosperity for this generation and those yet to come, and they honor the immutable truths enshrined in our Nation's founding texts. On Loyalty Day, we rededicate ourselves to the common good, to the cornerstones of liberty, equality, and justice, and to the unending pursuit of a more perfect Union.

In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as "Loyalty Day." On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America, our Constitution, and our founding values.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2012, as Loyalty Day. This Loyalty Day, I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, whether by displaying the flag of the United States or pledging allegiance to the Republic for which it stands.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-sixth.

BARACK OBAMA

Before you all go nuts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty_Day

The holiday was first observed in 1921[2] as “Americanization Day,”[3] and was intended to counterbalance the celebration of Labour Day on May Day (May 1), an internationally celebrated holiday for the commemoration of the Haymarket Massacre in Chicago in 1886.

Loyalty Day is celebrated with parades and ceremonies in several U.S. communities, like Batavia, Illinois, although many people in the United States remain unaware of it. Although a legal holiday, it is not a federal holiday, and is not commonly observed.

It was made an official holiday by the U.S. Congress on July 18, 1958 (Public Law 85-529).[4][5] Following the passage of this law, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1, 1959 the first official observance of Loyalty Day. [6]

With the exception of Eisenhower in 1959 and 1960, and the years 1966 thru 1974, Loyalty day has been recognized with an official proclamation every year by every president since its inception as a legal holiday in 1958

Yes, I saw that also in post #9 here. I can’t say I am a fan of supposed forced loyalty or allegiance, regardless of who started it. Like trust, loyalty and allegiance are earned, not legislated.

When I was in high school in the late 1960s, May 1 was called "Law Day," and a speaker from the local American Legion came to give a speech. The drugged-out hippies smirked in the back; they knew that May 1 was about Communist revolution, man, and this was supposed to be an antidote.

Calling May 1 Loyalty Day began in 1921 as an answer to the Communist May Day, which in turn dates from Communist labor strikes on that date in 19th-century Paris—you know, when the weather gets so nice, you don't want to work. This was designed to inaugurate May 1 as a feast of the atheist religion to commemorate the hatred of God, hard work, and bathing in Catholic Europe. This date for 1,000 or so years has been a feast when statues of the Virgin Mary are honored by beautiful young girls with a procession and "May Crowning."

The American Federation of Labor, which turned away from international Communism in the late 19th century, in 1928 proposed another solution: calling May 1st "Child Health Day." The Communists were bitter in their denunciation.

Proposing a counter-example to the self-seeking, feather-bedding, and violence of the post-war labor movement on both sides of the Atlantic that continues to this day, Pope Pius XII in 1955 declared May 1 the feast of a hard-working guy who didn't belong to a union and didn't break many windows that we know of—the foster-father of God Himself, "St. Joseph the Workman."

Ora pro nobis.

I did see one blogger/columnist who, for the past several years, has declared May 1 as Victims of Communism Day. I liked it so much I posted it to my Facebook page.

Correct.

In the 60s the radical leftists ensured that Loyalty Day was removed and replaced by “Law Day.”

May 1

The U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars designated the first day of May as Loyalty Day in 1947. The intention was to direct attention away from the Communist Party in the United States, which was using U.S. May Day rallies to promote its doctrines and sign up new members. The idea caught on, and soon Loyalty Day was being celebrated throughout the country with parades, school programs, patriotic exercises, and speeches on the importance of showing loyalty to the United States. In Delaware, for example, Loyalty Day was marked by a special ceremony at Cooch’s Bridge, where the Stars and Stripes were first displayed in battle. And in New York City, the Loyalty Day parade routinely attracted tens of thousands of participants.

Dissent over American intervention in Vietnam eventually eroded the popularity of Loyalty Day, and in 1968 only a few thousand marchers turned out for the traditional parades in Manhattan and Brooklyn, while 87,000 people participated in the Vietnam peace march in Central Park. Loyalty Day was later replaced by Law Day.

G.W. Bush was slammed and criticized big time by the media, Democrats and leftists in 2007 when he did the same thing by just following the public law.

Lost in the shuffle of losing American troops at a record clip in Iraq and George W. Bush itching to veto the bill that would bring our military men and women home, was the fact that King George has formally declared today as “Loyalty Day” in America.
