DEA apologizes to student who says he drank his urine to survive

The Drug Enforcement Administration has apologized to a San Diego college student who said he drank his own urine to survive after being left in a holding cell for five days without food, water or access to a toilet.

The man, identified by news outlets as 23-year-old UC San Diego engineering student Daniel Chong, was “accidentally” left in the holding cell after he and eight other people were detained for questioning following an April 21 raid in which agents found guns, ammunition and an array of drugs, including 18,000 ecstasy pills, the DEA said.

“I am deeply troubled by the incident that occurred here last week,” William R. Sherman, acting special agent in charge of DEA's San Diego Division, said in a statement Wednesday.

“I extend my deepest apologies [to] the young man and want to express that this event is not indicative of the high standards that I hold my employees to,” Sherman said, adding he has ordered “an extensive review” of DEA policies and procedures.

Identified by the DEA only as “the individual in question,” Chong and the others were swept up during a raid of a suspected ecstasy distribution operation and taken to DEA area headquarters, the agency said.

All of the suspects were fingerprinted, photographed and interviewed individually, as agents moved them among the five cells at the DEA post.

After processing, seven of the nine were taken to a county detention facility, one was released and Chong was “accidentally left in one of the cells,” the DEA said, without elaborating.

I got an old bill recently. The color is much darker and the paper feels different. I happened to recognize it as a silver certificate and kept it.

HAHAHA! When austerity hits and drug warriors are forced to find honest work, this guy could make it on Comedy Central!

It’s criminal to lock someone up and deny them their basic rights of food water and a bathroom....everyone of these JBT should be charged with attempted murder ....

There is NO plausible excuse for forgetting you locked someone up and leave them there for five days.....without once checking on him...

People go to jail for treating their dog that way....

Think he’ll be involved in an Ecstasy distribution ring anymore?

My guess is 'NO'.

Do you think the police officers responsible will lose their jobs or be prosecuted?

Do you think they should?

The purpose of urination is elimination of waste salts —urine is salty. Drinking urine would be to drink salt. Each pee iteration would yield saltier urine so after 5 days that strategy might actually speed death.

It’s still a super shocking story, but FIVE days with NO water...?

I’m pretty sure he should be dead.

He’s going to be rich. This is open and shut.

I don’t care what the reason, leaving a man in a cell to die is unacceptable. You can sentence him to death, but this?

He earned every penny.

Yeah, well folks, be prepared for a lot more of this when they start indefinitely detaining “suspected” American terrorists without charges per Obama’s [unconstitutional] executive order.

Although, I suspect by the time things get that bad, they will be keeping the news of it happening from even getting out.

This is the kind if sh*t that has been going on in Central and South America for decades. Went on in USSR and Eastern Europe. Why should Americans be special? Obama’s goal is for us to suffer the same indignities so we can all be equal.

Seriously, this will happen again to “right wing” political dissidents. Just a matter of time.

Years ago we got a bill as change in Williamsburg, and it looked strange. We were afraid to spend it in case it was phony, so we called the SS and were told to send it to them. If it were legal, they would return it. We did and a few weeks later it came back in the mail with a letter telling us to take it to the bank to cull. We kept it and the letter. :)

Does pull badges mean they can’t just go to the next town or the agency across the street?

Still doesn’t sound like pain commiserate with what is inflicted on society by Law Enforcement.

I don’t support legalizing all drugs, but what language in the Constitution authorizes the federal government to prosecute individuals for drug use?

Isn’t drug use a matter reserved to the states?

The officers should face attempted murder charges. They should be PERSONALLY sued for their pensions and forced into personal bankruptcy. That includes everyone working in the detention center or managing the center. It is time to pull the real world onto the heads of these clowns. My guess you only have to do it once and the whole judicial system discovers much needed humility.

I wish agent Sherman was saying that while wearing an orange jump suit, awaiting his turn in personal bankruptcy court.

Commerce Clause is used used to regulate everything you buy or don’t buy, everything you do or don’t do. It forms the basis for a vast array of environmental regulations, drug regulations, food regulations etc. They even regulate the carbon dioxide you breathe or don’t breathe with the ever present and all powerful Commerce Clause.

If we had a Republican President, the headline of the NYT would read, President (******)’s DEA nearly kills an innocent man.

No mention of Pres___ent Obama in ths story.
What a surprise.
