Sitting on her grandmother's couch nine days after a pit bull attacked her on the street and bit her more than 100 times, 8-year-old Lyric Jones of Covington breathed deeply and hung her head. She recalled how fearful she was that the dog would kill her.
The animal might have done that, had the child not shielded her throat and face with crossed forearms.
"I've never been that scared," said Lyric quietly, her broken left arm in a purple cast and her torn-up right arm covered in a white bandage. "I thought I was going to die."
But then people who saw the pit bull charge Lyric grabbed a metal pole and fatally beat the animal, freeing the girl, the Covington Police Department says. Lyric went to the hospital and was recovering in the care of her family Thursday while officers announced that they needed the public's help finding the dog's owner.

wonder how many of those pits will end up attacking someone.
None, because they have good owners. By the way, from 1900 thru 1980 how many pitbull attacks were there on people?

Welcome to FR! (I’ve wanted to say that since I signed-up on 3/2)
"...summons was issued to McKaskill because her child was walking the animal that bit Lyric Jones"
I often see children walking dogs they would be unable to control if the dog had a notion to break free.
Absent photos or the opinion of a St. Tammany Parish's Animal Services officer,
I will maintain doubt that the dog was a "pitbull".
Too many misidentifications by people and the media.
Pitt bull or poodle I could not care less. I just like the idea that someone acted immediately by grabbing the nearest weapon at hand, in this case a metal pole, and proceeded to beat the animal until it it let go of the girl. The dog dying as a result was a good bonus.
Yeah that’s good.
Better is avoiding the problem in the first place
by not allowing someone unable to control the dog to walk it.
I won’t knock any specific breeds, but people who raise dogs to be vicious should be held liable just like people who misuse guns. Long prison sentences would go a long way to discouraging this crap
I like it. If you see a dog attacking a little girl you grab a pole and beat the dog to death with it. Forget 911.
That would be my reaction. I love dogs, but I’d kill my own dog in that situation
Hmmm, a pit bull attack. Guess it could have been a Golden Retriever.
